I'm not sure if this was discussed before, but do you think Madame X has some leftovers?

It’s funny ... I think I read somewhere on the forum before Madame X was even out that there was a rumor that there was “another whole album ready to go” ... and I said at the time that it now sounds like a standard rumor every time she has an album — I heard this from MTV sources at the time of COADF, and we had the ROL Veronica Electronica project, and with RHT we *know* she had the material and wanted to release a double album ... I mean, the only time it even half came true was with Remixed & Revisited after AL.

But, to answer your question? That’s the rumor — there is more material. I take it with a grain of salt at this point.

There was that whole “#mixtape” thing from her IG stories, but who knows whether to make more out of that than it is (i.e., a hashtag and not a news release about a forthcoming project).

Did all the tracks on the white board we saw last year end up in the album or were there other songs?

And I thought M said early in the launch this was just the start music wise implying there was more to come?

I recall what you are saying, @jonski43. I could be wrong, but I think it was about the Madame X Tour — it was very confusing at the time, so who knows what it all meant. But I recall it was when the theatre tour was announced, and not all of the cities had been announced yet ... and there was a lot of negativity online about the limited nature of this venture and the “exclusivity” aspect. And she made a post that seemed like a vague attempt to assuage the people who were complaining — and I thought she said something to the effect of “it’s just the beginning...” So many took heart thinking it meant she will visit other markets (South America, at least, if not Australia) ... but then, it also felt like a lot of wishful thinking, too, because either Arthur Fogel or some other official Live Nation source was sort of all but stating that this was it, no more. (And that has since been proven untrue, as San Francisco has been added, and there are very strong rumors about an Italian city, no?) ...

Anyway. That is my recollection. Was about the tour, not the album or more music.

I don’t know about the white board question — sorry. I don’t think there were (m)any tracks listed there that we didn’t get, though.

And @madgefan, I agree with your concept of releasing some covers digitally in the gap — it would have helped a little, I think. Then again, perhaps the gap built up the thirst and the excitement, and maybe there was some benefit in that for her commercially speaking. But, as a fan, I’d enjoy having those treats officially.

Oh that sucks, thanks for info. Wish I went to one of these events too

You’re welcome — sorry for the disappointment, and sorry you missed the event. It was odd how that rolled out — M sort of announced it with that hypnotic black-and-red video loop on her IG, but the actual events didn’t happen til later — maybe a month later? And then every screen in the store was looping that black-and-red video! The events were all in one week, though — a couple times at each Apple store in my area. Not sure if it was different in other cities. It was totally free, though.

Tracy aside, I’m hopeful we will have some killer ones ahead. With the Apple Music : ReMix Crave competition...

I don’t think that was a competition. It was an Apple Labs event, which means anyone could sign up for the “class” — it was an advanced learning event where they showed you how to use the Apple software program to remix music. “Crave” just happened to be the song you got to play with.

I mean, I’m no remixer, and *I* “remixed” Crave at one of these events. (Heavy air quotes on the remixed.) I am basic AF. My remix was a complete travesty, because I didn’t know what the eff I was doing. I was there to listen to the stems of Crave — it was worth it to listen to Madonna’s isolated a cappella vocals.

I wrote a post about it a while back. We were only allowed to work with the track during the class (about an hour, I think), and (unlike other Apple Labs where you get to keep something at the end), the instructor apologized that, because Madonna is Madonna, we would not be able to take her music with us. So you couldn’t work on it later or longer. I was one of only two people who came to the event. The other guy was more interested in the software, but he was not disrespectful to M or anything.

So ... unless I missed some announcement, I don’t see any remix contest resulting in some mind-blowing remix.

A lot of them were making a fool of the one that participated because it was like a 0.5sec cameo, I honestly don’t even know what they did asked for they if they are not featured in any major scene or even backdrop, it only added drama and also bad vibes because Madonna didn’t pay them but Taylor and Iggy who used drags a few months ago did pay them...

How do we know whether they were paid?

    this is amazing!

a great insight on the artistic creation of the artwork.... interesting that the purple lips thing is nowhere to be seen so it was either scrapped early on or it was just fan fiction

Well, those lips were real ... she posted a photo on IG showing them. But if you mean the rumor about that being on the cover art ... yes, you’re right, that seems to be fan fiction. Makes me wonder what those lips were for, now that you bring that up! I had forgotten about those glittery purple lips.

So she was involved in the design of the Rainbow edition 🤣

Couldn’t that be the other side of the “I Rise” 7” vinyl? (Not that it much matters... It’s the same “design,” I suppose...)

