  1. Yes, Madonna's video clips are better than any other artists by an absolute mile. Would love a video poll. Top 30 would be great as there are so many. Mooncrown, love that your song of the week is back.

Thanks Janelle! Glad to be back.

I think we can do this! I'll put up a new poll for the videos and revise the name of the thread.

  2. A video list could be interesting!

Yes ! I could definitely be down with hosting a music video list! She is as much a visual artist as she is a singer/songwriter and also you may love a video even though you don't necessarily love a song or not like a video but love a song so the results will be interesting.

I can include some stats on the videos and other interesting tidbits when we count them down.

    Thanks for the idea Chelle!

Now how many? Top 20? Top 25? Top 30? More?

  3. I don't know where the idea of the MadonnaNation Top Song Countdowns were single-only came from, as that was never the case. The most recent one in 2013 allowed any song, the same with the one from last decade back in 2007. The MadonnaNation countdowns was always a community effort and event, as a lot of us consider everyone family. That's why there's the write ups, to make it feel like a celebration and bring it down to a personal level to show that everyone connects to Madonna's songs in different ways.

Here's a link to the most recent one from 2013:

And the one from 2007. Don't know if there were any others, but this is the only surviving one that was to be found:

Sorry whoop for some reason I thought yours was limited to singles when it clearly was not. I think we should all wait to do your countdown next year instead so I took down the poll .

    Looking forward to participating :)

  4. Stephen I always loved doing your top 50 list at our former forum residence and would love participating in it again if that is what you will do.

I will say that it might be interesting doing a non singles list. That way it would be different from the one Whoop does who has probaly done the list for some time at this forum.

I am interested in what my non single list would look like since my favorite song is a single. But then I would like to see my list of her whole discography so I don't know! Well after Whoop does his list I can just mesh them together.

I would be happy with anything you want to do. I know very well the wonderful job you do. If we do a whole discography I do vote for a top 100. The cuts after my top 25 are devastating. If we do non singles I think a top 50 will be okay.

I look forward to whatever you do Stephen! :)

Thanks for the kind words Lisa! I am kind of leaning towards a Non-Singles list if I do it and yes I think Top 50 would be good if we went that way. Let me think about it some more :lightbulb:

    "You'll See"

You think that I can't live without your love
    You'll see,
You think I can't go on another day.
    You think I have nothing
    Without you by my side,
    You'll see
    Somehow, some way

You think that I can never laugh again
    You'll see,
You think that you destroyed my faith in love.
You think after all you've done
I'll never find my way back home,
    You'll see
    Somehow, someday

    [Chorus:]

    All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
    I know I'll survive
    I know I'll stay alive,
    All on my own
I don't need anyone this time
    It will be mine
No one can take it from me
    You'll see

You think that you are strong, but you are weak
    You'll see,
It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat.
I have truth on my side,
    You only have deceit
    You'll see, somehow, someday

    [Chorus2:]

    All by myself
I don't need anyone at all
    I know I'll survive
    I know I'll stay alive,
    I'll stand on my own
I won't need anyone this time
    It will be mine
No one can take it from me
    You'll see

    You'll see, you'll see
    You'll see, mmmm, mmmm

This absolutely beautiful new song from her Something To Remember ballad compilation, her first collaboration with songwriter David Foster, finds Madonna scorned but not defeated. Her voice is so strong and confident on this song and was one of the first examples of the positive effect her vocal training for Evita had on her singing. I don't think many people (aside from her diehard fanbase) thought she was capable of delivering such a powerful and moving performance. Lyrically it speaks of being deceived by someone you thought you could trust but instead of crumbling, she rises up even stronger. I think all of us have had someone (or many someones) in their lives that they would love to have sung this to. It's a kind of bitter revenge song but it's a very classy one and I think she pulls it off with ease and tremendous poise.

