Migrant rescue ship rejected by Italy invited to dock in Spain

Recommended Posts

This is happening right now. Italian governement refused to accept a boat that had rescued migrants in the Mediterranean, who were about the get drowned. almost 700 people, many of them children and pregnant women. And Spain has offered a safe port to take care of the tripulation.

Really, for those out there who think that voting doesn't matter, i give you a big FUCK YOU. Your vote given to stupid CUNTS who deny suffering migrants to land makes you accomplices of the same situation. Understood?????? And if you vote to have a government that shows sensitivity towards suffering people, you will show your humanity.

This is the news. From The Guardian.

Migrant rescue ship rejected by Italy invited to dock in Spain

Pedro Sánchez says Spain will welcome the 629 migrants onboard MS Aquarius

Spain’s new prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has given permission for the stranded migrant rescue vessel MS Aquarius to dock in Valencia, and said his country will welcome those onboard.

The humanitarian ship, which is carrying more than 600 migrants rescued off the coast of Libya at the weekend, was turned away by Italy after Matteo Salvini, the head of the far-right League party, blocked it from docking and said it should go to Malta instead. Malta refused, saying it had nothing to do with the rescue mission, which was overseen by the Italian coastguard.

A statement from Sánchez’s office said on Monday: “The prime minister has given instructions so that Spain can fulfil its international humanitarian crisis commitments and has announced that the Aquarius will be welcomed into a Spanish port.

“It is our duty to help avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe harbour to these people in accordance with international law.”

Italy and Malta thanked Spain’s new Socialist prime minister for the offer to receive the rescue ship Aquarius at the port of Valencia. But it was not immediately clear if such a voyage was feasible given the distances involved. The ship is more than 1,400km (750 nautical miles) from Valencia. The Aquarius said it had not yet received instructions to head to Spain.

Earlier, the UN’s refugee agency had called for the 629 migrants onboard, including more than 100 children, to be allowed to disembark urgently.

“People are in distress, are running out of provisions and need help quickly. Broader issues such as who has responsibility and how these responsibilities can best be shared between states should be looked at later,” said Vincent Cochetel, the UNHCR’s special envoy for the central Mediterranean.

The European commission, anxious to avoid feeding the new Italian government’s anti-EU narrative, took a softer line, calling on Italy and Malta to consider the humanitarian needs of those onboard but insisting the matter was outside its control.

“Enough!” Salvini said Monday. “Saving lives is a duty, but transforming Italy into an enormous refugee camp isn’t.”

On Sunday, Salvini said all Italian ports were closed to Aquarius. “Malta takes in nobody. France pushes people back at the border, Spain defends its frontier with weapons. From today, Italy will also start to say no to human trafficking, no to the business of illegal immigration,” he wrote on Facebook.

He said the route took the boat past Malta, and the boat should dock in the capital, Valletta. But Malta rejected the request, saying international law required that the migrants should be taken to Italian ports.

Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, thanked Spain on Twitter for offering to take in the Aquarius “after Italy broke international rules and caused a standoff”. He said his country would be “sending fresh supplies to the vessel. We will have to sit down and discuss how to prevent this from happening again. This is a European issue.”

Mayors across the south of Italy had pledged to defy Salvini’s move on Sunday. Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of Palermo, said he was ready to open the city’s seaport to the ship.

“We have always welcomed rescue boats and vessels who saved lives at sea. We will not stop now,” Orlando said. “Salvini is violating the international law. He has once again shown that we are under an extreme far-right government.’’

But a representative of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which has staff on the boat, said the mayors’ remarks were “nice but not practical” because it was standard practice to wait for the Italian coastguard, which is under the control of the Italian government, to allow a ship to dock.

More than 600,000 people have reached Italy by boat from Africa in the past five years, and it is estimated as many as 500,000 are still in the country. Salvini’s League, formerly the Northern League, campaigned in the last election on an anti-immigration platform, even though the previous government had overseen a big drop in the numbers coming from Libya over the past 12 months.

The humanitarian group SOS Méditerranée, which operates the Aquarius, said the migrants on board, who are mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, were picked up in six different rescue operations off the coast of Libya and included hundreds rescued from the sea by Italian naval units.

I am just blown away at the govt Italy has now. WTF is wrong with Italy? (same can be said for the USA and others). We are getting these far-right govts due to immigration. We need to find a solution to take this off the table. People are losing their minds over it.

I'm not sure, though, why these migrants, many of them muslim, wouldn't want to find refuge in another muslim country? They face hostility and intense hate in many Western countries.

I can understand if people are afraid of migration, I can even understand if they ask their governments for harder measures to avoid migration. That is part of human nature, to defend your commodity, even though others are having a rough time. Ok, we got it. But not to accept ships being rescued????

This has nothing to do with the new government of Italy, this is part of the EU policy, to avoid the arrival of refugees and migrants. First they bribed Turkey. Then mafias moved and now migrants have to move from Turkey to Libia, where they are embarked into THIN AND CLUMSY little ships. Migrants have to spend so much money to do that trip. Money saved FOR YEARS AND YEARS. And when they get to Libia, they are lied. They are told "do you see those lights? That is Italy". Which is a lie, those lights are a petrol platform. With those clumsy ships, they are very likely to sink and get drowned.

