Australia's shock election result

Recommended Posts

In shock over this.  Our conservative government has been returned in a result that nobody saw coming.  😞   All of the polls were wrong. The most right wing party imaginable -  racist, sexist ( so many female members left in disgust )  major climate change deniers and anti unions.  All for coal mines.   Thanks mainly to the state of Queensland that went against the rest of the states and had a huge swing toward the conservatives.  Queensland - what the hell were you doing ?   They will get their Adani coal mine as will be in Queensland and the mega rich will be free to keep enjoying low tax rates plus corporations and big business to pay hardly any tax.

O'h and of course the disgusting Clive Palmer who mainly was there to give preference to the Coalition so that the ALP would not get in because he of course does not want millionaires like himself and his mates to get taxed more. Proof of his manipulation in bolded below.   Queensland,  how could you vote for Pauline Hanson and Clive Palmer too ?   Hang your heads in shame.   Shame that a party that wanted to restore penalty rates,  bring in affordable cancer treatment for all sufferers and protect the environment have been rejected by one state especially.   As former PM John Howard gloatingly said about Queensland last night - they are people of " common sense"  -  wanting jobs (  coal mines ) over climate ideology.  Gee,  with that attitude,  it is a very very sad day for Australia.

In a statement, Mr Palmer didn't shy away from the intention of the preference arrangement.

"The goal for the United Australia Party was to ensure the Labor Government did not get into power, introducing more than $1 trillion of new taxes," Mr Palmer said.

"This has been achieved with the collective effort from United Australia Party."

Oh no... why does the world feel like a hopeless place so much?

This weekend needs to end. Too many disappointments for my taste.

I know Lolo.  Am devastated at this result.

Saw this on the news. Bloody awful. Right wing, big business, dark money funded govts taking over nearly everywhere.

Spot on Kim.  You are so right about funded dark money.  What that ghastly Clive Palmer was all about.  He is a crooked business man who could not even be bothered paying his own workers properly who campaigned like Trump and poured over $ 50 million in the election campaign.  Has admitted now it was all done to stop the Labor Party from getting power.

Yes,  you are going through this too and know all about it.  Polls are so wrong - Trump,  Brexit and now this election.  I am not joking when I say it is a result that nobody in Australia saw coming.

Sounds like exactly what happened to America.

I'm the farthest thing from a conspiracy theorist, but something is going down in this world...a fundamental shift...and it seems to be another turn to darkness before we see the dawn again. Something is off-balance in the way of the world.

Stay strong @Jazzy Jan and any other Australians here. We Americans know how you feel...it takes time to center yourself again. But you'll get there to fight another day.

I am very sad with the result. Once again people are picking money over the environment. Whats the point of having money if you fuck up the world andits destroyed and our lives are over?

I had a funny feeling we would follow the rest of the worls. Everyone say one thing in polls but vote another way. Murdoch's news Corp scare tactics and constant pro liberal party stories really helped win and stupid Clive Palmer helping libs win.

I just feel like there is a movement out there that hates the fact that people are getting equal rights and they feel that the tables have turned and the religious right and white  man are now a minority and they want the old way of life back and this is why so many extreme right wing governments are being elected.

So sad. I just hope the new  PM doesnt try and make us like the states and get too many pro religious freedom rules in.

i wouldn’t trust Scott Morrison as far as i could throw him. He abstained from voting in Parliament to approve the Same Sex Marriage Bill in 2017 while demanding the Bill include language about exceptions for ‘religious freedom’, after the public vote overwhelming supported SSM without any limitations. He was also one of the guys that consistently resisted a Royal Commission into the Banking industry and now look at all the corruption that has been disclosed from that when it did finally happen.

@jazzyjan I too am in total shock. I voted at the Australian Consulate in NY, feeling quite confident that Australia was about to get back on track after a disastrous and completely ineffective Government that has fallen over itself at every turn, but yet here we are with climate denying, anti-immigrant, religious wingnuts returned to power all for a coal mine in Queensland, a very modest tax cut for the middle class that won’t really happen for years and so that wealthy retirees will continue to not have to pay any tax AT ALL.

