Madonna to present GLAAD award to Anderson Cooper

NEW YORK (AP) — Gay advocacy group GLAAD says Madonna will present CNN's Anderson Cooper with an award for openly gay media professionals.

GLAAD told The Associated Press on Saturday that the singer has been chosen to give Cooper the Vito Russo Award at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on March 16.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick says Madonna and Cooper are longtime friends who have both used their careers to support lesbian, gay and transgender people.

Cooper declined to speak publicly about his sexuality for years. But last July he gave blogger Andrew Sullivan permission to publish an email in which Cooper said he was gay and "couldn't be more happy."

Russo helped found GLAAD and wrote a book about gay people in the movies called "The Celluloid Closet."

Nice.

Makes a change from celebs thinking hanging around with Elton John, mypartnerdavidfurnish, Jake Shears and that lot make you a gay activist.

OMG I so want to buy a ticket, although I don't want to exploit the situation because I'm a Madonna fan.

I'm pleased Madonna is doing this but, y'know, given how long Anderson Cooper was in the closet for, I'm not sure how meaningful this award really is.

I believe the award is for positive media coverage of gay issues, not for what someone does or doesn't do in their personal life. If you watch his show on CNN, he has given a lot of discussion of gay issues long before he himself came out. In fact, I believe GLAAD has given awards to straight people who have played gay roles or done documentaries on gay issues. So whether he's out or not, for how long is not relevant to the award. It's for media coverage of gay issues, not how Anderson conducts his personal life.

I use to really like Anderson, but after he got his talk show, he came down a few notches into Andy Cohen level of grossness. Still, any excuse to see Madonna out and about is fine with me!

So he likes some crap tv. Get over it. He's a great example of a gay man in the media and a perfect role model. He deserves recognition for that. And who better to honor him than THE gay icon?
