  1. 1. Paid Airplay For Next Single?

Sure, but I think the days of hoping for a big hit are probably over. Her best bet is still her lead single...but it has to be awesome, not half-assed.

She shouldn't release shit singles. Radio might play her songs more if they were good.

If everybody else is doing it, I don't see why she shouldn't do it. Without payola she probably never would have reached the top 10 with GMAYL (not that it matters that much, but still....).

Exactly!

And even if they don't, wasn't Hung Up a hit based on sales alone? Why can't that happen again?

Billboard has revised the weightage of sales.

With the same amount of downloads, one may get a top 10 in 2006 but not in 2013.

Best example? Mimi's #Bountiful.

if everyone else does it then i suppose. i'd hope her next lead single is good enough that it doesn't need payola though. if radio won't play her song first off no matter how good it is then payola would be acceptable just to get it out there and known and then people will at least have a chance to hear it.

It was used for GMAYL in the first week because Interscope pushed for a Clear Channel deal. Sadly, in the second week all radios stopped playing it because the audiences couldn't stand the song.

I think the idea of "payola" is extremely over-exaggerated by fans. In fact, a wealthy and successful artist like Madonna at this point in her career could afford to pay for every one of her songs to hit top ten if the whole "payola" thing was so true. Of course, some will claim, she's better than that, but then why now say it's okay to do it? Not only that, how do we know that she didn't do it long ago?

My thought... record companies tend to get behind some artsts more than others. Whatever the reason, they are willing to push them more. I'm not saying "payola" doesn't happen, but I also think radio execs tends to play a big role in what is played and supposedly they do these tests to find out which songs will be more receptive to their audiences than others. Doesn't mean it will prove to be successful for the song, but I know there have been some pretty awful songs that have been huge radio songs, while there have been other great songs out there that got the boot or never had a chance. And of course, artists who are newer who have had a few hits under their belt, tend to get free reign for awhile on radio. Radio knows there is a current audience listening to their stations for those artists.

Since streaming and YouTube plays count towards AirPlay now, I would hope there wouldn't be a need for payola on future singles. If she releases a strong lead from the next album that more than just fans want to hear, she'll be fine.

I honestly think that the plan with MDNA was to fly under the radar chart-wise and only rack up dance chart hits.

I don't think Madonna spends too much time thinking or worrying about chart positions anymore. If there's going to be any "deals" made, then it would be through Guy Oseary, and lets face it, he hasn't a clue how to manage her.

So, I voted no.

The weightage of streaming is around 10% or lesser.

Okay, but it still counts? Either way, I still would vote no.

But I would like to know why on earth she or her team refuse to utilize her website? She can actually promote or debut her products/videos

there. Aside from #SecretTeaser footage.

I kind of agree with you, but then she said in an interview that she couldn't release "Gang Bang" as a single because radio wouldn't play it (or something along those lines), right? Which kind of indicates that singles are still being selected based on radio's reaction -- which, in some ways, doesn't make any sense these days. Even if radio refused to play "Gang Bang," a killer (pun intended) video may have gotten a lot of buzz on the web and that might have been just as effective (if not more) than releasing the radio-friendly track.

I'm not trying to play coulda-shoulda-woulda here with the MDNA singles again ... I'm sure that's been done ad nauseum. I just mean, clearly with MDNA they went with what they assumed would be the radio friendly choices. Unfortunately, that's sort of backfiring in that radio isn't interested for the most part anyway. The only MDNA song that sounded like it was aimed at radio that she did NOT release was "Superstar." And that's a rather derided track on this board... So it is strange that her more engaging tracks are not chosen as singles anymore ... whereas, in yesteryear, Madonna would release the likes of "Bedtime Story" and "Human Nature" and "Oh Father" even when she probably knew they were riskier -- but she had a great video concept and wanted to realize the vision. Kinda hoping she goes for that more in the next chapter -- forget what people assume is digestible by radio audiences and release the song with which she also wants to make a visual statement. (I mean -- that probably sounds unfair. I think she still made a statement visually with GMAYL, so ... she's not surrendered completely to robotic commercialism...)

True. Gang Bang would've only worked as a video single.

Quite honestly, I'm glad she still bothers to make videos to her singles, I just never watch them. I know a lot of fans do, so it

must be frustrating when they want to watch the GGW vid and its been blocked once again by youtube.