@swimtoshore no i don't trust him at all. I wanted him out. The religious right put him in as they knew Dutton wouldn't get the publics vote and this was with Scott they could get what they want in.

I fear a terrible mistake has been made and religious freedom act will get in. Which will make me sick.

On a positive note my electorate booted Abbott!

It has shocked everyone that I am friends and relatives with.  Even people that vote for the Coalition were fed up with how the right wing, religious fanatics, climate change deniers and sexist racist homophobic people have taken over the party.   Scott Morrison is such a wolf in sheep's clothing.  He has fully agreed and backed all of the ultra right of the party previously.  How did people not see that he did not support marriage equality,  had voted to remove penalty rates on every occasion,  never wanted a Royal Commission in the banking industry and thought coal was a wonderful thing.

Murdoch Press and Sky news is going to be intolerable.  I am so glad that I do not read the Herald Scum anymore.  With Peter Dutton,  Kevin Andrews and others still ruling the Coalition,  I would not even be surprised if they rewrite stacks of gains.  All of the moderates of the Libs have left - Turnbull, Christopher Pine,  Julie Bishop.  We are left with mostly hard line right wingers.  It is such a mess.

Really  hurts too that Labor had announced some incredible policies that might not be put on the table again for years.  Goodbye to penalty rates for hospitality workers Australia - something that the unions and the Labor party worked so hard for.  Labor was going to bring them back and said this vote was a vote for them, but now I fear they will never return.  Labor was going to also support all cancer patients and make treatment affordable for everyone -  breaks my heart as have been through so many people I love dying of cancer and seeing patients with rare forms of cancer on tv,  hoping that their expensive treatments would now be covered,  being let down.   Climate action - forget that.   Very very sad day for Australia and only good thing is Abbott going.  However,  that is like losing the grand final and celebrating one player kicking lots of goals.  The loss of this election is so painful and I feel unless the ALP gets back in next time with a huge majority,  so much Australia has gained through Whitlam, Hawke and others will be lost.

Thank God Abbott is gone - he would have to be about the most toxic politician in the history of Australian politics.

wtf is happening to this World ?? This is so wrong, 😞

And same will happen in Canada, where the Conservative party should be elected next October. True that Trudeau was definitely not the best, but at least he is more centrist  than these conservative morons.

Sorry to Queensland members but WTF ?

Queensland helps Coalition to 'miracle' victory amid Labor bloodbath

Labor has been left reeling from a bloodbath in Queensland, as the Coalition celebrated a return to government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison took a moment to thank Queensland in his victory speech in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"How good's Queensland?" he asked, to chants from the party faithful of "Queensland! Queensland! Queensland!"

"I have always believed in miracles. I'm standing with the three biggest miracles in my life, and tonight we delivered another one."

Labor lost at least two of its Queensland seats to the Coalition, leaving it with five seats amid a 4.31 per cent statewide swing against the party as of Saturday night, while the ALP was left with no representation north of Brisbane.

Senior Labor frontbencher Brendan O'Connor has blamed the party's misfortunes on heavy spending by Clive Palmer, and One Nation – which received a swing of 3.18 per cent statewide – directing preferences to the LNP.

However, the result will raise questions in Queensland Labor party headquarters about what this means for the Palaszczuk government and its handling of the Adani Carmichael coal mine, and an examination of strategies leading into the next state election in less than 18 months.

The Palaszczuk government will also need to consider what a Coalition victory means for next month's state budget, including missing out on $2.2 billion pledged by federal Labor for Cross River Rail.

As counting closed on Saturday night, the LNP had 23 seats in Queensland, Bob Katter retained Kennedy and Labor looked set to claim five. Lilley, previously held by former Labor treasurer Wayne Swan, was too close to call.

Seats in central Queensland closest to the Galilee Basin and the proposed Adani mine swung towards the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis, boosted by minor party preferences.

At the same time, Labor incumbent Cathy O'Toole, who held the Townsville division of Herbert on tiny margin of 0.02 per cent, lost to the LNP's Phillip Thompson with a 7.47 per cent swing, two-party preferred.

