Cherish Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 And there are a lot of them on this board! For all those who hate "Celebration" or anything from HARD CANDY or even COADFL before that: WHAT WAS THE LAST MADONNA SONG YOU LIKED?
Lucky guy Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 And there are a lot of them on this board! For all those who hate "Celebration" or anything from HARD CANDY or even COADFL before that: WHAT WAS THE LAST MADONNA SONG YOU LIKED? Well that's not me, because I didn't hate the whole of Hard Candy, don't hate Celebration (don't love it either, there's not much there to either like or dislike), and I LOVED Confessions. But to humour your outburst, I'd say Give It To Me was the last Madonna song I got into, because it was always on the radio when I was in Italy last year, so I developed a fondness for it.
Knocka Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Why can't a madonna "fan" also be a "critic?" You don't have to like everything the woman shits out. I liked COAD and loved Hard Candy. Celebration just doesn't do it for me....maybe it would have back in 98 though.
Voguerista Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I loved HC and Confessions! I have loved every Madonna album. As for Celebration, it's not in my top 20 Madonna songs. But, I still like it. It's not this huge flop song like some are trying to make out. Something like "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" would fit that description better. Adding: and yeah, Madona fans are some of the most negative, hateful, and brutally honest people and critics in the world. Sometimes they don't know when to stop. But, when they are cool, they are really "cool".
Guest seancannon Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 The last 'complete' album that I loved and that was so avant-guarde was Ray of Light. I liked 2 songs off of Music and I liked Miles Away from HC. But I think ROL was her last album that she really, and I mean really, put her all into it. And she had to- she just became a "Mom" and she had to prove at 40 that she could still make a come back.
Guest seancannon Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Oh wait a sec, future Lovers and GET TOGETHER are brilliant too.
Guest Coked Up Baby Boy Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I don't think there's anyone here who HATED every single thing off HC or COADF
gemini1313 Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I don't think there's anyone here who HATED every single thing off HC or COADF exaCLTY righT. i loved ALL of CONFESSIONS. i really liked some of HARD CANDY. but i ADORE Madonna overall. she is a genius.
mrsz Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I like HC and enjoy Celebration a bit, but her last great song (that matches her previous efforts) is Hung Up.
Guest Danny86 Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I don't think there's anyone here who HATED every single thing off HC or COADF Oh you'd be surprised. Fortunately none of those post on this board. But there exists a group of fans who think AL was Madonna's absolute peak, if it didn't flop, she'd be making non-commercial music now, and that she used to be a true artiste instead of someone who keeps releasing songs about having fun.
nightcutter Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I loved COADF. I'm not fond of Hard Candy. But I love Give it 2 me. It's an absolute corker of a track and I play it lots.
GregVsMatt Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I've loved almost everything in M's music career except: In This Life (yuck, it ruins Erotica) American Pie (even M hates this one) American Life (what the fuck was she thinking?)
smeowly Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 i don't get why madonna fans don't like hard candy. i love the first 6 songs so much (yes, even candy shop) and i think they're way better than celebration. i even think hard candy is slightly better than confessions (just a bit). i do not like american life though. if she released confessions right after music i think she'd have no problems getting her singles on the radio because the momentum wouldn't have been interupted by american life.
GimmeSomeMo Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 But it wasnt meant to be. After every big wave of success Madonna gets cocky and thinks she can take the audience wherever she wants (Erotica, AL). It's part of her charm.
Elysium Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 If you're a passive consumer who doesn't happen to think much then I guess you'll like everything Madonna does even if she were to defecate on a CD. I'm really liking Celebrate. The best album she's made in recent years is COADF. A good concept album and not too much filler. Hard Candy has some great tracks but songs like Incredible and Spanish Lesson are embarassingly poor by Madonna's own standards...bad enough to make me want to avoid the whole album. The American Life album is similar to Hard Candy in the way it contains some great tracks which are disrupted by boring half-assed dreary songs like Easy Ride and the American Life single. While some of us here may be critics that doesn't mean we loathe everything she does. We just have a clearer sense of what we like and dislike especially when it comes to Madonna's work.
Guest Danny86 Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Just because somebody enjoys the vast majority of Madonna's output, it won't make them a passive consumer. An artist is meant to give you a ride though his/her work and your choice if you join it or not. The actual "loony" behavior is when certain fans keep on obsessing how Madonna *should* be, what music she should do, what people she should work with, how her hair should like, who she should date etc... Same for those "standards" and "expectations" people have been constantly creating. It does not make you more objective if you decide some of her work is the "Madonna level" and compare everything to it, neither it makes you a proper critic. I don't see how's it "clearer sense of what you like and dislike" if you keep on wishing Madonna should go back to Patrick Leonard, or that she's not allowed to work with certain people. It's just a matter of taste like anyone else's. And then I didn't mention those ridiculous false assumptions about Madonna not being proud of her work or going through the motions, which is far more disturbing than liking every note Madonna has sung so far.
hyper Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I adored everything COADF but am not too fond of HC except for GI2M and MA. Celebration sounds allright but it didn't make me orgasm ...
HolidayGuy Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 True- can't imagine anyone who frequents this forum hasn't liked a single thing from the last four years.

