MDNA Leftovers

William Orbit just posted demos and versions of Mysore Smile on his soundcloud, which as Whoopie points out in the Some Girls remix thread, is an early version of Cyberraga.

It's got me thinking - every album has several unreleased tracks and demos that we've heard of at the very least. Do we know of any from MDNA?

As far as I'm aware there is the demo of GMAYL, without Minaj and MIA, Bang Bang Boom and, possibly the orchestral version of Masterpiece (although the authenticity of that has been called into question).

Has there even been mention of any other tracks recorded that didn't make it onto the album? I love MDNA, but it is hardly succinct or scant and I wouldn't be surprised if they just chucked everything at the wall as far as its content goes.

Martin mentioned 1 leftover track produced by him that wouldn't see the light of day. I don't remember what interview he said this in though.

Also, M played 3 songs outside her apartment window (lol) back in 2011. One was GMAYL, another GGW, and the other was an unrecognizable song.

Apart from "Kids", I only know of demos of songs that are on the album.

There's a demo of "Love Spent" by Priscilla Renea, as well as an early instrumental demo. I think Madonna might have recorded a demo, too.

The leaked demo and the final version of GMAYL allegedly combines parts from three different vocal takes, none of which have leaked.

Oh, and Abel Korzeniowski confirmed that a recording of "Masterpiece" with real strings exists.

Apart from those, I have only come across the original demos of "Girl Gone Wild" (sung by Rosette Sharm) and "Some Girls" (sung by Bebe Rexha).

I remember reading somewhere that the album would open with a ballad called "Trust".Not sure if there is a real track with that title or if this was just an early rumor.

Ooh yes! That was one of the most persistent rumours, and wasn't she supposed to have recorded with Sia?

I remember Sia tweeting about working with M and then deleting almost immediately.

Also, I love that really dramatic version of Girl Gone Wild that comes out of the window.

Hopefully we will get to hear more of those unreleased songs :)

We had a thread about this picture.

Some of those songs fit the bpms of actual songs in the album. So we believe they just had different names.

I didn't realise Some Girls was yet another bought-in song!

William Orbit and Klas Ã…hlund wrote and produced a song for Britney Spears' Femme Fatale album which was rejected by her label.

"Some Girls" is rumoured to be that song.

Madonna's version features slightly different lyrics, an breakdown section not present in the demo and additional backing vocals.

Oh, I agree ... I never really was able to "hear" the final GGW in what we heard from the window. The lyrics seemed to match, but it just seemed like a different melody or beat to me? I don't know. Probably just me being stupid. But I liked it better somehow, even in such low quality! Haha!

Sia confirmed that none of the material that she submitted to Madonna for consideration was used. She was pretty disappointed about it.

Perhaps she just didn't feel that any of it fit the sound of the album. I know there's some wide variation on MDNA -- from Gang Bang and IDGA to Falling Free and Masterpiece, and including things like Superstar and B-day Song ... but somehow I don't imagine Sia's style cohering very well in that mix. I got the feeling she was invited to submit, though. Maybe one day M will re-visit, when she's making that album Joe Henry insists he'll be ready to help her make when she's ready to make the shift.

Guest Rachelle of London

I love threads like these! So much info.

It is weird how For MDNA we never got anything out takes wise. Some of my fave songs are "rejects" from other albums

^ Probably because we got more on the deluxe version than ever before. In the past, the best we got (officially) was one extra track on the album (either through the Japanese release, or later through iTunes deluxe) ... then maybe an unreleased B-side on a single ("Supernatural" "Let Down Your Guard" "History"). The unofficial leaks seem to take some time to trickle out (though they sometimes arrive in waves/avalanches of material). The only thing left from MDNA unreleased seems to be the demos -- "Bang Bang Boom" and "GMAYL" (rap-less). And even the rap-less GMAYL we had before the album was out. Ha!

So, in the old model, we wouldn't have gotten the second disc of material: "Beautiful Killer," "I F*cked Up," "B-day Song," "Best Friend," and the acoustic "Love Spent" all together. Let's say BK would have been included on the deluxe disc (and the Japanese release) as a bonus track. Then IFU might have been a B-side on GGW. B-day Song would have leaked out on the internet eventually, and Best Friend might have been shared before the tour launched (TUTR B-side?). I don't know. They were just feeling more generous this time. Figuring they'd make a little extra on it instead of having it be traded freely by fans. (Although, if pre-ordered on Super Bowl weekend, it was like they were giving those tracks away for free. I think the price was $9.99 that weekend, yeah? Which went up to, like, $12.99 after that. And the physical copies were similarly priced, but slightly higher, I think.)

I hope the Sia rejected song wasn't Titanium!

Titanium was released in 2011 (if you can believe it!), so most likely, no.

However, I always wondered if she offered M Rihanna's Diamonds...

Not that I love the song, but it is an interesting sound and was a big hit.

All the leaks stopped after the Jorge / GMAYL incident. We never even got any of the MDNA tour studio demos unlike all the other live tours from Dwt onwards. But yes, the deluxe disc did also contain the extra tracks that probably would have not been released previously.

We got the MDNA Tour studio versions of Gang Bang, Justify My Love, Human Nature, Like a Virgin and Novody Knows Me. But most of them only as rips from the backdrop.

Only Like a Virgin was leaked in audio format, by Nation's own m.d.n.a. (who also leaked the full setlist of the tour).

And WHYYYYY that was not the official release is still a baffle to the brain. To choose the keyboard strings over an actual orchestra? It took me a while to get over the "demo" sound of Masterpiece back when it first came out for WE. It's such a beautiful song with a lackluster production.
