TOUR2008 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 http://blogs.villagevoice.com/dailymusto/a...ady_gaga_th.php Is Lady Gaga The New Madonna? By Michael Musto in Featured, Lady Gaga, MadonnaWednesday, May. 27 2009 @ 9:00AM via sbcarlile's photostream Remember when Madonna joined the Britney bandwagon, championing her greatness and even duetting with the new star to signal the fact that she might become the new Madonna, so it was best to quickly embellish her with the old Madonna? But now, it turns out that Lady Gaga is way more Madonna-like than Britney ever was. The girl is much more of a player in her own image-making and seems like the visually avant-garde chameleon type that Britney, who simply synchs and swivels as she's told, is not overly interested in being. And naturally, Madonna has already put her stamp of approval on Gaga, going to her concert with the boy toy and the daughter, whose ipod she clearly raided to find out about this new phenomenon of artsy commercialism. Madonna's no dummy--and if Gaga turns out to be just a two-hit wonder, Madge will simply move on to the next emerging diva. But in the meantime, I give it a matter of minutes until we hear about a Madonna/Gaga duet. I'm not bluffin' with my muffin!
scrapple Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 of course she's not. there's only one madonna and the rest are just cheap knockoff wannabees. end of story!
paradise Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 what lazy journalism! i can't believe people get paid for writing such half arsed articles
moe Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Well for starters Madonna was and is beautifull, sexy! Gaga is an eyesore to look at and no sex appeal what so ever!
Elysium Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 In all fairness Gaga does has a good live voice compared to Madonna which counts a lot more than cosmetic appeal for some people. Plus she can project her voice for an audience. Is she the new queen of pop...only time will tell.

Plus she can project her voice for an audience. Is she the new queen of pop...only time will tell. She could only be princess. Remember that. There's only one Queen and ever will be! As for GaGa. I guess she's the closest to Madonna-ish we've got in the last decade probably. New Madonna? Nah. But the closest to it.
HolidayGuy Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 GaGa does have some potential to be the "next big thing" beyond one album. The couple perofrmances I've seen had some shades of Madonna to them, but, yes, she'd have to compete with the others for title of Princess of Pop. No one has done or can do what Madonna has, but I still like Pink the best among the Madonna followers/"wanna-bes," as far as the complete package. But, we'll see about GaGa.
Chuck82 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 The thing is.. for someone to big bigger than Madonna or as big (it will never happen btw) they wouldn't even need to say oh she is the next Madonna. Like when Madonna busted on the scene she was not "the next" anyone she was just MADONNA. Does that make any sense?

acko Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I don't think it's possible 4 people 2 b reached in that way anymore..regardless of any comparison.. I don't c a generation 2 b captured like that..by anyone. The 80's were the last golden era 4 the true idol. or am i just getting old?

acko Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 could be a little of both. i dont know how twitter tweets are being reached today but where theres a teenager, theres an idol. absolutely..but that's the whole 'I'm a teen this is my idol' thing..like Madonna had her wannabe Virgin era.. but it's 2 move beyond that & still b huge & [Holidayguy]culturally enriching[/Holidayguy]
Guest Pud Whacker Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 absolutely..but that's the whole 'I'm a teen this is my idol' thing..like Madonna had her wannabe Virgin era.. but it's 2 move beyond that & still b huge & [Holidayguy]culturally enriching[/Holidayguy] well totally. after gloria steinem, punk and MTV, she went out of her boundaries and became part of the fabric of society, internationally. she represented the new woman and of course shrugged it off - "im not a feminist, im a humanist" of course, its too early to tell if joanne can have that sort of impact in the fleeting twitter twees of octopussy and jon and kate journalism...
Guest nothingfails0603 Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I am just curious, is the hatred for Gaga here because you truly dislike the music, or because you guys take great offense to the media trying to liken her to Madonna? I seriously don't see how a Madonna fan could *hate* something like Just Dance (which IMO sounds more like "old school Madonna" than the HC material everyone raves about how much it sounds like vintage M). But I do agree it's way too soon for the media to bestow "the new Madonna" on her after one album and maybe three hit singles. You have to earn that type of status, but still... even if you don't like her because she can't compare to Madonna, what about how she compares to other artists of her generation/genre? She isn't Madonna but would you rather see someone like Heidi Montag on the charts?
afrolito Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Musto musing about her being the next Madonna is the KISS OF DEATH. He's never known what he was talking about in regards to Madonna or anyone else. I like Gaga, but wearing kooky outfits, and talking about "art", does not equal Madonna. People are so desperate to usher Madonna off the stage, they have to crown a new chick every few years to replace her. Gaga is just the latest in a long line, but i'm sure there will be a new one next year. Meanwhile, the "old Madonna" is still very much here.

She isn't Madonna but would you rather see someone like Heidi Montag on the charts? I genuinely think that Lady Gaga's music is just cheap and uninteresting. My severe dislike is borne from her insistence that she's really doing something completely new and smart and outrageous. It backfires, to me - each new outfit or prop or embarassingly tacky video just reinforces her music's blandness. It's a shame, because she does have a voice, and she has the willingness to look like a total idiot (two good things that are exceedingly rare in pop music these days). But unfortunately her taste level is almost nil, and she's just not as smart and as clever as she thinks she is. Sure, she's smarter than a Heidi Montag or a Fergie or a Katy Perry, but choosing something wilfullly mediocre instead of something downright repellent isn't much of a choice. As for Madonna, there's simply no comparison. If Gaga can get past the posing and start churning out some decent material, then we'll talk.
Guest imalq Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 where does this notion come from that Madonna would be looking for a successor?
cosmic_system Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I used to like Gaga for...10 minutes I guess. Yes, she's talented but her album is just uninspiring. She sound a bit like Christina and a bit like Gwen. Even if Madonna's voice is nothing spectacular she just sounded unique back in the day and I believe now too. I also think Gaga is too much over the top, she think she's this avant garde artist but she's not, she just looks like an idiot lately. Again, she's very talented as a singer eve if I hate her with the piano, she's a good dancer but again too much over the top for me in everything she does. She's just a clown.
Guest ursaminorjim Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 where does this notion come from that Madonna would be looking for a successor? It's not a matter of Madonna looking for a successor, really, but that the public wants to elevate someone else in her place. Hence Madonna's alignment with whatever potential "new Madonna" in order to have her elder statesman cake and eat her relevant pop superstar cachet, too. At least, that's the notion Musto's floating in this little space-filling musing.
