The way I see it, Madonna is mine. She inspires me, she gives me joy and energy

I think it's a very interesting topic, and the fact that everyone has an opinion about her makes her one of the most important public figures of our times.

I think there are several reasons why she is hated by a loud minority.

1. She doesn't show her weaknesses. People (I.e. The Press) hate those who appear too strong, there is an envy/jealousy/insecurity that many people feel when they see how strong and driving she is. They want to see a chink in the armour and she won't play ball. If only the fools new that her vulnerability was in her music if you look carefully

2. She is ever present in the Press. No other artist has lasted this long so continuously in the public eye and it exhausts some people (certain sections of the public)

3. She has an opinion without having a conventional education. Some people (e.g. Guardian readers) feel that mere pop singers have no right to an opinion especially female ones who show their tits a lot

4. Certain women. Mostly women who feel that she raises the bar too high for them, so they denigrate her to make themselves feel better

5. People who want to appear cool. Because Madonna still makes big tune pop music/chart music rather than disappearing into alt indie obscurity, this does not pass as cool in peer group conversations. You therefore have to say you hate her to appear cool. Some bitchy gays even do this.

6. Religious groups/conservative types. Obvious reasons.

There are many more reasons, but these I think are the biggies

very good!

i do agree that she irritates a lot of stagnant types of personalities.

I also see a lot of hatred by younger people online, saying she just used gays, never did anything for them, turned her backs on them for Kaballah/Guy Ritchie, etc. Anyone else?

Oh God, I cannot stand when people say she used the gay community. Usually I hear it from fans of younger artists, which just goes to show how uneducated some people are. Madonna stood up for gay rights at a time when it was still extremely taboo and in many cases dangerous to do so.

Back in 2012 there was an article on the Huffington Post that summed it up perfectly:

Back in the 1980s, when Madonna burst on the scene, the U.S. was in a scary place on the issue of homosexuality. For a generation of gay men, Madonna was our antidote. As our friends died around us during the callous Reagan era, as conservatives like William F. Buckley Jr. called for putting tattoos on people with AIDS, as Senator Jesse Helms was writing laws against us, Madonna was pushing back culturally. She struck at the Catholic church. She flaunted sexuality. She crashed through stereotypes about gender. She did in those very oppressive years what Lady Gaga does for gays more overtly in this much more gay-accepting time.

Not to dwell on this or preach to the choir, but I refuse to allow people to discredit Madonna's impact on the gay community. Now being pro-LGBT is just the normal thing for popstars to do, thanks to people like Madonna. Honestly sometimes I wish we could just sit down everyone in this generation and give them a lesson in our cultural history so they'd stop spouting their ignorant remarks. It's so frustrating having to educate them when they say things like that.

Because she doesn't do what is 'expected' of a woman her age. Like someone earlier mentioned, the same people criticizing her now will try to 'act young' when they get older but they will look pathetic doing it. They criticize her now but in a few years, it will be acceptable for a woman in her 50s and beyond to be herself. I don't understand this mindset where 'cougars' are almost put on a pedestal but Madonna is shat on. WTF. Look at who they glorify over the age of 40: people with problems, i.e. the Housewives for one example.

Madonna has discipline. She is always trying something new. This keeps her youthful. She is unique and that is why the media and brain dead idiots hate her.

Any nastiness and vitriol that I see, I see it as a reflection on the speaker.

In other words brainless women because that's what they want them to be and if they are hysterical with a booze problem and drugs they become their goddesses. It's exactly the same thing with that guy Charlie something and his videos : passive-agressive hatred for women.

The same people who fantasize Madonna being a modern day Joan Crawford to Lola / Christina...People worship people who make them feel good about themself : trashy celebrities, brainless and vegetables. They love, love, love Britney because they have contempt for her, she's an underdog but when she was at the top they put ehr down for being a manufactured airhead.

It all comes down to the lyrics of What it feels like for a girl.

For a female in this world, a lot of things can be summarized by the lyrics of What it feels like for a girl. It's such a brilliant, insightful song. "When you open up your mouth to speak, could you be a little weak" encapsulates it in one line really.

