thebigham Posted May 19, 2008 Author Posted May 19, 2008 HITS: THEY WILL POSSESS YOUR CHART: Death Cab for Cutie’s second major label release, on Atlantic, will top next Tuesday’s chart with a projected first-week tally of 140-150k, spurred by the hit single “I Will Possess Your Heart.” That puuts the Seattle PoMo band far ahead of Reprise’s still-dead Frank Sinatra, who’ll bow in the neighborhood of 85-90k, and Island/IDJ’s Mariah Carey, with an expected 65-70k. The debuting Jason Mraz (Atlantic) and Leona Lewis (Syco/J/RMG), should complete the Top 5, as both roll toward 60-65k. Welsh thrush Duffy (making her debut on the revived Mercury label), who’s riding a growing buzz from her irresistible single “Mercy,” will battle second-weeker Neil Diamond (Columbia) and the down-sliding Madonna (WB) for the sixth position, as all three head toward 55-60k. Toby Keith (Showdog/UMe) should wind up at #9, with 45-50k, while a fifth debut, 10 Years (Universal Republic), will vie with Keith Sweat (Rhino), both trending toward 30-35k. And now, we return our focus to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. (5/16a)

boy skeffington Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 I still wonder why HC is so week in pchysical sale, she's doing much better on digital than Mariah & Leona I'm sure some people will take this the wrong way but... Madonna appeals to more successful, urban, some might even say intelligent sectors of the population. Most cd's these days are bought at Wal-Mart and similar suburban-midwestern stores. People in major metropolitan areas don't buy cd's as much, they use the digital format. They can afford iPods. In LA, there's zero Wal-Mart's and less than 5 Targets in the actual city. There is 1 Virgin Megastore and a couple Best Buys. I remember when RAY OF LIGHT premiered in 3/98...something huge like 70% of its first-week sales came from Manhattan island alone. That same week, a huge percentage (80% perhaps) of Celine/Titanic sales were in the midwest/wal-mart. It sounds elitist, but Madonna does appeal, in general (see a couple members on this forum), to a more sophisticated crowd.

Guest jamesshot Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Holy Shit. Is HC going to plunge more than 50% this week?
Shane Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Biggest delusion ever on MadonnaNation. Hmmmm ... I'm not sure. I would have to say, in all honesty, that the Madonna fans I know are a fairly intelligent group.
Dindi Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Very sad. The album is dropping like a rock, which completely surprises me since you'd think a hit song and relatively good reviews would at least give it better legs.
Guest missy bi_tch Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Well then, it's time to look forward to live nation, by then madonna won't even chart in the top 10... finally it's time to retire.
doctorjosh Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 The disappointing numbers is due to the fact that Madonna has hardly promoted her album. Nowadays, a big hit single is simply not enough.
Guest Hafo Posted May 20, 2008 Posted May 20, 2008 Relax a bit, crowd. DC4C is forecast to do around 140K and it's only 50K at the moment. The next update (at around 63% and then at 80%) should give a considerable push to all titles.

Besides, HITSDAILYDOUBLE has had some very suspect numbers lately. I'm holding my breath for the official Soundscan ones on Wednesday. They were off by 11,000-odd last week.
