Brexit / British politics thread 🤡

The English hardly do revolt. They just keep calm and carry the fuck on. Preferably with a pint of booze in the hand.

God Save the Queen :chuckle:

Isn't it telling that half of the British population wanted out of the EU and half of it didn't at all. Just like half of the British population love their pampered pilfering "Constitutional Monarchy" system and the other half would love to tear the Royals down in favour of a Republic.

The irony and parallels. Truth is some people live on a fantasy planet of their own creation while not realising we are living through a con most of the time

I wish you knew enough about it too. Because what is happening right now in the world everywhere is nothing to make jokes about. We're slowly but steadfastly tiptoeing into WW3 and permanent economic collapse, not sure what would come first, followed by a 1984 Orwellian style global political system

Unless one means joke as laughing at the idiocy of the puppets the powers that be utilise to implement their own agenda. People like Boris Johnson fit the role perfectly. But yes, cheer on son, with this new immigration point system "we got rid of the Polish builder"

But Boris Johnson's attitude and "ideas" coupled with that fake debonair and culturedness of his worry me infinitely more. His sister Rachel luckily, a gem from another planet

Exactly what I mean. Rampant xenophobia, mental health crises, the shift to the right, the social media divide, sublimating climate change, soaring costs of living and wealth inequality on a global scale - and Chile, Venezuela, and Hong Kong have already started violently. Yemen is being decimated. Revolutions and wars have started over less.

I don't see this going any other way but a breaking point, with major bloodshed. It's in the air - we all feel it.

It's disgusting that the BBC not only airs these views, but then feels it is right to tweet it to even amplify it further.

The BBC's remit is to be impartial and therefore air a variety of opinions. That's democracy.

In the late nineties, from what I've read, Labour changed our immigration laws and the numbers coming into this country increased massively. We're one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the consequence is that public services are stretched. We never used to have to wait three weeks to get a doctor's appointment but now it's the norm. And it's the poorer areas that suffer the most.

Successive governments have ended up admitting they don't know how many immigrants there are here.

Unfortunately, for years, the Labour party just branded anyone racist who questioned immigration. Now they've actually realised that they should have listened because their voters have deserted them for the Tories.

Wanting a cap on immigration isn't necessarily racist. Yes, there will be the racist element there but you average person just wants a balance so our public services aren't overwhelmed.

Sharing racism is not being impartial. It's elevating hate and fake data  to the same level as really intelligent and congruent opinions.

BBC should know better. But of course Johnson is a xenophobic useless mam so I guess they're obeying his orders.. If they want to live in a fake world where everyone is white and all foreigners are rich they're up to a very big disappointment. They'll end up with overwhelming illegal and uncontrolled migrants and rich mafia.

immigration is one of the most productive ways to help economy. These people in government are absolute morons. What counties need are good salaries and laws against exploitation. Because in Europe we are OLD and we don't have enough children and young people to substain our system. So hello to being a dry raising society where all play bingo.

Oh by the way... Yesterday the Spanish police found an illegal tobacco factory where citizens from East Europe where enslaved and of the verge of suffocation. The owners? Two UK citizens. But of course East citizens are the worst for that stupid racist woman.

Every country has its criminals. That's not the argument.

The question is, in a democracy, do you give people a voice even if you don't like what they say? If you only allow people on TV who voice the opinions you want to hear, that's censorship and not democratic. This was the problem with the Brexit in the first place. They asked the question thinking we'd say no to leaving.

The biggest problem we face is getting the facts out and stopping the spread of lies so that people like this woman are better informed. The Tory party recently posted a heavily edited video that portrayed a Labour MP incorrectly and changed their Twitter account to look like a fact checking service. These tactics are scary.

How can the BBC retweet this????????

I told you ages ago this was the route the BBC was going down. You’re absolutely right that this unfettered racism should be called out by any civilised society rather than the state broadcaster normalising it in the interest of “balance”. There's no room for balance when it comes to racism, climate change denial etc.

The BBC's response to the 'post truth' world has been nothing short of abysmal and will come back to bite it when/if (as rumoured) Johnson and Cummings set about dismantling the whole institution in the next few years in favour of a subscription service thus allowing Fox News type replacements to creep in. Those who once would have fought for the BBC (on both the moderate left and right) are increasingly relinquishing it...

On and just for the avoidance of doubt, the fact is that immigrants contribute MORE financially to the UK economy than they take out, and always have.