There are nowadays NGO that are rescueing these people. And they are BEING ACCUSED by the Italian authorities (former governent) of human trafficking. They are saving them and they know that if they return them to Libia they are likely to die, so they take them to Italy, which is the nearest country. And to avoid the situation, they are being accused of human trafficking. I spoke with a girl from one of those ships, that NGO is a Spanish one. And just a couple of weeks ago they were arrested and were to be judged. Crazy!

Really, Europe is having no shame. The EU is having no shame, countries are having no shame. And all this is being used by far-right parties to get votes. Meanwhile, governments have the same foreign policy as before, destroying countries and taking part in unfair attacks on countries...

I am not surprised by Italys choice.

European Union, where is the Union ? My good germany is the only country in EU who took the most refugees and put them in to humanly camps or houses, unlike in France/ Callais  or Italy.

I hope Germany will get the most money from European Union for its helping spirit.

Neither Hungary, ROmania, Poland, Check Rep. or Austria are willing to get refugees. EU has to do something.

All thes un-unity is a abig problem for EU and doesnt give the spirit what EU stands for.

With accepting migrants, it is stirring intense far-right reactions fueled by citizens fears, just or unjust. This will only make the situation for migrants worse. I don't know the solution. It is a sad situation all around. I don't want to see more EU countries fall to far-right govts. The damage done could be enormous. I fear the dissolution of democracies to fascism which is always the tendency to far-right govts. It's like the 1930's all over again.

No migrant wants to move.

Nobody wants to leave his house, his land, his family, his roots, to go to a foreing and unfriendly country.

That is what far-right people don't comprehend. That if those people are risking their lives to get to our lands is because they are living PURE HELL there. So maybe we should work towards a world where countries are not destroyed? I wonder how many Austrian, British or Italian people who are voting far-right or are supporting decisions to expell migrants are informing themselves to know what their countries are doing in those lands???

Italy has become a fascist state.  I made peace with it as soon as i have heard fascist 5 Stars Movement and racist Northern League won the elections. Italians are very racist and ignorant. I am ashamed of being Italian myself but guess the west is going through a dangerous turn of events where ignorance, racism and pure selfishness are becoming the norm for way too many people.

I don't agree. Spain has had a horrible government for several years, the same as USA has now or UK... But the whole country is not to be judged. Many people there is against those politicians and those governments were elected because the electoral system sometimes benefits rural isolated areas. That's what happened in Spain.

Judging from the results the whole country voted for those two racist fascists so yes the whole country is to blame. Yes theyre using democracy to destroy democracy... the paradox. And im sick of hearing that the rural areas are to blame because they feel isolated and they lost their jobs and the sad stories.. i come from a rural area myself so i know exactly how narrow minded and ignorant they are. They blame evrything and everybody but themselves for their problems. They say theyre religious and go church regularly but they practice the complete opposite of what their religion preaches. They’re hypocrites and the real snowflakes... And yes theyre fucking up everything. And no amount of money or jobs and in some- if not many or all-cases drugs and alcohol is going to keep them happy. They will still be ignorant and nasty. Im done with them.

I donçt know if Sanchez has done this because he really feels it, or as a way of gaining votes...well, around me he has lost some, that´s how society works lately. and votes from left winged workers...anyways, it´s good to hear than for once the spanish government it´s not the shame of europe. and I don´t know about italy´s situation, I don´t know if they have a lot of refugees already. There was a plan about it, and I think europe has throw it to the garbage bin

in this particular case, I don´t think rural areas to blame. At least in the basque country, refugees come to the cities, and they live in poor neighboorhoods. Only a few of them go to rural areas, or to posh places. The people that I see are against the refugees are proletarian people, mostly. In the posh places you can see Welcome refugees flags, not in the proletarian towns or neighboorhoods.Doctors or lawyers don´t feel threatened by them, it´s just the regular people that feel they will use public money to help refugees instead of helping them. Meanwhile, the banks and its owners are idols.

Where I live, rural people are totally against immigration even if they've never seen one immigrant in their life. Ignorants.

Well, most voters in cities are far more interested in news and much more open. It was clear in Spain's latest elections, and that is why in Madrid and Barcelona or Zaragoza there are majors from those new political parties. In London, brexit was refused by a big majority...

Well,  Australia is no better.   Our record for how we treat  "illegal immigrants" is shameful.

Of course who can forget the Jewish people fleeing Europe for America when Hitler was in power and being turned away and sent home - to their deaths.

There's a very suspicious silence regarding all this about the refugees from II WW and USA. Wasn't Anna Frank denied a visa in United States and couldn't flee?

Have seen a documentary on the History channel about the Jewish people sent back to Germany after fleeing to America  and it was devastating.  They knew they were going back to their deaths.  The world is NOT a compassionate place to people from other nation's in need.  Never has been and sadly,  I doubt it ever will be.

And every nation has a VERY BIG bunch of racists. I was just reading some comments written by Spaniards in Facebook complaining about the rescue because "many people here are suffering poverty". I'm sure many of them have their kids of relatives now working abroad, I'm sure they won't see any relation between both cases???? WEll, it is. A Spaniard working abroad is the same as a migrant coming to Spain.

The thing is that the situation is incredibly unfair for those countries having to support all the weight of the immigration. Especially when their foreign politics aren't responsible of the situation (unlike France, for example).