He said we heard zero MX demos... but we’ve heard one :naughty:

Well ... but the DEMO was really from Rebel Heart recording sessions. But I see your point — that Back That Up to the Beat has been released officially as a Madame X bonus track.

Still stand by the statement, though, that all the songs recorded during the Madame X recording sessions were spared the fate of almost all RH songs (except Ghosttown?). Back That Up was recorded earlier, and that’s why it suffers from the RH curse.

Point taken however there are instances where she backtracked and went and changed final versions of her own works to release something new. She even went on record saying her preferred version of Living For Love was a demo. People can like demos or final versions. It's this "Oh well, I prefer the final version, her TRUE VISION" holier complex some people tout that is annoying. Personally I like the production on the new one and vocals from the demo so to me, win win with two versions of the same song.

    I agree with this ...

For example, I love the demo of “Inside Out,” and I think the final version is one of my top ten faves of all time from M. (The album version did have to work to grow on me, though, because my brain had become addicted to the demo version.)

And I enjoy that we have a treasure trove of tracks that were never released. AND I can even appreciate demos that I think are inferior (Holy Water quickly comes to mind) — even if the final version isn’t my fave, it’s interesting to hear the evolution that happens through the songwriting and production processes.

With all that said, I can’t fault Madonna for being upset about how things went down in late 2014, which caused massive injury to her roll-out strategy and timeline.

  8. 13 minutes ago, dylanciccone_ said:

Agreed. You're only supposed to like album versions and not any demos. "bUt HeR ViSiOn!!?!":chuckle: It's like listen to whichever one you want and prefer. The policing of "You must only like final versions" is absurd.

My post wasn’t intended to criticize anyone’s opinions, either way. The point was that 17 of 18 Madame X tracks have no “alternate versions” to compare/contrast. “Back That Up to the Beat” is the only one that has to live in the shadow of a previous iteration.

We as fans may enjoy them (the demos), but the fact is, they weren’t meant to be heard before she released her work officially. @VogueMusic explained it well earlier. Not everyone is trying to be judgmental about it — and even the ones that are can’t stop the ones who prefer the demos from listening to them. So where’s the harm?

By the way, does she actually say "to the BEAT" at some point ?

A lot of folks seem to think not, but I was fairly certain I heard her say “beat” somewhere. I’ve only been able to listen to it maybe three times, though (because I have to have the CD in — not able to rip to .mp3 currently — will get that fixed eventually!)

I went off on my summer hols a few weeks ago and the place was jumping. Came back yesterday, only 6 weeks after the release of Madonna's latest album, and the place is dead.

What gives? Is Madame X really THAT bad?

You went on holiday?!  Where did you go? Hope you had a wonderful time!!  😎  😊

Remember Madonna has never been politically correct in her wording. Also, old man is a universal figure here. He could be the king who ordered to bring slaves from Africa, he could be the church leader who ordered to forbid Batuka music. Also, Madonna believes in fixing the world with love, not tyranny! Hence she sings “and if we can stop it all, in the right way, will we stand together?...” So even if she did mean Trump, her goal is not to actually put him in jail. That ain’t gonna happen. She’s trying to shine the light on how criminals in power get away with oppression and hate century after century, be it Kings or church leaders or presidents.

No offense to your friend, but again, why do people always nitpick everything Madonna says or does? She’s an artist, not a president.

Anyways, to me personally “get that old man” is my favorite part in the song ☺️

I think the lyric is: “Will we taste our freedom in the right way? Will we stand together?”

Don’t disagree with what you’re saying, though. It is a universal figure she refers to with the “old man” image. But that’s why I think it represents a universal concept, of which there are many specific examples.

Also, there’s a concept in Christianity of the “old Adam” and the “new creation” — the old Adam is the sinner, which is “drowned” in the waters of baptism. The emerging person has experienced a rebirth ... so, applying this concept to her lyrics here, she could mean to contain and control the old sinful person inside of us and embrace the new person who cares for others in the community and takes responsibility for their own action (tastes freedom in the right way). Some may think that is off-the-wall, I know, especially since historical slavery was clearly oppression from outside (evil) forces. But Madonna, in Dark Ballet, talks about “the storm” being “inside of us,” too ... and she talks about there being “a storm ahead” in Batuka. So I think it’s possible to have an “internalized” interpretation, too ... ? If you know what I mean ... That we all, individually, have to choose to exercise our freedoms carefully and responsibly, with love for our neighbors. And she may mean that we have a selfish “old man” (ego?) inside that we have to overcome in order to pursue nobler dreams.

