I think it's the way you worded it. Madonna didn't actually know that the work Mirwais presented her wasn't entirely his own. Her lawyers have said this. Using inverted commas implies that Madonna has somehow claimed unfair credit for someone else's work. She didn't. Mirwais, on the other hand, did. Madonna's contribution to "God Control" isn't under question, and nor should any of her other credits on the album. Had you said, "I wonder if there are any other songs on Madame X that Mirwais 'wrote' that were actually written by someone else?", I don't think anyone would have had an issue with what you were saying (since Casey has actually highlighted that Mirwais's integrity should be called into question, even though he's laying the blame squarely on Madonna).

William didn't co-write "Frozen", though - it was Pat Leonard. In any case, eventually, the plagiarism claim was overturned and found to have no basis. This is a completely different story, though.

Absolutely incorrect. Madonna claims credit where it's due and is careful to give credit where it's due. See my Tony Shimkin example earlier.
Casey did not sign away his publishing rights. He was offered a $25K advance, which Madonna's team felt was an appropriate projection of the income that his 15% publishing royalties would earn in time. If it earns more, he'll receive more money. If it doesn't, he'll end up in front. He agreed that his contribution amounts to 15% of the final product (which suggests that the verse he has uploaded is his only contribution in terms of lyrics and melody - he said he changed the melody for the last two lines). What he has now decided is that he should receive a larger advance, based on the use of "God Control" in the MX Tour. He will still receive royalties every time GC is performed live on this tour (so he's getting what he is entitled to). Madonna's team has offered him a fair deal (i.e. publishing and songwriting credit - 15% - plus an advance on projected income from the track, which they don't actually have to do, since most songwriting contributors are paid royalties in retrospect, rather than in advance). He wants more money in advance. Of course, none of this will be reported by the press, because it doesn't serve what seems to be everyone's purpose of painting Madonna in a bad light.
Casey knows how all of this works. He also knows full well that mentioning Madonna's name will garner attention.

It will be for sure. It's the first time someone well known has claimed that Madonna has ripped a song off from them, so it's going to generate interest, unfortunately. Mirwais was foolish to do what he did and Madonna will not be happy with him. Her naysayers will have a field day. Connor knows exactly what he's doing by focusing on Madonna, even though he's been told that she wasn't aware of his involvement.

I've actually advised Casey to get in touch with Tony Shimkin, who, as we know now, was screwed over by Shep Pettibone and robbed of royalties for most of his work on "Erotica". When Madonna found out, she ensured that he was looked after (and he said that if she'd known what was happening at the time, she wouldn't have allowed it, since she's very big on ensuring that credit is given where it's due). Casey agreed that 15% was a fair representation of his input (so the demo he's posted of the first verse of the track is likely his entire contribution to the song), and by his own admission, record sales don't make anyone any money these days, so now he's decided he wants touring royalties, too. Since he's been offered full credit for his 15% contribution, he WILL receive money from the tour - but it will only amount to 0.75% of whatever the royalties paid to the songwriters involved in the 20 songs that are performed (i.e. each song will receive 5% of those royalties, and 15% of 5% = 0.75%). He's done himself no favours by taking it public.

Some AC stations are reluctant to play anything by artists considered to be hip hop. I remember many years ago, a network in Australia wouldn't play any verses that were considered rap (e.g. they edited out Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez's verse on Melanie C's "Never Be The Same Again"). That was their strict policy for many years, because they felt that their audience didn't connect with that genre.

I think it's one of the best songs she's recorded over the past decade, to be honest...! I seriously can't get enough of it! It's easily my favourite on MX and is better than all but a handful of tracks on RH, MDNA and HC.

Madonna will be ripped apart by the press for her #2 debut (in spite of the strong sales) and Bruce will be lauded, whereas if their chart positions had been reversed, Bruce would have been praised for his strong debut. For someone whose reputation was apparently "destroyed" a month ago, a #2 debut with sales that would be enough for a #1 debut in most other weeks is actually really impressive...

One thing we have to understand (myself included) when it comes to M is that everything is amplified. What's a hit for someone else, under the exact same circumstances wouldn't be a "hit" for her. It's frustrating but in the end shows just how relevant and powerful she is even at nearly 40 yrs into her career.
No doubt Madonna will be slaughtered by UK media for debuting at #2.....but if it had been Bruce, the narrative would be quite different.
Btw, I'm not suggesting in any way Bruce SHOULD be torn apart in any way.....I have nothing but respect for him and he's a legend but yeah, the way he and Madonna are treated couldn't be more like night and day.
Well said! They both deserve to be successful. I wonder whose album release date was announced first? The UK press made a big deal of the fact that RH was Madonna's first studio album in over 20 years not to reach #1, so they'll be equally as vocal (if not more so) about this one. The vitriol aimed at Madonna is sickening and grossly unfair. Interscope/Universal don't promote Madonna's work. Warners would have done more to put her out there and I very much doubt that they would have pitted her against Bruce, especially around Father's Day in the UK.

Eurovision was weeks ago - no one would be looking at the album and thinking, "Gee, I'm going to give this one a miss because I clearly remember the song she performed a month ago on TV and everyone hated it!" If Bruce had released his album next week, we would all be sitting here getting excited about the prospect of Madonna scoring yet another #1 album in the UK. Universal and Sony should have given the world the chance to put both artists at #1 in consecutive weeks, rather than setting up a chart battle which could potentially see Madonna end up at #2 around the world behind someone who has been an albums artist (as opposed to an albums/singles artist) for the past 25 years.
Bruce and Madonna appeal to vastly different demographics. Both deserve to be #1 but only one of them will be labelled a failure if they debut at #2 (hint: it's not the one who hasn't had a hit single since 1997, when an underperforming single from 1995 was used in a massive movie and became a hit after it was re-released - it's the one who everybody loves to tear apart at every opportunity). If the situation were reversed, they'd be praised for charting so highly at this stage of their career.

"Inside Out" and "Rebel Heart" weren't released before the album, though, and they're among the very best on the album. With the number of Mirwais collaborations still to come, I'd be stunned if there weren't some stellar tracks that won't be premiered until June 14th.

The purpose of the 5 differing style 'taster' songs is to maximise appeal and anticipation for the album, not necessarily to tell the full Madame X story which is what the album (and videos) will most likely do. I wish we could put this Madonna isn't interested in being commercial/selling/charts thing to bed. She IS, but she does it through her own artistic lens.

I love this! The melodies are beautiful, the harmonies are clever and so well done (Madonna was spot on when she said she thought Swae Lee had the right voice for the song) - Madonna and her collaborators have succeeded in creating a fantastic modern pop song. Maybe I'm just easily pleased, but this woman never ceases to move me and connect with me...!

Definitely freezing cold when they were filming the wedding scenes! You can see Madonna and Maluma's breath in a few scenes.
There's SO much to look at in this video! Kudos to everyone involved!!! It's spectacular!

I commented on an earlier post of Casey's on Instragram, outlining in detail what he should be entitled to, given that he has agreed that his contribution amounted to 15% of the song's publishing. Surprise, surprise, my comment was deleted and he blocked me. I guess my argument was too solid to allow it to stay up there for public viewing.
