I would literally faint if she got the Girlie Show band back together. Or scream. Or scream then faint. Can you just imagine these guys jamming out to her 94-2018 works? Or letting them have a go at the classics she skipped in '93? God, I'm creaming myself just at the thought.

I know this (as most things discussed here, really) is a matter of personal taste, but I like the video interludes. I agree the ones on the RHT were lazy (someday I'll write a long post about that tour that nobody asked for and nobody cares about), and Rain wasn't my favorite, but I loved the choreography in both Best Friend and Messiah, even though I 100% wish she had performed that live.

I don't think she'll get rid of the video interludes and I think she's given us some beautiful (Paradise, Nobody Knows Me, Justify My Love) and fun ones (Die Another Day, Illuminati's dancer choreography and I love all the greatest hits medley ones, screw you all) and I personally don't want her to. However, I do want and hope she'll put more effort into them again because most of what she did for RHT left me extremely disappointed.

The interludes used to be brilliant. Integrating video into the live show while having it connect to the surrounding set pieces and the larger themes of the show at large turned the DWT into a multimedia experience. It was revolutionary in its time. Now, everyone uses video and M has divorced these videos from the larger show.

Look at "Paradise." It serves as a bridge from the "Drowned World" reprise she sang at the end of "Ray of Light" to the opening of "Frozen." It introduces the aesthetic. The live performance from the dancers alongside the video is simply stunning. The anime "WIFLFAG (remix)" is a coda to the whole thing, playing off the dark and violent overtones of both the geisha section and the whole show. Look at "Hollywood" -- a song about rejecting commercialism comes right right after "Material Girl" in the most overtly anti-commercial era of her career. It quickly introduces the circus/cabaret, spotlighting the dancers and their unique strengths with different costumes, styles, and music. "Bedtime Story" is a symbol of the afterlife after she was executed in "Lament." In the first Confessions interlude, the dancers literally make their own confessions to the audience. These things connected to the surrounding sets and larger themes of the show. We called them "interludes" but they were really interludes -- they were parts of the show itself.

But these things start breaking down by S&S. "DAD" 2008 was a boxing-themed remix stuffed between pimp "Vogue" and throwback "ITG." "Rain" 2008 was a royalties handout to the Eurythmics (maybe her friend Annie was tight on cash and too proud to ask for a loan). It seemed shoe-horned in just so she could used rain in the intro to "DWRY" ... which is the start of the Latin/Gypsy section? And things keep getting worse right up till we get to "Messiah" and "SEX," the latter of which was just some humping on beds while "Erotica" played in the background and serves as our lead-in to ... the "revolution of love" monologue and matador-themed "LFL?" The concept of a "revolution of love" was a cornerstone of M's work for years -- you can see the seeds of it going all the way back to #secretproject in 2013. And here we are in RHT -- the culmination of this revolution in her artwork -- and we get Disney Channel "Erotica" as the lead in? I've looked at this over and over and over again and I just don't see any message or point being made here. It just seems completely phoned in. These are literally interludes -- the show is effectively stopping for 3-5 minutes so she can take a pee and change her clothes. They have no purpose in the show other than that.

"Illuminati" was good from a performance standpoint, I'll give you that. But it still fails to tie back into its surrounding performances or the show's themes at large. And, really, one good performance in 10 years isn't enough to justify their continued existence.

Get rid of the interludes and try something different. Trying new things is part of what makes Madonna Madonna.

I look at the SEX interlude as an outro to LAV and the whole rockability segment, and Messiah as an outro to Devil Pray, which makes a lot  more sense. Not saying they're very well crafted ones, but why do you have to perceive them as intros to the next song if it wasn't the intention to begin with?

I hope the interludes are here to stay
I know she has been using the same formula (4 segments + interludes) over and over again but I think it still works well and I don't mind if she chooses to go down that route again
I just wish she will not recycle themes again: enough with the japanese section, latino section, radio medley of hits intro, flag version Holiday, politics & environment themed interlude etc...