Public services have been decimated because the Tories introduced massive AUSTERITY measures that have lasted over a decade and hit the poorest the hardest. 10 years of frontline services being cut to the bone.

And who did they (in conjunction with their media chums) set up as the fall guy? Well, take a guess...

As evidenced by this endless tirade of  filth....and the army of dog whistle racists it's unleashed...

No.

You don't give a voice, for example, to people who say that women should be beaten. Or somebody who says that gays are ill. Enough with the absurdity. That is called hateful speech and it's against the law. To be honest, it even violates Twitter rules and they should suspend the BBC.

Twitter Spain suspended the extreme right party of Spain account because of a tweet against gays. It's still suspended because the party refuses to delete the tweet and claim they have the right of speech. Well, KUDOS for Twitter Spain.

Great post Kim.

Btw Scotland is funding a beautiful campaign in social media WELCOMING migrants. Such a great example on how not all politicians are the same and how important is to vote and support great leaders.

Grave concern in North over London’s new immigration rules

Parties and business united in opposition to points-based system and salary threshold

The North’s five main parties are to raise concerns about the United Kingdom’s new points-based immigration system with the British government amid fears the scheme could jeopardise the North’s economy.

Sinn Féin said the proposals were “unpopular, unworkable and a direct threat to the North’s economic viability”.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said the new rules represented a “fundamental threat to the North’s economy and the effective provision of public services”.

And DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson said his party would ask the UK government to reduce the salary threshold for skilled migrant workers who wanted to come to Northern Ireland.

Under the new, points-based immigration system, unveiled by London on Wednesday, skilled migrants with a job offer must meet a minimum salary threshold of £25,600 (€30,630).

Mr Donaldson said a “key ask” would be “that we get some form of regional variation on the salary threshold to recognise the high dependence of Northern Ireland on the agrifood sector”.

This lower threshold, he suggested, could be about £22,000 (€26,300).

Agree with you both Kim and Karbatal. It is terrifying how right wing, racist,, sexist, homophobic, climate change deniers etc are now dominating so much of the media. As for giving racist, misogynist, anti science etc people the right to say anything and applaud their rights to discriminate in the name of free speech - no matter how incorrect and  hateful it is - it is incredibly dangerous and frightening.

A year

Which is not as low as some people think. Most journalism job offers in London are for about 22.000 pounds brutto a year. Nurses get like 23.000.  Which shows how incredibly LOW are wages. Wages that have been almost frozen for 20 years. This situation is the core of Brexit. People are POORER than before and tricky press and government have blamed migrants and the EU.

The same is happening everywhere. We are all much more poorer than 20 years ago. Our salaries are lower in comparison while houses, transport, food and commodities are much more expensive. In every country there's a current opinion to blame some group or some institution. I think that's why extreme right, separatism and xenophobia are rampant.

Wage stagnation is dreadful. Multi million dollar corporations and conservative governments are doing everything in their power to stop wage increases despite the ever growing cost of living.  Helped by the right wing media.  We have the exact same problem in Australia.

Precisely

And the past 11 years of AUSTERITY policies have done nothing but worsen the situation. What have they achieved with all the extreme cuts?? A big fat nothing.

Back in 2008-2009 they have shamelessly dipped into taxpayers' pockets to bail out the banking system and now we're back to square one with the finance sector, meanwhile they have deliberately allowed THE REAL ECONOMY to go down the drain

Boris Johnson has “full confidence” in the ability of Priti Patel, the home secretary, his official spokesman has said.

However, he declined to offer the same level of support for Philip Rutnam, the top civil servant at the Home Office, with the spokesman saying only that the prime minister has “full confidence in the civil service”.

He also said claims that Patel was not being fully briefed on intelligence documents because MI5 did not trust her were “baseless and wrong”. But there will be no leak inquiry into the bitter media war that has taken place between Patel and Rutnam in recent days.

Earlier, one of Patel’s Home Office ministerial colleagues dismissed claims that she had been bullying officials, as the home secretary pushed for an inquiry into a series of damaging leaks about her approach in the department.

After the Home Office released a statement denying a rift between Patel and her most senior civil servant, and MI5 rejected reports it is witholding intelligence from her, James Brokenshire called the reports “absolute nonsense”.

Patel’s team has said she is “absolutely livid” about the allegations and has demanded an investigation into the leaks to be carried out by the Cabinet Office. However, it is not clear whether a formal request has yet been made.
