  1. It peaked at #37 on April 15th, 1984, dropped out of the Top 40 a week later and then didn't enter it again until August 3rd, 1985 (two weeks after its reissue as "The First Album").

Useless trivia for you - the week before Madonna/The First Album reached the UK Top 10 for the first time, it was at #15, two spots higher than LAV. The next week, TFA moved to #10 (LAV leapt to #2), then up to #6 (LAV stayed at #2), where they both stayed for another week. A few weeks later, LAV moved to #1 (TFA was #8 that week) and all up, the two albums spent 10 weeks together in the Top 10 at the same time.

Excellent. And I'm not sure exactly when ITG was added, but it and The First Album reissue must have been around the same time.

  2. I believe Borderline was shot first, then LS.. which is hard to believe as Borderhole is a proper video, LS is basic and shot in a white studio backdrop - an advertisement for the Madonna look is a great observation.

Then there's the legendary scrapped Holiday video sung over a hot pink backdrop IIRC, her look may have been like this

Wow! Never heard of 'video clubs'!

I thought they just did a quick video for MTV for Lucky Star just to cash in on the success?

It's such an amazing video though but so simple. I'd take this over Ray of Light any day!

I think they had video jukeboxes in pubs or something in Britain in the 80s?

I've got a copy of either Billboard or Cashbox Magazine from that era that featured MTV video playlists. "Everybody" appeared as a new release, but I only saw it once. Chances are, they played it once and then dropped it...

Awesome info! At least someone seen it. I'm shocked Burning Up got scant play though, great video and quintessential Madonna.

  3. Dead @ that lazy eye Borderline pic :rotfl:

in 1982 Everybody was released. it was a club hit. the video was played nowhere (maybe a few NY clubs).

in mid 1983 Burning Up is released as a double A side with Physical Attraction. PA actually more of a club hit, Burning Up video had minor club play but not on MTV.

The Everybody video should've been on Celebration (it's available on iTunes) but isn't quite a proper video is it? Did Burning Up get any video play on TV at all at the time? It should've, it's one of my faves by her :dramatic::wow::inlove: I loved discovering this brand new video on the Madonna video EP.

I still don't know whether Physical Attraction was really a double A-side - it was in the clubs (like Holiday/Lucky Star). Wikipedia seems to say no  - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Up_(Madonna_song)

  4. Yes, the new artwork appeared during the summer of 85 as I was annoyed as I just bought the old version (which I'm glad I have now!). They also added ITG to LAV album too.

Only the 12" for Holiday, LS and Borderline were re-released in 85. BU and Everybody were only available as US imports. Holiday re-entered the charts getting to No.2 the same week ITG was No.1 and CFY was still in the top twenty.

LS didn't re-chart and Borderline actually got a proper release in early 1986 supposedly to distract from Jellybean's release of Sidewalk Talk!

I thought Lisa Stevens said in a recent interview that radio picked up on Holiday and started playing it so a rushed edit was released to DJs and that's also why there's no video.

IIRC the original release of Madonna got to no 38 on the UK album charts, the one with the disgusting cover and title already with an eye on history got to #6 of course and must have been in the top 10 the same time as LAV. One of the early cash-ins by the greedy UK arm of Warners, I was so annoyed they did that and had to buy US import CD for the original cover.

  5. stop torturing yourself with avoidance!!! AVOID JOANNE not madonna.

its just as fabulous, IF NOT MORE, when you see it LIVE!!!!

If only more people took your advice. I never look at the thread for that tragic hasbeen, ignorance really is bliss!

  6. Regardless, she's a consistently excellent album AND singles artist.

    Er'body ain't able.

I agree. Singles is the métier for pop (think ABBA) and she is not Led Zep or Pink Floyd so if I were to pick which one she would be overall it would be singles artist, but she's good at both. Other examples include Prince (who a friend called a greatest hits artist which I didn't understand as he's very 50/50) and The Smiths.

  7. The setlist for this tour is drop dead amaze :drama: and from the little I've tried in vain to avoid, she seems to be more interactive with the audience this time. Love the RH tracks chosen as well.. I fucking KNEW iconic was going to be the opener.

  8. She ultimately is in a way. It's pop music, so her best songs are most often singles - particularly in the 80s she was a singles act. In the 90s she became more of an albums artist.

She does have at least 2 classic albums though, which is better than most pop acts. There's nothing wrong at all with being a singles act.. TIC sold for a reason.
