Just for the record One Direction have repeatedly been compared to The Beatles in terms of popularity and "fan hysteria."

True. But as you said, most of the time I see those comparisons, it's about popularity/fans.... not about the music, vocals, artistry, etc.

But with Madonna, it does get compared to the vocals and songs...and I still see far less of that going towards the men.

True but then we have a music legend like Lionel Ritchie speaking the truth, and saying what I'm sure the majority in that age bracket think.

A lot of people love Madonna and talk highly of her imo. I honestly believe if you polled 100 people on the street you'd get more positive comments than negative.

People will she's "old" or that she "can't sing" but what else can they say? She's a legend and no one can deny it.

I think Madonna gets a lot of respect from people though as well. It's just these haters that scream the loudest. And strangely enough alot of the time they are female.

I'm not sure about it. Maybe you're right but i always felt that very little people are actually defending her outside of us. Basically all the others music legends are universally acclaimed all the time, Madonna is the only one whose talent, impact and legacy is constantly questioned. Take Bonnie Tyler, Dolly Parton, Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin,... and so many others female legends. Do anyone ever question their statut and talent? No, never, it only happen with Madonna.

As i said: look how quickly people were talking about Gaga being "the new and better Madonna" as soon as Just Dance became a hit. It's scary to see how easily people wanted to dismiss Madonna's career for some newcomer. I think it's really at that moment that i realised how much she wasn't really respected.

Madonna gets a lot of respect. It's just us as fans focus on the negative things due to that being highlighted all the time. Everyone knows her as the Queen of Pop, everyone knows she's a superstar. She has a lot of casual fans. Not just die hard ones like us.

Who's Bonnie Taylor?

Total Eclipse Of The Heart.......the 80's power ballad version.

She also had a big late 70's hit called Its A Heartache. I have to say though, Ive never heard her referred to as a legend......but as we learned in the "icon" thread a couple weeks back, I guess that can be subjective....lol.

 There's a fine line on this forum between "subjective" and people being "ill informed."

I always thought she was considered as a legend for some reason. A lot of people around me saw her as one.
