The BOXSCORE thread [part 1]

Her attendance totals are down, there's no denying that but she's still doing fine business all things considered. Let's face it, the odds have always always always been against her. Even when she was doing Blond Ambition Tour and don't you all motherfuckers forget. Next tour will be even bigger.

I don't agree with her next tour will be even bigger.

I think her touring career will naturally slow down, that's not me saying she's going into semi-retirement but I don't think she will be touring mammoth shows like MDNA was anymore because she is getting older....

RH tour is a glimpse of what we will see in the future.

Attendance totals and average gross per date are down for U2 as well. $7m VS the current $2m. So what now? Perspective is of the essence

attendance is down yet she is selling out every tour date ARENA show. She's doing great.

I don't want to be negative but, I was at the Vancouver show and know for a fact that it was not 100% sold out. I was able to exchangey tickets from a section on the side of the stage to a section in the middle by the cross that was first being sold as VIP. There where still a lot of tickets around me when I looked at the ticketmaster map. The girls next to me where upgraded for free from the venue the day of the show. I was wondering how some shows are reported as sold out when they are not. Not that it really matters but with the new numbers being released I'm just curious. Obviously single tickets shouldn't count against artist as most of the time there are single seats available in every venue.

If you look at earlier pages of this thread (if I recall correctly) there's a helpful post that explains what denotes a sellout for each venue. There is a pre-agreed upon number of tickets that need to be sold at each arena to equal a "sell out" by the management. If that number is reached, it is reported as sold out.

Like what was said. Madonna has been touring like crazy for almost 15 years.

Obviously at some point demand is going to be down considering its an expensive show for many to see. For most people seeing Madonna is a once in a lifetime opportunity. They aren't blessed the way us loons are to have ways to see her every time she hits the road.

I also think this tour gives us a good preview of what a future scaled back tour in terms of production could look like from Madonna and I am thrilled at the idea of this happening one day whether its her next tour, or a tour a decade from now since some of her best moments from this tour are the scaled back moments when its just her and her guitar singing and connecting with the audience and having banter with audience members.

It's probably a good time to remind people about the concept of technical sell outs. Basically, before a single ticket goes on sale, the promoters (in conjunction with artist management) need to set in stone a figure that will be used for accounting purposes as the "sold out" figure. The figure is determined based on a huge range of factors (mostly financial, in that obviously, they need to sell a certain number of tickets to cover ALL costs, including Madonna's guaranteed minimum performance fee etc.). It also takes into account factors such as anticipated demand, past performance in that particular market etc. Anything sold above that is reported in the total grosses.

An example - MSG holds around 15 800 people in a regular end stage configuration (without catwalks etc.). For DWT, that was the sell out figure. For RIT, the sell out figure was around 1000 lower per show. For Confessions, it was around 15 300, for S&S it was around the same and for MDNA, it was around 12 400. This might have been because the triangle wiped out a heap of seats (highly likely), but the sell out figure might also have been reduced due to the fact that she had already performed two sold out stadium tours in New York prior to the arena shows (i.e. demand wouldn't have been as high).

If Live Nation/Guy Oseary feel that Madonna could sell 20 000 tickets in Florence, then as long as all of the figures add up, they can record 20 000 as their "sold out" figure. If she doesn't manage to sell 20 000 tickets, then the show will officially be listed as a non sell out. If she matches or exceeds 20 000 tickets sold, then it's officially a sell out (even if she managed to sell 35 000 tickets in the same venue on a previous tour and that concert was listed as sold out - all that means is that back then, Live Nation and Guy felt that they could sell 35 000 tickets, and they were right, but this time around, they don't think they can move as many tickets for whatever reason). Rome's Olympic Stadium, for example, has vastly different attendance figures for Confessions, S & S and MDNA, and all three performances were officially sold out (and the venues looked packed every time).

Every tour, people complain very loudly about the "ridiculously low" sold out figures and claim that they're false, misleading etc. etc., since she "sold more tickets at the same venue last time and that was listed as sold out!" While there are certainly situations where it's impossible to buy a ticket on the night of the show, for most shows (even ones listed as "sold out"), you can still grab a ticket on the night (people were buying tickets for the MSG Confessions shows on the night and they'd been listed as "sold out" for weeks beforehand). Ultimately, the industry practice is to stick with the pre-determined sell out figures and all subsequent reports are based on those figures. It's a very safe bet that all six shows so far will be reported as sell outs.

Let the fun begin! :)

THANK YOU CARTA!

Canadian dollar is in the gutter... the most expensive ticket was 350 CAD which is 260 US

Oh yikes. I didn't realize.

Are we still freaking out over these "low" boxscores? Cuz we'll all be gloating when the Europe/Asia/Australia boxscores are posted so whatever

The EURO dates will see lower revenues as well although ticket prices were just as expensive or even more expensive than the MDNA ones. It all has to do with the exchange rate dollar/euro. I think the Euro was around 1.40 with MDNA now it's around 1.10. Of course the revenue in dollars will be lower and it will look like a failure. If numbers were published in Euros for those dates people would realize that nothing has changed. The same could be said for the Canadian dates.

I wouldn't get your hopes too high with Aussie box office scores. Our dollar is shit compared to US. She will earn only 2/3 for every US dollar.

Thank you for pointing that out Raider

The same thing can be said for attendance figures

Some posters kept saying MDNA Nice wasn't sold out like S&S Nice, the stadium venue was the same

Simply because the reported figures were lower

Never mind people who had actually been at that show confirmed that it was a packed Charles Ehrman stadium

Then one day about a year later Jamesy posted a clip of the MDNA Nice show and they finally shut up about it

Again, some need to read Carta's posts more rather than posting inaccurate information

So the take away from all of this is that she is going to gross a lot less on many dates because certain economies are shit right now?

Is that how its working out?

So the take away from all of this is that she is going to gross a lot less on many dates because certain economies are shit right now?

Is that how its working out?

It's basically a combination of several factors:

Oversaturation of markets for years (same for U2, I am surprised nobody has noticed that). They currently share the same averag gross per date. It's not a stadium tour or even half a stadium tour (same for U2). If €100 equalled $140 back in 2012 and now it corresponds to $110 it's obviously going to have an impact on the overall gross figures as far as continental Europe is concerned

As for attendance figures, Carta's explanation is the rule. Don't compare attendance numbers from tour to tour, that reported attendance figure is simply a figure they were expecting to reach before even one single ticket went on sale. It's not necessarily corresponding to the number of people in the venue, in fact most of the time it's lower.

And they do that because that cautiousness ensures the show can be reported as a sold out because they have met the expected turnout figure, just in case it isn't a packed house if you know what I mean. So they know based on the stage size and the venue that they could sell 14K tickets, they say they expect to sell 11k and when they get to that 11K it can be automatically considered a sold out even if in reality 14K people were there.

When you look at all crowd shots from Canada and the US and now Germany it is really difficult to say those venues weren't packed.