LNP MP George Christensen, dubbed the "member for Manila", seemed to suffer no repercussions from revelations about his frequent travel to the Philippines, winning Dawson with a 11.96 per cent two-party preferred swing.

Former prime minister John Howard said Queenslanders were "commonsense" and worried about job security.

"And when they saw a Labor Party prepared to destroy jobs in the name of climate ideology in relation to the Adani mine, they said, 'That's not for Queensland'," he told the ABC.

I am also surprised about the result. I thought that Labor had it in the bag. I suppose they did too. While Adani played a massive role in QLD I think the other policies that hurt them considerably were the proposed changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax. Also changes to franking credits for retirees. Australians have a fetish for property investment and people who I know who’ve ALWAYS voted Labor voted Liberal this election. I on the other hand voted Labor for the first time in my life as my priorities were more social / environmental than economic. I also thought Labor put forward some innovative initiatives and would’ve been more likely to pursue better longer term economic changes (rather than short term ones like the tax cuts promised by Libs.).

Yes,  negative gearing, franking credits worried the wealthy self funded retirees.  Also so many retirees from Victoria and NSW head up to Queensland to live - wanting the sun etc.   The more we learn about why Queensland voted in droves for the government and not Labor,  the more noticeable it is that it was not just them wanting the Adani mine but also the wealthy worrying about losing some of their tax breaks if Labor got in.

It was also due to downright fake news: it was spread widely just before polling that Labor had a death/inheritance tax in the works. That swayed one person I know at least, despite being false.

I also think that our preferential voting has the unintended consequence where people think they can vote Clive Palmer or Pauline Hanson as a protest of the government... and then still number the government higher than they do Labor, and blammo, government back in.

Anthony Albanese -  hope Labor's new leader can insert his presence and really take it up completely up to the government.

Have other Australians noticed how depressed and shocked so many people are ?   I don't think I have ever been as shocked and saddened about an election result in my life.

Not shocked. It will continue around the world the more the liberal side is represented by lunatics or until a new party that represents newer more effective ways arrives.

Labor in Australia were not represented by lunatics though.

The lunatics were more the right wing, anti gay, coal loving climate change deniers in the government. .  Seems people are more interested in the rich not getting taxed slightly more than the climate, human rights, the environment, health, education and decent living wages etc.  Something I thought Australia did not represent.

Ah got it; I don’t know much about Aussie politics; to be honest I generalized based on what I’ve personally seen in the us, and,    I assumed since conservatism is trending lately that it may not be for different reasons.

I identify as a free thinker. In the us, the new wave of liberal and socialism ideologies are eating the dems alive. Which are causing right wing parties to effortlessly win. I’m pretty open minded. So I can imagine how the rest of the country which is much more conservative outside nyc n ca feels.

Hopefully it’s not as circus like there as it is here lol

I don't get how ppl are voting for liberals. Don't people want a higher standard of living? We surely don't have as many millionaires living in OZ as compared to US surely..

I love Sammy J.

Here he is as "country western singer" Buster J :lmao:  with his break up song with Queensland ( over the election result )

Saw Sammy interviewed and he said he is still touring there with a new song -  Queensland, we are making up with you.   Queensland is laughing though - we always take the piss out of each other in Australia.

I agree. And I am starting to believe everything is being rigged. I actually think the polls are correct (or moreso than the results). How can this be happening so many places? I smell Putin.

She's a racist biggot and i hate her. In the 90s she hated asians. Then it was Muslims, now its the left wing and loss of freedom of speech (i.e. not being allowed to say racist and bigotry things with out repercussion).

Anyway her latest rant is about Uluru (Ayeres Rock) banning people climbing on it to respect the native owners of the land as it is a sacred site to them. She is claiming that Australians own Uluru and people should be allowed to continue walking on it.

So in her latest political stunt she set out to climb it in protest, but her stunt backfired when she freaked out after only a bit of her climb and had to sit on her bum and wiggle her way back down.

Another joke of a politician (ala trump).
