I love your story SomeGirls! Although I had FAR less to "discover" when I first got into Madonna, I do remember that amazing time of getting to know ALL of her music and I wish I could relive it! :( Nobody does pop better than M.

I HIGHLY recommend you give the first album a listen. To me, that is her best album of the 80's (and that includes LAP).

I don't remember his exact quote, but to me NTP meant not necessarily promoting the album and singles but her and her "brand" and THAT they did. The only thing remotely "floptastic" about this era are the single performances. Despite it's unpopularity, GMAYL wasn't a total bomb either. Assessing it's performance around the world, it was definitely a moderate hit at the worst. YES markm.....I know it was the biggest most awful piece of music ever forced onto the UK public and it performed accordingly. ;)/> But it wasn't a massive flop everywhere by any means. No, I'm not using that as justification for it being the best choice as lead single, just bringing perspective to the situation since so many things seem to be taken out of context regarding that song and the performance of the album in general.

I do find it interesting that Beyonce is following Madonna's footsteps to the tee in regards to her SB performance then the tour announcement. Even more interesting that (if I'm not mistaken) she's not promoting anything with this tour. No singles, no album, just BEYONCE the performer. Apparently, she's doing quite well too. To me, this is just another example of how the industry is gravitating toward promoting their artists on the strength of live performance vs. the traditional release a single, promote, release the album, go on tour months later. So....question is......what kind of MELTDOWN would ensue if Madonna did this?? I mean, just deciding to tour with nothing to promote. I definitely see something like this in her and a lot of other artists future as album sales and traditional methods of promo become more and more useless.

EDIT: Ok...so I should've looked more thoroughly before posting, but apparently B does have an album coming out this year. Still, though....like Madonna and the past couple tours, it seems like she is approaching this in a way that the tour is the centerpiece of the "era" vs. the album. The tour starts in April and the album doesn't even have a title or release date yet from what I gather so....very NTP-ish!

What bad news?

FUCK the Grammy's!

Madonna is a Queen and doesn't need acclaim from anybody! Those award shows are a joke nowadays and although it's nice to win an award, nothing spells success like a worldwide massive tour that is the most incredible show on Earth and to the defense of MDNA which everyone says is rushed and it's not "her best," the tour focuses heavily on the record and so it really is a testament that the album is pretty amazing!

AMEN! Granted I'll be the first one in here cheering if she gets a nom but really, it means shit. Madonna recently said:

"The tour has a lot of story, not to be missed. It's the first time I do something of this nature, where I mix the theme of my album with the story of my music."

So basically MDNA album is like the soundtrack to the show. I just think of the album/tour as one package really.

I can agree M is better than the singles from the album and I can agree that it would've been interesting from an artistic standpoint to see her go a "non traditional" route for the single choices instead choosing the most obvious potential "radio hits". It seems like some here are saying that those songs would've made MDNA more commercially successful and I just don't think that's the case. Having a bad ass video for GB and a trippy one for IA or an epic one for LS would've upped her "cool" factor for some I suppose, but obviously radio airplay is an integral part of having hit singles that will increase album sales and I'm not so sure any of the more "non traditional" single songs on the album would've done that either.

So I would have gone

Masterpiece (Soundtrack single)
Girl Gone Wild
Gang Bang
I'm Addicted
Love Spent

It would have been quite okay to not have a new song at the Superbowl, she could have just launched the new single in that same week and with the radio push and all the buzz everyone would have heard it anyway.

I like that! I still think she could've done GMAYL at the Super Bowl though, even if it wasn't an upcoming single. Clearly it was at least partially made with SB in mind. Somehow that song really does work live both in SB and on MDNA tour. Even better if despite GMAYL not being a single, she went ahead and still filmed that video for it and released it the week before the SB. In my ideal scenario Masterpiece would've already come and gone by this point, GGW would have already been released to itunes shortly before, the GGW video would premiere the week after the SB and the album itself would've dropped that week as well. Madonna overload?? Probably for the general public but would've been heavenly for us! :)
