Madame X - - UK Chart/General Promo Discussion

Recommended Posts

can we just request to BBC Radio 2 on every social media we can? I don't think they will give any attention if we don't request. Medellin it's not exactly what plays on the radio now

I think we can do something more than just stream or buy

Unfortunately Madonna's days of instant top ten hits are over,as much as it pains me to say that. This is due to the fact that we live in an ageist society, who don't see acts like Madonna as "relevant to the youth market". I'd rather she released an album of top notch material and had a No1 album, than chase some trend that will be forgotten 6 months from now and had a top ten hit. At least she can take some comfort from the fact that she's had 63 top ten singles in the UK.

In terms of 2019, idk either really.....but just looking back, Frozen certainly wasn't what I'd call "radio friendly" for 1998. I wouldn't say this song is as "good" as Frozen (and a song doesn't have to be to be a hit) but I absolutely believe it's as much of a breath of fresh air that Frozen was in '98! Whole different set of rules back then though, so it had a chance to grow on people. I truly think that the potential for that to happen with this song is there but not sure if it'll come to fruition just because of the circumstances of an older act releasing in 2019 and having an uphill battle with radio airplay. Unless you're a "hot" streaming act, you have to be incredibly strategic with releases. The slightest little misstep can ruin it all. It's been said many acts release their songs a couple of days before the official start of the chart week and it actually works to their benefit. If a song is an organic hit, then I don't think it really matters what day it's released.

This is the UK thread remember , so yes Frozen was tailor made for the charts in '98. Bristol, trip hop,  massive attack, portishead etc - all huge at the time.

As for radio,  dinosaur Paul McCartney's new stuff gets added to Radio 2,  joke 80s act Bananarama has just been added to their A list. Keifer Sutherland (He SINGS???) is everywhere. Madonna is nowhere to be heard (not yet at least). This is nothing to do with an ""older act" .

Similarly, yes it does matter what day stuff is released in the UK. Two days of sales and streaming has now been totally wasted on this weeks non-chart and without a radio add date (or a radio boycott) there will now be a lull until next Wednesday at the earliest.

If radio 2 is not playing her, it is not because Madonna is old, they play alot of old artist, it is because they don't like the song. But maybe it will be add it later.

I agree with you Radio 2 aren’t ageist I just think the song doesn’t fit in with radio 2 and we know radio 1 never play Madonna anyway, personally I don’t think the song is radio friendly for radio 2

Regarding this,  I know that you said that it could be added - so hoping for that .   However,  if Madonna is NOT added today,  I would straight out that say that is is a personal vendetta against her.  Can't think of any other real reason. I don't buy the " not radio friendly"  angle really as the verses are extremely melodic and the song is incredibly catchy - especially after 3 or so listens.  To read that Bananarama (  who have not had a hit song since the 80's )  and Keifer Sutherland have been added,  this is just mind boggling.   I know I am not in the UK so maybe should not be commenting, but have followed the charts from the USA and UK for since the 80's and know that Madonna was a chart topper and dominant force until MDNA in the UK which was not played on the radio in the UK (  Just like Australia )     It is horrible thinking of the UK radio shunning her when she has been such an incredible chart performer.  Hoping this song gets added very soon as it is bizarre and wrong  that a huge decision to snub an icon of the highest order on the radio,  could cost her hit songs.

So true on every level. Contrary to what people think, I do not think she cares about chart success. What does she have to prove?

Well someone posted next weeks Radio 2 playlist in another thread and it's full of actual crap. So if she does get added it won't be until a week tomorrow which seems a complete waste. Again, Radio 2 is mostly listened to by the 35 and over demo, their specialist shows cover everything from jazz to reggae, their daytime shows are adult contemporary so we're not talking some ageist nonsense here.

There used to be a website that gave actual plays of every artist across all radio stations UK wide but I can't remember/find. it. If she doesn't get played ANYWHERE in the next few days then I' ll take that to mean they've decided not to send it to radio for whatever reason, be it waiting for the second song or whatever.

Otherwise...who knows.

Ah yes....I was being US radio-centric. Well, it's great that the UK does have a big platform that may play older artists so there's hope...if not for this single then a future one. I know it's early yet but if they don't play it, do you think it's just a case of the song maybe having too much Spanish so it doesn't fit the format?? Or do you think something else could be at play?

Well, see above. It's probably too early to tell yet but I think maybe they've decided not to send it to radio yet (or at all) I dunno.

Thanks, I see. Sorry,  I was not aware of the playlists and the need to be sent to radio (  showing up my ignorance on all this )   Just thought once it was a single to buy,  was ready to be played on the radio.  Just seems so crazy that it is not being played now but if it has not been sent to radio to play,  well can now understand why.    They should have sent it straight away to be played on radio.

No I agree with you. They update their playlist every Saturday so Madonna should be on it tomorrow (today) seeing as the song is officially out, but apparently she's not. They can still play her but not even being C-Listed means it won't get regular play. It was apparently played once on Wednesday by a DJ who likes her so they do have the song so I'm not sure what's happening. I'm just guessing that maybe it hasn't been given an official radio date, but it doesn't make much sense if so. Who knows?

She's actually doing the Q&A with radio 2 DJ, Trevor Nelson, next week!

Sarah Cox loved the song too. Perhaps we should tweet her?

And this is like the third week for Bananarama! Kiefer Sutherland actually came in to radio 2 so that may have helped.

Perhaps they're hanging off until she comes in later for Graham Norton?

Hopefully Madame X will hit no 1 on UK chart and become her 13 th no 1 album breaking record for the most no. 1 albums for solo female act.

She already has that record.

The record she's lost was most number ones by a solo artist after Elvis beat her but I am confident she will get it back with Madame X.

If she's doing a Q & A with BBC Radio 2, they're DEFINITELY gonna add her to their airplay list.

That's always how it works

Good news

The Q&A is not at radio 2 but with one of their djs at MTV.

49 in the sales chart with only two days of sales (when everyone else has had a full week) isn't bad at all. I don't really understand why people premier songs on Wednesday/Thursdays sometimes, surely it just looses a bunch of initial interest and sales that could bump it up higher if it had a full week to accumulate sales and streams . Either way I'm not expecting any 'hit' singles this era just hoping the album hit's no.1

@Kim are you talking about CompareMyRadio? I just googled it but it goes to a dead page, so not sure if the website is even functioning anymore.

Could be, sounds familiar. That's a pity if it's no more, it was a good resource.

Graham Norton just played her on radio 2!!! Fingers crossed she'll get more spins with djs who like her.

He also said the album pic was beautiful and mentioned Eurovision!

He always narrates the Eurovision and he's a huge M fan so we can expect exceptional narrating following her performance for the audience to enjoy, they'll be no insults just heaps of praise.