The weird thing is, it seems in the past M knew when to pull back a little bit, from the controversy, the persona, etc etc, because if you lose your audience you're just preaching to the choir. Pull back a bit, reel them in again with music that will go over well and then make your next statement. She seemed to have a very good sense of that. Apart from the music quality, isn't that one of the reasons the controversies over the years didn't kill her career. For example, after Erotica/Sex or American Life. Who knows, though, maybe it was her management or label at the time that pushed her enough that she relented in the past. Maybe the current management and label don't have the same clout or persuasive power with her, or maybe they don't have the same insight as the previous one. I don't know it's very confusing what's going on, reading the airplay and album review threads, and then reading this one. It just seems like there some concerted effort going on to discredit her and she / her team are not playing it as shrewdly as before.

Because she doesn't give a shit. Because she broke convention and continued to do so and never let the haters get to her. She never had a public meltdown, or addiction, and for one of the most talked about people there is still an air of mystery about her personal life

And she's never been a victim

Oh and she's a woman

It was how she rubs people the wrong way that first made me a fan. I remember when I was a kid back in the early 00's watching people on TV and in my school saying how awful her arms are, while most of them were FLOPney and FLOPtina fans and I couldn't care less about the little sluts and 15 years later, here we are. :lmao:

I totally agree with everything you guys have said, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The fact that Madonna isn't universally loved proves that she is still a polarising cultural figure. Still a force to be reckoned with. I mean how many other icons past 40 (male or female) get the kind of attention that Madonna gets? That's the role of all great artists in society,to be provocative, to push the envelope and to make people think, and Madonna does this better than anybody, and as a result she is heavily critisised in the media. But that's ok because love or hate her,she isn't going anywhere, and I think that's what pisses people off the most, her resilience. She always comes out on top. No matter what people say or do,she always has them last laugh.

I for one am grateful that Madonna has never conformed to what society expects from her, that she still rebels against convention. I say bring on the criticism, because it means she's doing something right. If you sit at the riverside long enough, you will eventually see the bodies of your enemies floating by,and we all know that the very same critics who are slamming Madonna now, will be the same people, who when she dies, will be the ones singing her praises.

Her arms are hot. I hate girly girls. :lmao: I'm glad she doesn't act like that and is fit as fuck.

That is exactly it, Roland Barthes.

Because they cannot put her in a box.

Because she cannot be contained or controlled.

Because bitter and angry journalists like that idiot over at the Independent will never have the same influence that she has.

Because it is a sick "sport".

I've been reading old magazine interviews again lately and just came across this, from the 1996 Spin interview, which I'll just leave here:

"I am a woman people have a hard time feeling sorry for. I think that's the key -- you're allowed to be bad if people can find something in you that they can pity."

 She's so smart, this is why she has been around for so long in this industry and has been so successful. She always knew her criticisms had little to do with her - that they stem from larger social problems like sexism, now ageism, etc. That's why she had the strength to turn around and say "I'm not apologizing, you're the one with the problem" and make people confront their own prejudices, rather than becoming a victim. I love her so much.

People have always loved to hate her and - sadly - they will continue to do so, using whatever argument (old, desperate, irrelevant, untalented, calculated, stupid ... you name it)

What I did is simply tune out. This forum is pretty much my resource for Madonna news, I don't use FB, I don't tweet I don't interact with crazy fanatics in other forums. Simply don't engage with them because it's stupid - what for? you won't change everybody's mind and only end up feeling angry and getting bitter. I'm busy and challenged enough in my job, I don't need any extra drama.

The way I see it, Madonna is mine. She inspires me, she gives me joy and energy and I don't need to play missionary to other people. I cherish her and that's all I want.

So, enjoy her and don't pay any attention to what other people think or comment - it's a waste of energy.

Hyper, This post is brilliant in so many ways. For years on end, the constant hate Madonna received from the press - which then trickled down to a lot of the General Public due to them believing everything they read - always annoyed and saddened me. Now, I only talk Madonna on this forum with people I know that like her. Made the stupid mistake of reading comments on a Daily Fail article the other day and was amazed at how yet again, I felt so angry at the vile, sexist, ageist and vicious comments. Other music forums and other Madonna forums don't interest me at all either because why spend time listening to hateful people that don't even like Madonna or people that pretend to like her but spend most of their time complaining about her. I wish the hate would go away but as Madonna fans, we just have to tune out from it and enjoy her ourselves.

