Madame X is Madonna’s best effort in some time. She fuses different types of music and different generations of music into one song after song. One moment it’s a Latin beat, then I’m at a disco in ‘78 and then a nice rap. It’s amazing how she can do this musical fusion. And who just loved her at the piano?

My boyfriend listened to the whole album and appreciated it with great depth. That’s not his usual music preference but I’ve caught him listening to Future, Crave, Faz Gostoso and Butch I’m Loca a lot.

Whenever i listen to Batuka or God Control I think about what's going on in my country and it's facists (not my) president.

I’m still obsessing over the song and the video!! I included Batuka in my “ultimate sacred Madonna playlist” and placed it right after Shanti/Ashtangi. Guess what? Pure magic!!

  3. Well... there have been a lot of people getting flushed 😂 and like, I don’t care how many visitors come to this forum, as long as everyone is being respectable towards our Queen. On the other hand, if Madonna blocked every person she didn’t like in her Instagram comment section, she wouldn’t have had 14 million followers. But like I said, even if it’s just 10 of us here, talking about our passion for this amazing album, it’s enough for me personally. I donno. Just my opinion.

Wrong.  I mentioned two songs:  EO and Future about  having the most vocal effects.  Future I LOVE and is one of my favorites.  But the first time I listened to it I was like WTF, I hate this!  Then the second time I was blown away.   So I wonder if some of the people (and reviewers?) who had a harsh reaction had a similar experience.   Things like this can be very polarizing.

I have re listened to EO and I think people here are correct, I just don't care for the way she sings the song.  Music is one of my favorite albums of hers, but I Still  find Nobody's Perfect unlistenable due to vocal effects on that one.

Other songs I keep seeing mentioned like Batuka either I don't notice or it doesn't bother me.  She lets her natural voice shine in several songs, Crazy, Crave, Looking for Mercy.  Even when they are used, she uses her natural voice in other parts of the songs.

I gotcha. Agreed with a lot of what you said, but I LOVE EO!! My favorite song after Batuka. Also love Future! Had a similar reaction when I first heard it.

I’m wondering if people know Madonna’s voice at all. I heard critics say there’s auto tune and effects in every song and that’s why they don’t like the album. But I don’t hear it in many of them. Could it be they just don’t know about her voice? Or don’t I? It’s confusing.

Right. I’m kind of starting to think that rocknrolla is just trolling 🙄

Batuka is one of my faves on the album but I have found myself wondering what it would sound like with less vocoder and perhaps in a deeper register... something like the demo of Its So Cool.

I agree with what someone suggested earlier with using less effects live. I think to the casual listener they just think she’s miming. She posted an IG clip or story a while back of Batuka being rehearsed and she was using her lovely deeper live vox so hopefully we get to hear more of that.

I’m with you when it comes to Batuka. I LOVE the song and the vocoder makes her voice sound kind of like “tribal” if you know what I mean, like she’s part of the Batukadeiras group. I don’t know how to explain it without possibly offending anyone... but anyway, I also wonder what it would sound like if she didn’t use any voice effects. But love the song nonetheless.

I feel as though we are listening to different songs.  Her voice sounds completely natural to me on this song, with the exception of autotune used on the word “lost” a couple of times.

When she sings “I wasn’t lost, believe me,” she sounds very Evita voice, as she does on Killers Who Are Partying.

    Exactly!

Extreme Occident is probably the most natural she sounds in the entire record. 🙄

    Yes!

That's weird I don't notice anything in come alive really.

For me, she sounds very unnatural in extreme occident, whatever is going on.

Well, I guess you hear what you hear, I dunno what else to say hun

No one else hears the auto tune in EO?  Her voice sounds very processed to me

Processed simply means mastered. Autotune is a completely different thing. And honestly, she doesn’t sound all that different from her live vocals. Madonna sings live very well and hits pretty high notes. Of course they’ll process her voice for the CD quality, but there’s no vocoder in EO like in DB or autotune like in Batuka or Come Alive.

@Jairo wasn’t that an example of a song where she does not use it? Wasn’t that Mirwais’ point? That she uses it on some tracks, and there are other tracks with her natural vocals? Not sure if I interpreted his comments incorrectly, though. Very possible.

No, you interpreted it correctly. Mirwais specifically said “listen to Extreme Occident, her voice transcends naturally”! Meaning not all of the songs he did with her have autotune. And then when he says that no one bothers other artists for their use of autotune, he obviously refers to other songs Madonna did where she chose to have it. Anyways, all I hear in Extreme Occident is her voice being mastered, but there’s no autotune.

I think the lyric is: “Will we taste our freedom in the right way? Will we stand together?”

Don’t disagree with what you’re saying, though. It is a universal figure she refers to with the “old man” image. But that’s why I think it represents a universal concept, of which there are many specific examples.

