    [intro]

    Holiday celebrate[x4]

    [Chorus]

    If we took a holiday

    Took some time to celebrate

Just one day out of life

It would be, it would be so nice

    [Verse 1]

    Everybody spread the word

    We're gonna have a celebration

    All across the world

    In every nation

It's time for the good times

Forget about the bad times, oh yeah

    One day to come together

    To release the pressure

    We need a holiday

    [Chorus]

    [Verse 2]

You can turn this world around

And bring back all of those happy days

    Put your troubles down

    It's time to celebrate

Let love shine and we will find

    A way to come together

    And make things better

    We need a holiday

    [Chorus]

    [bridge]

    Holiday celebrate[x2]

    [Chorus]

    [Outro]

    Holiday celebrate[x2]

    Holiday, celebration

    Come together in every nation

I don't think a party or major life celebration is complete unless this song is played - this is that song that gets everyone on the dance floor. I have to say that when it first came out , I got a little sick of it because it was so overplayed but today, I can't hear it enough and when it's not the extended album version, I feel cheated. I find it impossible to be sad whenever this song comes on-it instantly gets me smiling and singing along. It's a simple song but Madonna's enthusiasm and passion once again makes even the simple spectacular and universal. This is an anthem and one of those songs that will stand the test of time - the very definition of a classic. She could sing this at every live show as far as I'm concerned and I will never complain. LOVE IT!!!

  4. A true reality check from the album Erotica. This song explores the many situations you can place yourself into, through no fault of your own.

Everyone has been hurt by friends or lovers, but this song puts a hard perspective on it. The opening line “Well, I know form experience that if you have to ask for something more than once or twice, it wasn’t yours in the first place”. Truer words have never been spoken. I grew up learning to hide my feelings. I never let on to people that I cared, even if I did. When you open the door to someone, you risk losing a part of yourself. I never wanted that to happen to me. Probably a little selfish on my part. But, the part when you realise that they actually "don't want what you want" is not worth it.

I so agree with this interpretation WeboGirl and I can so relate to it as well. I think I unfortunately learned this lesson too late after I had trusted and made myself vulnerable to people who I thought were friends who turned out to be anything but. It really does feel like losing a part of yourself when this happens. As a result I became very guarded about who I let in which in a way was kind of a good thing.

Thanks for sharing your personal stories-it's good to hear how music helps people cope - it is truly a healer in so many ways

Fantastic song - absolutely love it!

I know for sure his heart is here with me
Though I wish him back, I know he cannot see
    My hands trembling
I know he hears me sing

I light this candle and watch it throw
    Tears on my pillow
And if there is a Christ, he'll come tonight
    To pray for Spanish eyes

And if I have nothing left to show
    Tears on my pillow
What kind of life is this, if God exists
Then help me pray for Spanish eyes

He had to fight like all the rest
In the barrio all the streets are paved with fear
    I don't understand
At least he was a man

I light this candle and watch it throw
    Tears on my pillow
And if there is a Christ, he'll come tonight
    To pray for Spanish eyes

And if I have nothing left to show
    Tears on my pillow
What kind of life is this, if God exists
Then help me pray for Spanish eyes

How many lives will they have to take?

    How much heartache?

How many suns will they have to burn?

Spanish eyes, when will they ever learn?

You were not the Maravilla in our minds
We were proud to fight but we cannot win this blind
Stand your guns against the wall
Who's next in line to fall?

I light this candle and watch it throw
    Tears on my pillow
And if there is a Christ, he'll come tonight
    To pray for Spanish eyes

And if I have nothing left to show
    Tears on my pillow
What kind of life is this, if God exists
Then help me pray for Spanish eyes

    Tus lagrimas de tristeza
    No me dejan olvidarte
    Your tears of sadness
Will not let me forget you

How many lives will they have to take?
    How much heartache?
How many suns will they have to burn?
Spanish eyes, when will they ever learn?

This penultimate track from the LAP album is a touching spanish-flavored ballad. It can be taken literally as someone pining away for a loved one who is off at war but it has been said that this is a metaphor for the AIDS struggle which makes sense since Madonna was one of the first celebrities to really bring attention to and speak out in support of those afflicted with the disease even when it wasn't "cool" to do so. Whatever your interpretation of the song, it is a beautiful song delivered with compassion, vulnerability and strength. This was always one of my Mom's favorite M songs and always makes me think of her although she thought for a while that she was singing "My life's a candle" in the chorus  I know it will probably never happen in a million years, but would love to hear an acoustic version on tour in the future. One can dream...

Favorite Lyric: How many suns will they have to burn?