Because she represents evetything that the haters want to be. And since they can't be like her (successful, happy, brave, beautiful, and genuine), they have to hate her!

The hate toward Madonna was there from day one. People are just pissed off that she is still around and proved them wrong. :stir:

We should be glad Madonna has haters. Had she ever been universally praised, she wouldn't have stayed popular for nearly as long.

She's been able to surf right on the line of top dog / underdog, and that's been one of her greatest talents. She's considered the pop girl to beat, yet they count her out EVERY time she releases something.

Madonna Falls Into the Gap

Her new ad's a dud

The much anticipated Madonna ad is a total dud. In it, she dances about on a city-street movie set, lip-syncing a song that mixes the beats of "Into the Groove" with lyrics from the more recent single "Hollywood." Then Missy Elliott pops up and does a short rap on the subject of Gap jeans, and the two improbably prance about like good, Gap-shopping friends. Madonna sings the closing line, "Get into the groove, got to show ya some moves, best to take it from me. …" Totally limp.

As a failure, the ad is interesting because Madonna has always been praised as much for her ability to market herself as for her actual talent as a singer and performer. Long before the "cool hunter" idea entered mainstream marketing discourse, she was renowned for spotting new trends and exploiting them for her own benefit. But in the wake of yet another box office tanking (what was that last movie called?) and disappointing album sales, she can't even get an actual commercial right. Maybe Madonna really is over...

Nailed it.

Sometimes it feels like there is a conscious campaign to put her down. Has any singer ever got the same treatment from peers tearing her apart, or celebrities being vocal about their dislike for an artist ? When they do they have people telling them theya re awful but not when it's Madonna. That's what makes her a REAL artist because she's not universally liked, she rubs people the wrong way, pushes them out of their comfort zone and years later they discover taht what she was preaching then is what they are preaching now. It's not easy being ahead all the time.

Perfectly put. On facebook I've recently deleted some insignificant acquaintances (bitter frumpy housewives from high school and Gaga stanning rubbish gheys) who were constantly trashing Madonna. No loss! It drives them mad to see still Madonna thriving while they rot with bitterness, cellulite, sexual frustration!

So true. As a female who grew up admiring Madonna for not only her music but everything she stood for, seeing women of all ages downplaying her success and influence is infuriating. I don't expect them to all love her but seeing them praise up the likes of other female singers - who Madonna smashed the door open for - while putting Madonna down, is just wrong on every level.

 Just did the same today to a Gaga loving guy who has now decided to yet again jump on her bandwagon - due to her singing Sound of Music songs - while putting Madonna down. What is wrong with these people and why are they so fickle and weak Why do they have to put Madonna down when praising other over-rated singers is beyond me.

why not interact with them? it makes no sense anyway. how does gaga having a good voice somehow make madonna seem bad? how does it make other artists seem bad, who are not known for their best vocals? why always pick on madonna? it makes no sense whatsoever. is bob dylan suddenly bad? or even taylor swift? rihanna? fuck it, maybe even david bowie? after all they can't sing the sound of music in an "opera voice", so that must mean they're weak.

it's just idiotic and it seems so damn easy to point this out as well. before "flushing" maybe wake them up a bit and call out their idiocy. they have nothing to stand on. gaga having a good voice doesn't make her actual music any better.

I never saw this type of hate by any people other than hardcore fanatic fans of other artists...

But considering Madonna's legacy, and everything, I think she does not manage her image well...

Being a bitch, or making two marketing wonders call herself bitch are not my fav things about her...

I think that Madonna collaborates with Miley, Nicki Minaj to attract attention of younger generations, but I feel that she should collaborate with more classy, and more talented acts...

I would like to see Gaga and Madonna together, but considering it is nearly impossible, she can collaborate with

For example: Beyoncé, Rihanna, Florence+The Machine, Sia, Lorde...

Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus are very poor choices to keep by her side....