ahafan02 Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Oh brother... I am not a fanatic..I don't love everything she does. For me her work this decade pales in comparison to her work in the 80's and 90's. There are a lot of songs from this decade I love, for example: -Music, Impressive Instant, Paradise, Die Another Day, American Life (yes I actually like this song), Hollywood (Thin White Duke mix only), Future Lovers, Forbidden Love, Jump, History, Candy Shop (yep I love this one too), Devil Wouldn't Recognize You...even Celebration "Confessions" would be the best album this decade IMO with American Life being the worst. My problem with Madonna is that this decade she stopped being a trend setter, now she's a trend follower. She has done nothing revolutionary this decade, at all. This is my problem with Celebration. Yeah it's a fun summer dance track, but one cannot deny it sounds like DJ Sammy married 90's euro dance. There isn't a single artist that I can name that I love every single song they've made. Some fan(atics) believe if you don't love every M song you are somehow "letting her down". This is a strange mentality. How can you measure her recent albums with Madonna, Like a Virgin, Like A Prayer, Erotica, ROL? COADF comes close but that's the only one. When Madonna is long gone and people look back on her career I have suspicions that this will be the decade most skip.
Guest ketchup Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I may be in the minority but I think American Life is a crown jewel in her discography

When Madonna is long gone and people look back on her career I have suspicions that this will be the decade most skip. This is exactly what I was talking about. People believe the hype and myths that Madonna's music is revolutionary and trendsetting, when for the most part, it isn't. And just because something is not groundbreaking, then it cannot be enjoyed? Did you become a fan because she was perceived as such, or because you actually liked the music? As for measuring with the old albums, is it really unbelievable that some people prefer the newer stuff? For me AL, COADF and HC easily walk over Erotica and you know there are many other fans who don't think Erotica is a "masterpiece". It's all about taste. And about people looking back on her career, why would that matter to you? For most people Madonna is just "Like A Virgin" & "Material Girl" anyway, yet for many fans she gave a lot of fantastic moments this decade, especially with her tours. Once again, to me it feels certain fans are addicted to Madonna being #1 everywhere and they want more. They are fed by what "other people" think, instead of their own enjoyment.
LSD Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 But it wasnt meant to be. After every big wave of success Madonna gets cocky and thinks she can take the audience wherever she wants (Erotica, AL). It's part of her charm. Since COADF and HC have been successes, I wonder if her next album will be a similar "artistic" endeavor. I kind of hope so.

Voguerista Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 I may be in the minority but I think American Life is a crown jewel in her discography I think so too!!! Most under-rated Madonna album ever.

Well said. I like to add... that just because some rather focus on what they appreciate rather focus on what they dislike, doesn't mean they are some "loon" who loves everything she does. It's just I don't see the point of dissecting and over-analyzing things I don't like. Not that I don't think that we shouldn't be able to share some of our dislikes, but some people do take it too far to the point that they come off so negative regarding Madonna, which questions why they are even here anymore? Honestly, I don't believe the on-line fans realize that they simply fuel those people who really dislike Madonna. I mean; if I was a person who wanted to write a scathing article about Madonna, all I have to do is walk in her fan forums and lift the general consensus of some fans who constantly pick her a part. I could easily use the line..."Even her fans think this of her!"
Guest Borderline Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 But there exists a group of fans who think AL was Madonna's absolute peak, if it didn't flop, she'd be making non-commercial music now, and that she used to be a true artiste instead of someone who keeps releasing songs about having fun. That's a really interesting point-of-view. A lot of fans gripe over the fact that she's been using mainstream producers lately and not opting to choose from the unknowns... but, perhaps it's because of the lack of success that American Life received that cause this to happen. She had been going down the more 'artiste' road that had more depth and meaning, and people turned up their noses to her last effort that was like that (AL), so she went back to just making dance music as it's obviously a safeguard. Perhaps if American Life saw more success, her career path would've been completely different now. Perhaps the same 'fans' who contributed to the poor performance of AL (who mostly are the ones who complain about her direction), inadvertently caused Madonna to just simply play it safe.
moe Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Live this, like that, But I do think Celebrate is cool! Got a nice dancy vibe!