Favorite Musical Part : That final guitar into the chimes

Favorite Vocal Part : The gorgeous bridge section

    [Verse 1]

I'm in love with you, you silly thing

    Anyone can see

What is it with you, you silly thing

    Just take it from me

It was not a chance meeting

    Feel my heart beating

    You're the one

You could take all this, take it away

    I'd still have it all

Because I've climbed the tree of life

And that is why, no longer scared if I fall

    [Chorus 1]

When I get lost in space

I can return to this place

    Because, you're the one

    [Chorus 2]

    Nothing fails

    No more fears

    Nothing fails

    You washed away my tears

    Nothing fails

    No more fears

    Nothing fails

    Nothing fails

    [Chorus 3]

    I'm not religious

    But I feel so moved

    Makes me want to pray

    Pray you'll always be here

    I'm not religious

    But I feel such love

    Makes me want to pray

It is still a mystery to me how this 3rd single from the American Life album was not a huge hit. This song has it all: Beautiful melody, gorgeous vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and a dramatic choral climax. This song immediately stood out for me on first listen and it still touches me deeply every time I hear it, almost always bringing me to tears. I love the marriage of acoustic and electronic sounds which are done to perfection giving the song a classic warm feel while also keeping it current. When that choir comes in out of nowhere, it is a moment - a truly religious experience (pun intended). That whole section with all the different melodies is just brilliant and chill inducing. Then, it drops out as suddenly as it came - just magical. Clearly I love this song so much and anyone I've ever played it for also marvels at its beauty and emotional resonance(both fan and non-fan alike). Truly one of her most beautiful and emotionally powerful songs.

Favorite Lyric: Because I've climbed the tree of life

And that is why, no longer scared if I fall

Favorite Vocal Moment: The entire choral section

Favorite Musical Moment: The part right after the chorus drops out

    [Verse 1]
You can call me a sinner
You can call me a saint
Celebrate me for who I am
Dislike me for what I ain't

Put me up on a pedestal
Or drag me down in the dirt
Sticks and stones will break my bones
But your names will never hurt

    [Chorus 1]
    I'll be the garden
    You be the snake
All of my fruit is yours to take
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow

    Because

    [Chorus 2]
    This is who I am
    You can
    Like it or not
    You can
    Love me or leave me
But I'm never going to stop

    No no

    [Verse 2]
    Cleopatra had her way
    Matahari too
Whether they were good or bad
    Is strictly up to you

Life is a paradox and it doesn't make much sense
Can't have the Femme without the Fatale
    Please don't take offense
Don't let the fruit rot under the vine
Fill up your cup and let's drink the wine
Better the devil that you know
Your love for me will grow
    Because

    [Chorus 2][x2]

    [bridge]
    No no you know[repeat]

    [Chorus 1]

    [Chorus 2]

    [Outro]
    No no you know[repeat]

The closing song on the Confessions album shows that defiant take me or leave me attitude that we all love in Madonna. This song has an almost anthemic tone to it and wouldn't be out of place in a musical. This is Madonna saying I'm still here no matter what life has thrown at me and you can either love me or hate me but either way I will stay true to who I am and that's a fantastic message for anyone to hear. She makes great use of her lower register here and also has some quite good lyrics amid the cliches. Her performance of this song during the Confessions Tour is so simple, yet so captivating and powerful - one of her great live moments in my opinion. Hearing this song makes me sad that she never finished writing any of the musicals she was working on as I think she has a fantastic gift for what works on the big stage.

Favorite Lyric : Can't have the Femme without the Fatale

    Favorite Musical Part: The Outro

Favorite Vocal Part: "Your love for me will grow"

Ok so the votes are in and the majority of members wanted a top 40 video countdown so that's what we'll do. The rules are simple, just rank your top 40 Madonna videos (#1 being your favorite and #40 being your least favorite) and post them in this thread and I will tally them up and count them down with some stats and some gifs from Isaac Harris. [intro]
    Como puede ser verdad

    [Verse 1]
Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
Just like I'd never gone, I knew the song
A young girl with eyes like the desert
It all seems like yesterday, not far away

    [Chorus]
Tropical the island breeze, all of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be, la isla bonita
And when the samba played, the sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes, your Spanish lullaby

    [Verse 2]
I fell in love with San Pedro
Warm wind carried on the sea, he called to me
    Te dijo te amo
I prayed that the days would last, they went so fast

    [Chorus]

    [bridge]
I want to be where the sun warms the sky
When it's time for siesta you can watch them go by
Beautiful faces, no cares in this world
Where a girl loves a boy, and a boy loves a girl

    [Pre-Chorus]
Last night I dreamt of San Pedro
It all seems like yesterday, not far away

    [Chorus 2x]

    [Outro]
    Te dijo te amo
    El dijo que te ama

The 5th single from the True Blue album marks the first time Madonna would pay tribute to her love of Latin culture in song. This song is just timeless - it could have been released just yesterday as it has a classic melody and sound. Madonna's warm and sultry delivery really sells it and takes you away to the beautiful island she references in the song. I know this was originally written with Michael Jackson in mind but I can't imagine anyone but her pulling this off. Madonna obviously loves this song as she has performed it in many of her live shows in various incarnations from gypsy to disco and with each one the incredible spirit and essence of the song shines through. I never tire of this song - it's just that good!

Favorite Lyric: A young girl with eyes like the desert

Favorite Musical Part: The instrumental break after the bridge

Favorite Vocal Part: The whole bridge

Favorite Tour Performance : The Drowned World Tour

  10. shall we include live performances??

Actually I was thinking of doing a live performance list at some point too - maybe we should save those for that list since there are so many with concerts and tv appearances. I would include any live performances that were released as official videos though such as Dress You Up. I'm also thinking of including some of her video interludes from concerts such as Paradise from DWT and Bedtime Story from RIT.

When we are ready to vote I will post a list to choose from so we all know which videos are included.