Favorite Lyric: It takes more strength to cry, admit defeat

Favorite Musical Part : The Spanish guitar

Favorite Vocal Part: Her upper register when she sings "I don't need anyone at all"

  6. I'm confused. Are Whoop's Top 40 and Mooncrown's Top 50 two separate things?

The more countdowns the better, in my opinion!

I think they are a little different as mine includes all songs and is a strict countdown while I think whoop's is just for the singles and included some write-ups from members- is that right?

I would be fine with doing both but I don't want people not to do whoop's next year if they do this one now.

Maybe I should just do a non-singles list and then there would be no duplication? Would that work for people?

  7. I was planning on doing the madonnanation top 40 next year after the tour had completed....

OK no worries - Thanks for letting me know whoop.

I think we can wait until after the tour to do your Top 40 instead of doing a list now. That will give us something to keep us occupied next year after the tour wraps up while we are waiting for M's next move

  8. That's really nice of you Mooncrown, thanks. I've learned that one of the best ways to heal is to talk about it. I was closed mouthed about things in my life for too long. Talking about it gave me the release I so desperately needed.

I couldn't agree more. Your story really touched me as I also did not have a great relationship with my Dad growing up. There was a lot of mental abuse that my brothers and my Mom went through for many years. I think he was hurt in his life and unfortunately never admitted it and was never able to deal with it in a healthy way. He has been gone since 1993 and I too try to remember the happy times like when he would take me to the record store so I could buy albums on new release days. I wish you didn't have to go through all that pain but I am happy that you have now healed and found peace.

  9. I think of you, Jan, when I hear this song now.

My dad died of AIDS in 1989. The same year Like A Prayer was released. This album saved me. I didn't have a great relationship with my dad as a child, he was mentally abusive and a drug addict. But later, in my teens, we reconciled. Then the next thing I know, he's dying.

The line, "don't let memory play games with your mind". So true.

I only remember the good times now, like when he taught me how to play baseball and took us to the movies.

This song saved my life. So did Oh Father.

I'm sorry to hear that WeboGirl but glad you were able to find a way to hold on to the positive rather than dwell on the negative.

Music can be so powerful and this is one of those songs that speaks to a lot of people.

Thanks so much for sharing your story.

  10. Promise+to+try.jpg

    "Promise To Try"

Little girl don't you forget her face
    Laughing away your tears
When she was the one who felt all the pain

Little girl never forget her eyes
    Keep them alive inside
I promise to try -- it's not the same

Keep your head held high -- ride like the wind
Never look behind, life isn't fair
That's what you said, so I try not to care

Little girl don't run away so fast
I think you forgot to kiss -- kiss her goodbye

Will she see me cry when I stumble and fall
Does she hear my voice in the night when I call
Wipe away all your tears, it's gonna be all right

I fought to be so strong, I guess you knew
I was afraid you'd go away, too

Little girl you've got to forget the past
    And learn to forgive me
I promise to try -- but it feels like a lie

Don't let memory play games with your mind
She's a faded smile frozen in time
I'm still hanging on -- but I'm doing it wrong
Can't kiss her goodbye -- but I promise to try
This album cut from the LAP album co-written with Pat Leonard was the first time Madonna directly addressed the loss of her mother as a young child in song. This was Madonna at her most raw and vulnerable and it's a beautiful and heartbreaking moment in time in her vast career. You can practically hear her tearing up and her voice cracking with emotion and whether you have experienced this kind of loss or not, you can't help but feel something. The lyric is sung from the perspective of the older Madonna talking to her younger self and trying to convince her that it is OK to let go of the pain and to keep her mother's memory as a comfort. The simple piano and then the gorgeous cello solo after the bridge are the perfect accompaniment to further convey the somber and melancholic tone of the lyrics and vocal. It's no wonder she has never performed this live as it is so personal and close to home that she would probably never be able to get through it without breaking down. This song challenged what pop music could sound like and what topics it could explore - just plain magnificent.
Favorite Lyric : She's a faded smile frozen in time
Favorite Musical Moment: The cello solo
Favorite Vocal Moment: The sadness in her voice when she sings, " I guess you knew, I was afraid you'd go away too"
  11. Great to have your song of the week back Mooncrown.

