  1. Is this the thread for Moscow press reports and such?

Jewish group warns Madonna concert organizers, say Russia is an Orthodoxcountry

MOSCOW. Aug 8 (Interfax) - The Federation of Jewish Communities of

Russia (FJC) said Madonna's stage performances were amoral and urged all religious-minded people to abstain from attending her Moscow concert due on September 11.

"It is obvious to me, whether or not she uses religious symbols, a

person with religious and moral values should not attend her concert

because even without the use of religious symbols this is a very

frivolous and amoral show," head of the press department of the FJC

    Boruch Gorin said Tuesday.

As for the use by Madonna of crucifixes in her shows, he said, "It

is even more outrageous precisely considering the image associated with

    this singer."

"Various Christian confessions" have expressed their attitude

toward such a use of religious symbols, and "this leaves no doubt that

it is insulting to the feelings of believers," he said.

In her show, Madonna uses Jewish and Muslim religious symbols and

this for "me as a Jew, is shocking," Gorin said, adding that the fact

that she uses in her songs Jewish terminology was "rather illiterate and

    inconsiderate."

Gorin stressed that the organizers of such concerts in Moscow,

which he said is "the capital of Orthodoxy," ought to "be more tactful

toward the innermost in human moral; that is faith." Gorin reminded the

audience about the reaction of the Muslim world to the publication in

the Western media of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

  3. Madonna "crucified" in Rome, Vatican protests

    By Rachel Sanderson

ROME (Reuters) - Madonna staged a mock-crucifixion in the Italian capital on Sunday, ignoring a storm of protest and accusations of blasphemy from the Roman Catholic Church.

In a sold-out stadium just a mile from Vatican City, the lapsed-Catholic diva wore a fake crown of thorns as she was raised on a glittery cross during the Rome stop of her worldwide "Confessions Tour."

The Vatican had accused her of blasphemy and provocation for even considering staging the sham crucifixion on its doorstep, anger Madonna further enflamed prior to the show by inviting Pope Benedict to come and watch.

The self-styled "Queen of Pop" went on to pepper her two-and-a-half hour show with more controversial imagery, at one point showing photographs of the pope after those of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

"Did you know two miracles have taken place in Rome?," the star, dressed in skin-skimming black, later joked with the crowd. "Italy won the World Cup and the rain stopped before my show."

The 70,000 fans, crammed into the Olympic Stadium, shrugged off the scandal, by dancing, singing and jumping as she performed songs from her latest album "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and classics, such as "Like a Virgin."

Yet, the cheering lulled when she was raised on the cross and some fans from predominantly Roman Catholic Italy confessed their disappointment.

"The crucifixion was unnecessary and provocative. Because this is Rome, I wish she'd cut it out. But it's Madonna, she's an icon, and that balances out her need to provoke," said 39-year old Roman, Tonia Valerio.

It is not the first time Madonna, whose father is a Catholic Italian American, has caused religious anger for her controversial religious and sexual imagery.

Catholic leaders condemned as blasphemous her 1989 video for hit song "Like a Prayer," featuring burning crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna seducing a black Jesus.

In 2004, a Vatican group warned that her latest religious belief "Kabbalah," a mystical from of Judaism, was a potential threat to the Roman Catholic faithful.

And she looks likely to face another storm when the tour reaches Moscow in September, where the Russian Orthodox Church has advised its followers to boycott the show because of the crucifixion stunt, agency Interfax reported on Saturday.

Has Madonna crossed church for last time?

