  1. I've only heard it one and a half times before it cut off and I couldn't get it back :chuckle:

It's a trip. You feel like you're kinda getting into it at one and a half mins and then it alienates you. It's unsettling. You don't know what to expect.

It's gonna be a lot of fun to listen to this more and get into it. I really like the spoken word part. It is a mish-mash but as others have pointed out I think that's part of the acts of the "ballet".

My one gripe is that the lyrics are a bit trite in places 'cause your world is such a shame'- it's easier to get away with that in a more conventional pop song, but in this darker piece it zooms in upon it. Production is great and I actually really like her vocals in a lot of it.

I'm excited to see how I feel about it when it hits midnight here in the UK.

  2. These REVIEWS  . It seems like this is an album to really dive into and explore, I especially like the description of musical density and the way she manipulates her voice. I love that she’s giving us another unique album to add to her illustrious collection. She changes it up every time.

Hopefully this’ll help with UK album sales. Good word of mouth will be a help too.

  3. 'Ever since she emerged from New York in the early 1980s, Madonna’s moderate abilities in music, singing and dancing have been more than made up for in searing ambition, an ability to work with the right people at the right time and a brittle form of bravery, with outer toughness masking inner frailty. Now comes probably her boldest, certainly her strangest, album yet. Madame X veers between pop, Latin and clubby dance music, jumps from the personal to the political and is bound together by an exotic, breezy mood that feels strangely intimate, as if she is revealing a hitherto hidden part of her soul. She isn’t really, of course, but she does a good job of pretending she is.'

(can't read the rest either, I'll see if I can pick up the Times tomorrow- I'm sure it'll surface somewhere)

They can't not give a back handed compliment to her can they?

  4. Crave in particular would be eaten up by radio 1 had it been released by Ellie Goulding (or whatever vapid ‘artist’ they play nowadays).

Medellin is great, it wont have been playlisted on radio 2 for as long as it has been if it was something to do with the quality of the song that it’s been ignored by radio 1. Listeners are clearly responding well to it on that station, and yet it’s somehow not good enough for radio 1? :chuckle:

Mills just makes me cringe tbh.

  5. Not a glowing review, but also one where I think a score above 3/5 would match the description.

I don’t think ‘some of the songs are weird’ is necessarily bad. I think it’s possible to have that reaction to some of the songs on Music and that’s one of my favourite M albums. Plus, the songs released so far in my opinion do get a lot better with repeat listens (esp Medellin and Future).

We will see. Still loads of other reviews to come. Imo with the songs released so far it seems obvious that this will be much better than MDNA (and didn't RS give that 3.5?).

  6. Yeah I vaguely remember people saying she came across better in the studio than on TV. She did seem quite stiff last time she was on GN. But I think the format is usually a gift for celebs to come across good-- they prepare jokes and whole stories in advance and stuff

I haven't watched it in a while cause I think it comes across abit canned and I liked it more when it was less produced, but I think it's a really good idea for her in general. Get that no.1 album Madge. :confessions:

  7. Ah, the lyrics to this song sound much more poignant and touching given the current media furore.

I'm going through it yeah I know you see the tragic in it

Just hold on to the little bit of magic in it,

Died a thousand times, managed to survive.

  8. It’s the first massive exposure any musical element of Madonna has hit the general public since, what, Celebration in 2009? Maybe 4 Minutes? MDNA and RH didn’t produce big hit singles at all here.

I’ve had a lot of friends message me about it. Nothing good. It’s sad, really. As has been noted, the extra tour dates announcement was obviously planned to come after a well received performance at Eurovision and the announcement instead comes across as awkward.

If people want to take this performance and use it as the signifier of what they think about Madonna, ignoring all the times she’s killed it on stage, then that’s their loss in a way. The one good thing that may come out of this is that she does take more vocal coaching and sorts out whatever went wrong on Saturday

I’m just going to try to ignore anything on social media until this blows over. :tigger:I don’t like to make negative posts like this, especially as a new poster, but it’s just been a downer of a weekend as a fan.

  9. I hope she can turn it around somehow, general consensus on the performance is that she can’t sing. I mean whatever in a way- she wasn’t off during the entirety of the song and had some good bits— but her reputation has been hit a lot sadly in my anecdotal experience. Hopefully it all blows over 🤭

  10. Yeah I think she’s had a lot of good vocal moments recently, on RHT I thought she sounded wonderful on True Blue for example and I think the whole arena loved it.

However she missed the mark quite hugely here, not because the performance was all bad (it wasn’t) but because it’s the biggest European audience possible and now everyone’s going to think she’s just a bad singer. I’ve seen a depressing amount of negative feedback from those who are usually open to Madonna’s music. No backing vocalists and an arrangement that highlights the vocals? I feel embarrassed for her 😞 the dark tone overall didn’t help. I understand why that tone was chosen, to fit with the political angle of the performance, but I think she’d have been able to overcome some shaky vocals with a brighter performance of, say, Medellin and Music/Hung Up(or a brighter arrangement of LaP)

  11. Well it’s a shame it wasn’t a great moment for her. I don’t think her vocals were awful but there were too many bum notes and of course everyone focuses on those, but that’s kinda expected in a show where vocals matter a lot.

That arrangement of Like a Prayer is so flat :(. It was such a moment in both MDNA and Rebel Heart tour and I’m not sure why it was so stripped back here. It only made the focus more on her vocals which, as I say I don’t think were awful, but had too many bum notes.

I quite liked Future but it wasn’t the right song, she should have gone with Medellin. The whole thing could have been much more uplifting than it was. However I liked the interlude a lot and it’s cool that she got the Palestinian flag in there.