You have returned with a beauty. Probably my favourite song from MDNA. Interestingly enough, I did not love it at first as thought it lacked a great melody. Well, I don't think like that anymore. One of those songs that took me a few listens and then BAM, it all clicked into place. It has a trance like quality and the lyrics are interesting. Especially love the build up throughout the song. Great song and production.

Thanks Janelle! Glad to be back ! It was hard staying away so long

  12. "I'm Addicted"

When did your name change from a word to a charm?
No other sound makes the hair stand up on the back of my arm
All of the letters push to the front of my mouth
And saying your name is somewhere between a prayer and a shout
And I can’t get it out

When did your name change from language to magic?
I’d write it again on the back of my hand,
And I know it sounds tragic

    Feels like a drug
    And I can’t get enough
And it fits like a glove
    I’m addicted to your love
    I’m addicted to your love
    I’m addicted to your love

I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your...
I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your love

    Now that your name
Pumps like the blood in my veins
Pulse through my body, igniting my mind
It’s like MDMA and that’s OK

    Your name's like a drug
    And I can’t get enough
And it fits like a glove
    I’m addicted to your love

I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your...
I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your love

    I need this exchange
I don’t care if you think that I’m strange
Something happens to me when I hear your voice
Something happens to me and I have no choice

I need to hear your name
    Everything feels so strange
I’m ready to take this chance
    I need to dance

    Feels like a drug
    And I can’t get enough
And it fits like a glove
    I’m addicted to your love

I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your...
I’m addicted, I’m addicted, I’m addicted to your love

MDMA, MDMA, MDMA, MDMA (I’m addicted)
MDMA, MDMA, MDMA, MDMA (I’m addicted)

Song of the week is back after a long hiatus. After the excitement of the RH album release, I decided to stay away from all Madonna news sites and forums to avoid any tour spoilers but now that I have seen it, I don't need to worry any longer (and it was definitely more than worth depriving myself!!) Anyway, onto this week's song...

There's always one or two songs on her albums that most fans think should have been singles. For MDNA, those songs are probably Love Spent and this dance gem. I was immediately taken with this song on first listen and I still love it to this day - one of the best songs for me on the album. I love the trance-like quality of the verses and how it builds to the more frantic chorus. I also enjoy the transition into the bridge when that warm wash of synths come in. My only negative is the "MDMA" part goes on a bit too long at the end and is a bit repetitive but that's just a small part of an otherwise amazing song. This was truly a missed opportunity to have it released - would love to have seen a video for this but at least it got performed on the tour with some very creative choreography.

Favorite Lyric: All of the letters push to the front of my mouth

And saying your name is somewhere between a prayer and a shout

Favorite Musical Part: The synths leading into the bridge

Favorite Vocal Part: "I need to dance"

What do you think of this song?

  13. I was at the show last night and I can't say enough how AMAZING it was!! I have purposely kept myself in the dark before the tour by staying away from this forum and Instagram and other sites for the past few months so that everything would be a complete surprise. I think it's the first tour in a long time (probably before internet!) that I didn't have any spoilers in advance. I am so glad I did that - it made it even more special for me. I also had floor seats for the first time since Blond Ambition near the end of the heart and the energy was just incredible. So many special moments and memories: Impromptu performance of Ghosttown, her tears afterwards, the setlist with such rarely performed songs : TB, DAD, WTG, and Love Don't Live Here Anymore - Did not see any of those coming! So happy right now - catching up on all the news now and so happy to see the glowing reviews for the show, her positive energy , and her voice (finally!)

Nobody can touch what she does at 20 years old let alone 57!

"Are you With Me?" Hell Yeah!!!!