    Saturday, August 05, 2006

    Chuck Yarborough

    Plain Dealer Columnist

Madonna must think she's Sinead O'Connor. She's in trouble with the Vati can. Again. And she's not doing anything as silly as ripping up a picture on national TV. Madge's "Confes sions" show opens with the singer on a mirrored cross, wearing a faux crown of thorns. It drew lots of criticism here, as I reported before, but that's nothing compared to what she's getting in Rome, where she's scheduled to perform on Sunday. Her New York-based publicist, Liz Rosenberg, told the press, "Madonna doesn't think Jesus would be mad at her, as his teaching of loving thy neighbor and tolerance is Madonna's message as well." Ah, the Gospel of St. Madge. But I don't think Rome is buying it. Cardinal Ersilio Tonini, apparently speaking with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI, is calling for the lapsed Catholic to be excommunicated. Excuse me, but if she's a lapsed Catholic, hasn't she already excommunicated herself? I've got a better idea: She's a disciple of kabbalah, which is rooted in Judaism. Why not kill two birds with one stone and put her in a cell with Mel Gibson?

  5. And, from NY Times' Arts, Briefly:

Madonna Raises Hackles, This Time in Rome

At one point during Madonna’s latest show, her world-traveling “Confessions Tour,” she dons a fake crown of thorns and descends on a suspended, glittery cross in a mock crucifixion scene, a scene that is causing some outrage in Rome in anticipation of her scheduled appearance there on Sunday. In an unusual show of religious solidarity, Catholic, Muslim and Jewish leaders in the Italian capital united to condemn her, Reuters reported. “Being raised on a cross with a crown of thorns like a modern Christ is absurd,” the Rev. Manfredo Leone said from the Santa Maria Liberatrice church in Rome. “Doing it in the cradle of Christianity comes close to blasphemy.” Madonna is not a stranger to controversy — her 1989 video for “Like a Prayer” brought her plenty of condemnation — and will apparently not change her show for the Italian audience. People in London do not seem bothered by her antics, though: earlier this week a bronze cast of her hands was unveiled outside Wembley Arena as the first installment in the Square of Fame, intended to be the British equivalent of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

    Madonna's Concert Crucifixion Draws Ire

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

    Published: August 4, 2006

    Filed at 12:18 a.m. ET

ROME (AP) -- Madonna's plans to stage a mock crucifixion during a Sunday concert in Rome have drawn fire from religious leaders, who have condemned the stunt as ''an act of open hostility'' toward the Roman Catholic Church.

During the concerts of her ''Confessions'' world tour, the American diva appears crucified on a mirrored cross while wearing a crown of thorns.

The prospect of the scene being repeated at the concert in Rome's Olympic stadium, some 2 miles from the Vatican, prompted Catholic officials to denounce the act as a publicity stunt in bad taste.

''To crucify yourself in the city of the pope and the martyrs is an act of open hostility,'' Cardinal Ersilio Tonini was quoted as saying in La Stampa daily on Wednesday. ''It's a scandal created on purpose by astute merchants to attract publicity.''

Muslim and Jewish leaders also condemned the fake crucifixion.

''It's not the first time Madonna stages such an act. We deplore it, we feel it is an act of bad taste,'' said Mario Scialoja, the president of the Muslim World League in Italy.

''We express solidarity with the Catholic world,'' said Riccardo Pacifici, spokesman for Rome's Jewish community. ''It's a disrespectful act, and to do it in Rome is even worse.''

In May, the Catholic League in the United States expressed its discontent for the stunt after Madonna performed it at the tour's opening concert in Inglewood, California.

''Knock off the Christ-bashing,'' Catholic League president Bill Donohue said in a statement. ''It's just pathetic.''

Still, tickets for the Rome concert were selling quickly, with only about 100 left by Thursday, news agency ANSA reported.

Following concerts throughout North America, the ''Confessions'' tour continues through Sept. 21 with dates in Europe and Japan.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press on Thursday, the singer's New York-based spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, said: ''Madonna does not think Jesus would be mad at her, as his teaching of loving thy neighbor and tolerance is Madonna's message as well. The context of Madonna's performance on the crucifix is not negative nor disrespectful toward the church.''

  7. This week's Billboad has the midyear touring info. As reported, Rolling Stones have grossed $147.371m from 45 shows. No2 is U2, with $73.087m (from 28 shows). This info reflects boxscores from 11/1/05 to 5/16/06.
