U.S. music listeners think that K-pop has got Seoul.

Boy band BTS has become the first Korean pop group to score a No. 1 record on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

The outlet announced Sunday that the seven-member group had topped the rankings, which are determined from a formula based on album sales, online purchases and streaming.

BTS was guided to the top by its new album "Love Yourself: Tear," which follows one they released last autumn, "Love Yourself: Her," that cracked the top ten at No. 7.

Multiple tracks from that album reached the Billboard Hot 100 for individual songs and were certified gold, a first for a Korean artist as well as for the genre that has expanded from the peninsula around the world.

K-Pop music has solidified a place in the American music scene in recent years, with its popularity spreading beyond Korean language speakers and amassing large followings online.

BTS also played to a broad American audience as part of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin Eye" this year.

Billboard noted that the group's new release is the first mostly foreign-language album to head up the U.S. charts in more than a decade, after the vocalists Il Divo in 2006.

"Love Yourself: Her" ended a three-week streak by the previous No. 1, "beerbongs & bentleys" by rapper Post Malone.

I tried to listen to this album yesterday and I was not able to go beyond the third song. It is a typical manufactured product for pre-teen girls. Well done, but without any interest at the musical level.

The best thing about them is their plastic surgery.

The music is so manufactured that looking for an ounce of personality and individuality is impossible.

Good for their label, lots of money and more work for the underpaid slaves.

Rotted garbage. I can't stand any of this or them.

From the 1980s to today, the music of boybands has improved greatly over time, but with K-Pop there was a real crash in quality. It's a return to musical mediocrity worthy of the NKOTB.

Let me disagree with you on this: NKOTB paved the way. It went downhill after them.

I would say that NKOTB, N'sync, and the Backstreet Boys are the only boy bands that really matter. No other boy bands have come close to their level of fame and success. All of the others that were sprinkled in between those three are ultimately forgettable.

I don't know if I would consider this group a 'boy band' in the classic sense of the term, but they're kind of a modern spin on one and I've been obsessed. LANY is what they call themselves. Love the production and melodies. The lead singers voice is fantastic too. Reminds me a little of Troye Sivan.

Yes, NKOTB paved the way, but the songs produced by BSB and N'Sync are better qualities and many have gone through time well which is not the case of NKOTB songs. The only NKOTB song I enjoy listening now is Step by Step.
