TMI: Nearly half of Americans don’t change underwear daily, new survey says

These skivvies are skeevy.

Nearly half of Americans have worn the same pair of underwear for two or more days, according to a survey by apparel maker Tommy John.

Out of 1,000 people responding to an informal poll conducted by the underwear maker, 45% admitted they had worn the same pair of undies for two or more days, with 13% saying they had worn the same pair for a week or more, Tommy John said.

“Conventional wisdom — and basic common sense — tells us that we should change our underwear every day, or at least wash them after every wear,” Tommy John said in its statement announcing the results. “But how many people actually follow this golden rule? After surveying 1,000 Americans, we found that this basic standard of underwear hygiene is definitely not universal.”

In a finding that did not surprise the company, Tommy John said men were 2.5 times as likely as women to wear unwashed underwear for a week or more. That’s 20% of men versus 8% of women.

Though perhaps not aesthetically pleasing, going a day or two with the same pair is not a health deal breaker, NYU microbiology and pathology professor Philip Tierno told Huffington Post last year. But he advised against wearing the same skivvies consecutively for longer than that.

The Tommy John survey also covered underwear replacement and found that 46% of respondents don’t follow the pervasive wisdom that recommends swapping out old for new every six months to a year. Not only that, but 38% of respondents did not know how long they’d had their underwear. Men and women scored equally on this one, Tommy John said.

Even that is not carved in stone, Tierno said.

“As long as they function properly and you wash them and the elastic is fine, and they fit fine, there’s no holes or fabric erosion, you can use them,” Tierno told HuffPo last year. “There’s no end period, except when it’s mechanically dysfunctional.”

Overall, because underwear sits next to skin containing E. coli despite our best efforts, and because washing it never kills all that bacteria, there is always going to be something there.

“We are bathed, as a society, in feces,” Tierno said. “But it’s normal, and it doesn’t hurt you.”

Not surprised tbqh

Just like when you see a guy training and sweating hard at gym, but leaving before shower. That's disgusting. :provoke:
And don't tell me he's going to shower when he'll be home. I don't believe it for a second.

I follow Powerfit and Bootcamp classes (so classes where you sweat your life) on my lunch breaks. In my classes, there is the perfect little young gay of 25 y.o. : beautiful, perfectly dressed, athletic, aware that he catches the eye. One in two classes, he does not take a shower after class and goes back to work (we work in the same building, so I know he's going back at his office). Disgusting. :noway:Seriously, I would never not take a shower after the gym, even if it was only a yoga class. NEVER.

And they’ll re-wear the same gym clothes the next time without cleaning them!

I absolutely do NOT wear the same underwear every day. I sleep naked and will put on same underwear from day before to do workouts, then shower and put new underwear on. If I do other activity through the day that gets me sweaty, I'll take another shower and change underwear again! Just sayin....lol.

At my old gym, I saw several guys get into the mixed spa jacuzzi wearing their underwear that they'd worked out in.

Does it matter though? I mean i clean them but have occasionally reworn clothes. Youre just sweating again at the gym.

Misleading conclusion. It's not the same saying nearly half of America doesn't change underwear daily than saying nearly half of America has worn the same underwear two days in a row once.

If they were drenched in sweat when they left and weren’t cleaned when reworn they will stink by then! At my gym some people leave their clothes for days in their lockers and I see staff spraying Febreze into those lockers because of the strong odors. :gross:

Same! I’m totally grossed out by gym change rooms. There is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting until you get home to take a shower.

I agree. I would never shower at a gym unless I absolutely couldn't go straight home afterwards to shower.

Nothing wrong with working out, getting in your car to drive home and then showering. I like long, private showers where I can listen to music and relax.....that wouldn't be an option in a public setting.