Also, there’s a concept in Christianity of the “old Adam” and the “new creation” — the old Adam is the sinner, which is “drowned” in the waters of baptism. The emerging person has experienced a rebirth ... so, applying this concept to her lyrics here, she could mean to contain and control the old sinful person inside of us and embrace the new person who cares for others in the community and takes responsibility for their own action (tastes freedom in the right way). Some may think that is off-the-wall, I know, especially since historical slavery was clearly oppression from outside (evil) forces. But Madonna, in Dark Ballet, talks about “the storm” being “inside of us,” too ... and she talks about there being “a storm ahead” in Batuka. So I think it’s possible to have an “internalized” interpretation, too ... ? If you know what I mean ... That we all, individually, have to choose to exercise our freedoms carefully and responsibly, with love for our neighbors. And she may mean that we have a selfish “old man” (ego?) inside that we have to overcome in order to pursue nobler dreams.

Just another thought. Hope it deepens and broadens appreciation — I don’t mean to suggest this possible interpretation to the exclusion of the more obvious and literal possibilities.

Yeah, it’s hard to decipher if she’s saying “but when we can stop it all” or “when we taste our freedom”, but either way she’s saying she wants to do it “in the right way”, meaning with love. She’s said that many times in the interviews as well. Like, if we use violent force, we are not any different from the very oppressors we try to overcome. And I like your interpretation about the “old man”. Madonna’s lyrics should never be taken literally. Ever! Not even BIM! Lol She’s all about conveying messages, influencing people’s minds to think outside the box, to have a deeper perception, to challenge the system. Nothing is as it seems.

I agree, though I love the weird vocal edits with the nutcracker.. it's done well there because it's supposed to be so weird and fucked up..

but I really don't like it in "I don't search I find", for example.. it's such a good song so it's a shame.. and I hope we won't have to hear the wonderful live sounds ruined by some autotune choices.. that's where M's perfectionism hurts her (imo), because she always likes to sound like the album version, especially when there's vocal effects..

the tour is gonna have a more live feel with great musicians in a theater, so let's hope she isn't gonna ruin that by altering her voice

    I didn’t notice autotune In I Don’t Search... Lol

to me they’re most prominent in Batuka and Come Alive, but I actually like it because it makes her sound super laid back.

So I showed the video to my best friend at the weekend and she really loved it, except for one line in the song (which is one of my favorite ones): Get that old man. Put him into jail. She thought that these statements kind of mimic the way Trump and his supporters speak and that, given the large fanbase M has, she should know better and not sink to their level and reduce her powerful voice to such poor "hate speech".

Of course, I wholeheartedly disagreed and told her that there are indeed many "old men" who are very criminal and simply deserve to be put into jail for violating human rights. Well, she said that there still is freedom of speech in the US, so strictly speaking Trump's not a criminal. Needless to say we couldn't come to an agreement - lol.

    What do YOU think??

PS: I think the fact that we were having this kind of conversation because of Madonna is great and a testament to her power and relevance!

Remember Madonna has never been politically correct in her wording. Also, old man is a universal figure here. He could be the king who ordered to bring slaves from Africa, he could be the church leader who ordered to forbid Batuka music. Also, Madonna believes in fixing the world with love, not tyranny! Hence she sings “and if we can stop it all, in the right way, will we stand together?...” So even if she did mean Trump, her goal is not to actually put him in jail. That ain’t gonna happen. She’s trying to shine the light on how criminals in power get away with oppression and hate century after century, be it Kings or church leaders or presidents.

No offense to your friend, but again, why do people always nitpick everything Madonna says or does? She’s an artist, not a president.

Anyways, to me personally “get that old man” is my favorite part in the song ☺️

At 2:18-2:19...an arm moves away and I see Madonna's eye/BROW and nose...thanks though. For me, it's Madonna just like she was on that horse in Medellin.

Agreed. It was proven somewhere that it was indeed Madonna riding a horse in Medellín. But can someone maybe take a screenshot of Madonna’s face behind that arm? Pretty sure we’ll recognize her when we see her.

  14. Omg I love reading everyone’s comments. Yes, it does transport me to another world as well, and Madonna looks stunning and so mystical! The ghost ships straight up give me chills. Love the tear on one of the lady’s cheek at the end. The cozy feeling of the video transports through the screen. Makes me wanna sing and dance and then cuddle up with all those amazing women and their blankets 😁♥️✨

Based on what we saw from the Madame X doc - they could edit one together from the Birthday footage taken in Marrakech. I think i would actually prefer to see that as she looked amazing, and it would so fit with the music of the song.

    Exactly!! So fingers crossed!

And @Katypatra, thanks for all the cultural info. Fascinating. It makes me love the video, Madonna, and the Batukadeiras even more!

I think the same..and the storm represents the dark period we are facing..after it, we will have the sun.

Yes! The video AND the song definitely have a lot of symbolism.

And I LOVE Madonna in this video!!

She’s very humble, very sweet, embracing the beat of the drums and the presence of the Batukadeiras. I love her smiling, like she’s really enjoying it, and at the same time when she’s closing her eyes and holding her hands up in  despair, to me it shows how aware she is about all the injustice and that she’s really passionate about bringing light into this world of oppression and ignorance.