Just another thought. Hope it deepens and broadens appreciation — I don’t mean to suggest this possible interpretation to the exclusion of the more obvious and literal possibilities.

@peter Well, if the translation of the Japanese lyrics back into English is only half as interesting as that funny Hungarian interview James and Andrea re-enacted on British television, then I‘m all for it. 😃

Different artwork aside, I can't figure this out either. In today's streaming and digital world, most people would be able to get all of the tracks from the deluxe edition, so are there really some markets where people only listen to CDs and only have access to the standard version? I notice it was the version I received with my ticket purchase and it feels very basic.

On a side note, I really wish there were official lyrics available somewhere. I remember getting an official version of the lyrics for Rebel Heart from the Japanese version (I think?)

@Priceless I agree! Would love to have the official lyrics somewhere. This time around, the Japanese edition “only“ has the Japanese lyrics.

Would be interesting to see someone’s translation of the Japanese lyric sheet! Just for curiosity’s sake. Imagine how something sung in Portuguese, then translated to Japanese, and then translated to English could change!

So I showed the video to my best friend at the weekend and she really loved it, except for one line in the song (which is one of my favorite ones): Get that old man. Put him into jail. She thought that these statements kind of mimic the way Trump and his supporters speak and that, given the large fanbase M has, she should know better and not sink to their level and reduce her powerful voice to such poor "hate speech".

Of course, I wholeheartedly disagreed and told her that there are indeed many "old men" who are very criminal and simply deserve to be put into jail for violating human rights. Well, she said that there still is freedom of speech in the US, so strictly speaking Trump's not a criminal. Needless to say we couldn't come to an agreement - lol.

    What do YOU think??

PS: I think the fact that we were having this kind of conversation because of Madonna is great and a testament to her power and relevance!

Didn’t see this post at first @alquemist — I answered others in my post above. Thought you might be interested in it, as well...

As for the "old man" line, Trump's only 12 years or so older than M- would she really be calling him "old"? 😋

    38 minutes ago, tasteinmen said:

I felt she calls him "old man" as a way of pointing out he doesn't get told to retire and give up because of his age, because he's a man. Where as she gets it all the time.

In her NY Times interview, I believe she shook her head when the interviewer asked if it was a Trump reference. And M indicated there are a lot of corrupt leaders out there it could refer to.

Maybe it was the British Vogue — but it was one of the early major features.

Personally, after hearing the song (and even more so after seeing the video), I think it is a poetic reference to “the patriarchy” (a metaphor).

But that’s just my interpretation. And of course I’m sure M would say Trump reinforces the patriarchal worldview.

Sorry! 😞 Hope it is more widely available soon.

I looked at refinery29’s website, and at the top you can change the country, but the only options are Canada, UK, Germany, and France (other than the US). I don’t know if the Madonna feature are available in all of those countries, either.

I’m sure she will make it available on her own channels within 24 hours...

The refinery article is a perfect way to attempt to quell any SJW outrage. She clearly loves these women and also knows her association with anything brings outrage.

Absolutely — the necessary strategy there should work. Where it doesn’t work, it’s because of willful ignorance and fake outrage intended to increase deep-seated hatred of Madonna.

She really spoke eloquently and respectfully — you can tell she is humble, grateful, and admires these women.

  18. Also, so happy to have Batuka, God Control, I Rise, and (especially for me) COME ALIVE confirmed on the setlist, with the butkadeiras as her choir...

Still keeping my fingers crossed for RESCUE ME, as well. She may not have been certain about that when she did the interview with refinery29.

is she paying the families of the artists she mentions in Funana  like the celebrities rap  in vogue ? or this fee only applies when u sing it live ? if they charge , maybe she skipped MJ cuz of their  pricing charges f using MJ name
i LOOOVE this song ( : so mucho

She did not have to pay for including the names of the stars in Vogue. Perhaps you are recalling the dispute that arose surrounding one of the estates (Marlon Brando, I believe) that agreed for the IMAGE to be used in the Super Bowl montage. The same visuals were to be used in the MDNAT, and apparently the estate wanted to be paid a higher fee. (This isn’t entirely uncommon; usage has to be disclosed/defined when securing image rights, and the estates of artists are often involved and given opportunity to approve the use in context, etc.) However, it seems silly that they would grant rights for a large telecast and then be uncooperative for the re-use of the same visual on tour, repeatedly. Arguably, the audience impression would be lower than the Super Bowl audience, but I digress...

Anyway, it became a controversy because she continued to use the image, even though the estate hadn’t technically given approval for that. I believe they took legal action and were compensated eventually, because I don’t believe she removed the photo.

But the payment was not connected to the names sung in the song.
