His GAP ads are fucking cool too. GAP did well on trying to get back into the world of TV advertising. well done.

MADONNA must work with him again!

I would love if she worked with him again. I know that MTV isn't what it used to be, but nowadays YouTube streaming counts towards Billboard so I think that is another reason (besides doing it for the fans) why she should focus more on videos again.

It would be cool if she used directors she hasn't worked with before as well. I wouldn't mind Sofia Coppola, especially since she was in the DAD video.

Who would you like her to collaborate with on future music videos?

What?! Where was she in the video?

I'd like to see Madonna work with Michel Gondry (if he still does videos) and Melina, who seems to know how to get the most out of a small budget (We Found Love, Losing You, Pretty Hurts etc)

She's the girl with the long brown hair. She appears at 0:21 the first time

I can't believe she hasn't worked with Michel Gondry. I googled a bit and it seems like he isn't a fan of Madonna :(

Michel Gondry has made some of the most indelible music videos of all time for some of the biggest acts of the last two decades, including Radiohead, Björk, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, Beck and even Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones. So when Movieline caught up with him today to discuss his forthcoming documentary Thorn in the Heart, it seemed a great opportunity to feel him out on the new vanguard of the form: Lady Gaga, whose epic "Telephone" video has swept popular culture with a fury, frenzy and inspiration not seen since the glory days of which Gondry himself was a part. His response -- which swept through genre monoliths from Michael Jackson to Madonna to Marilyn Manson -- was unexpected to say the least.

"I'm not interested," he said. "To me it's like a form of Marilyn Manson. It's hard for me to talk about it; I've seen a couple of videos of hers, and not for very long. I stop watching them each time because I don't think there's melodies. I'm sorry to be negative. Like I'm not a big fan of Madonna. I respect her very much, but unfortunately the videos didn't help the music in the long run. Well, I guess it helped it to survive to the point where the video was irrelevant. So music has to find its own way, which is good for the music. It becomes smaller and more alive and it's not as crazy, except for some R&B. To me, it's just talking about the surface. I compare it to Marilyn Manson. The music to me is very expected. I don't think there's anything in the tone or the melody that makes me say, 'Oh, there's something going on.'

But then he chose LAP as one of his all-time favorite videos?

Madonna, ''Like a Prayer'' (1989)

''I'm not a big fan of Madonna,'' Gondry admits. Still, he thinks the story in this controversial clip, directed by frequent Madge collaborator Mary Lambert, ''felt genuine. It was a good take on racial problems. And she was pretty amazing-looking with her [dark brown] hair. At the end, the choir of religious people is all cliché. But it's effective.''

I guess he prefers BrunetteDonna!

Btw I found this list of music videos/directors on Mubi, and Madonna is mentioned

https://mubi.com/lists/music-video-a-forgotten-art

Here's the commentary for Bedtime Story:

In the synopsis written in the Mubi page of this video we can read:

“Madonna said in an 1999 interview with Aperture magazine interesting insight into the video: “My ‘Bedtime Story’ video was completely inspired by all the female surrealist painters like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. There’s that one shot where my hands are up in the air and stars are spinning around me. And me flying through the hallway with my hair trailing behind me, the birds flying out of my open robe – all of those images are an homage to female surrealist painters; there’s a little bit of Frida Kahlo in there, too.”

The reference to the female surrealist artists is totally legitimate, however, the MOST OBVIOUS source of inspiration which is not mentioned here and has never been anywhere else by Madonna or Mark Romanek (i was curious enough to research interviews, articles and “making-of” features), happens to be “PARAJANOV’S “COLOR OF POMEGRANATES” and “TARKOVSKY’S “STALKER”.

In my opinion, the video doesn’t loose it’s strength or value while acknowledging these facts, but it is a shame nevertheless, that their names were kept in the shadow rather then willingly shared as to set a good example of the crossover between what’s called "High art "and “Pop art” (whatever that might be…)

Then, it is not by chance that the video has been chosen to be screened in 2005 in contemporary art galleries (including the Museum of Modern Art, where it is stored in the permanent collection along with another video directed by Romanek for the Nine Inch Nails song “Closer”). It was later acquired for the New York Museum of Modern Art’s film and video collection.

these are the stills from the films that can be compared with the video:

Stills from Parajanov’s “Sayat Nova” a.k.a. “The Color of Pomegranates”…

Now I knew about that Pomegranate one but I didn't realise it took from Stalker. Fabulous!

He was at her Oscars party.

Really? I didn't know!

didn't they have a relationship in the beginning of the 90s?

I have no idea, but 1-2 weeks ago I saw someone on ontd saying that she should have married Fincher, and I have been wondering about that since then.

I'm pretty sure there was some sort of romantic entanglement and when that ended, the working relationship went with it unfortunately. I love how she once said she considered herself his muse, there was still so much more they could have done together - shame.

I remember reading that his wife called Madonna a psycho.

Bad Girl was a bit after their run of videos together, maybe they reconciled by that time.

She did? Wtf. She was probably jealous.

There are hundreds of new talented directors for her to work with , she chooses mostly her friends or gardeners

Just like the return of Meisel for VF and the LV adverts

They wont manage to do something as iconic as their previous work , too much pressure and the whole fact that M likes to move on

Which implied affair to me, or Madonna was stalking him or something.

:demonic:

Do you really think Madonna would stalk him? Or anyone for that matter? :madgemanson:

Fincher's wife was probably jealous of Madonna's pussy powers, and was scared of the fact that she could never match them.

Well no, but she could be in the sense of leaving lots of calls and stuff. Vanilla Ice complained that she called him in the middle of the night. :lmao:

As for her being his muse, you can kinda see it in the female characters of his movies like the fabulous Marla from Fight Club.

She also once complained to a photographer (Rankin?) that she didn't like working with new people - then again, who does. So that may explain the recurring set of people she's used before.

It was a shame she didn't work more with Matthew Rolston, they never clicked.
