A Connecticut woman was arrested after authorities found 26 cats, six dogs, two caged squirrels and a blind owl in her Hamden home.

Donna Scirocco was also sharing her residence with the corpses of two cats and a woodchuck in her home, in the town north of New Haven. She turned herself in Tuesday in response to an arrest warrant charging her with a half-dozen counts of animal cruelty.

Animal control officials reportedly became aware of Scirocco’s living situation on Oct. 26 when they got a search warrant for the home following complaints of rats in the neighborhood and a stench emanating from the house. The 59-year-old woman also had two rats living in her home, investigators said. They allege the animals had all been neglected or mistreated.

The animals were all taken to a veterinarian and some had to be euthanized. Others were brought to area shelters. Scirocco was freed on $5,000 bond and will be in court Feb. 5. The property has been condemned.