As for the inturledes, the best ones were hands down the DWT and Re-invention ones
Some choices were a bit odd to say the least, as much as I liked the Eurythmics mash-up, why not use her own song Rain when there's an army of fans who would want to hear it (or at least "see" it)???
And the RHT tour ones, Messiah was quite effective live and doesn't translate well when filmed for the DVD imo. Same goes for Illuminati.
SEX was just lazy but we knew she originally had something different in mind so that's probably why the result is not that great, whatever the reason for the last minute change was.

Anyway did Dago Gonzales direct any of the tour backdrops after Confessions?

EVERY tour should have a Latino section you gringos! On tour I want her to have an elaborate stage set of the Casa Rosada balcony with her singing 1/2 of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina as the regular version and then coming down on stage to fiercely sing and dance the last 1/2 of it in the Miami mix version.

Yes, please! I was just saying in your other thread about Laprise + M that perhaps she’ll partner with him next time (alternating tours, like JPG).

By the way, does he say they were making grilled cheese in her kitchen after her birthday party? Yum and love it!

I am still curious as to what happened with  the backdrop video shot with Tom Munro. I know a couple little “blink and you miss it” moments made it into the final cut, but it’s so bizarre. Hardly worth the time and expense to shoot it for that. Maybe one day we’ll get the full story.

I know Dago Gonzales has done more with her, but they are fewer and less prominent. (Think background projections during live performances instead of interludes.) But I’d have to look it up to be certain.

Illuminati is one of those rarest of interludes where the dancers really stole the attention from the video screens. Those sway poles had a really daring “wow” factor for many people I talked to who attended.

According to the RHT liner notes, Dago Gonzales and Veneno Inc. (his production company, I believe?) were responsible for the backdrop videos for the following:

Deeper & Deeper, Heartbreak City, Dress You Up, and La Isla Bonita.

I’ll see if I can find more for S&ST and MDNAT. I’m fairly sure it is similar level of participation. Nothing quite on the level of DWT Paradise or RIT Orbital Remix of Bedtime Story.

EDIT:

For S&ST, he did *a lot* — here’s the list: Sweet Machine Intro, Beat Goes On, Vogue, Into the Groove, Borderline, She’s Not Me, Music, Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You, Spanish Lesson, Miles Away, La Isla Bonita, Doli Doli, You Must Love Me, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light, and Give It 2 Me. He is listed as “creative director” — there were a lot of other people involved — artists, animators, photographers.

For MDNAT: Turn Up the Radio, Open Your Heart, Sagara Jo, the Erotic Candy Shop, I’m Addicted, Human Nature, and Masterpiece were handled by Veneno Inc., with Dago Gonzales as creative director. Again, lots of others credited as directors, DPs, editors, and motion graphics, etc.

So
you are telling me that the same guy who created those absolute masterpieces for Paradise not for me and Bedtime Story is responsible for the ABOMINATION that was the candy factory sweet machine Windows 95 screensaver thing??????

No way.

I took the time to type up what is in the liner notes as credits. Believe or do not — *I* personally am not telling you anything. Merely relaying.

And there was someone else credited for the Sweet Machine art or concept or something — as a separate credit — but he was still listed as creative director, so he had some hand in it.

Perhaps there is a reason why Madonna moved on to use Munro and Klein for other backdrop films which included new footage of herself (JML for MDNAT, Get Stupid for S&ST, Future Lovers for CT, Iconic for RHT...) ... Perhaps Dago’s agency is busy and can handle the other backdrops but not the interludes with new M footage.

I do not think this will be possible at her age... the MDNA choreo took a toll on her.

Well, back in 2008 we thought that too that the energy choreos from BAT were over and the she cameback with S&S and MDNA. So we should never underestimate her.

On a serious level, I want her to open with a classic this time. Music, ray of light, hung up or express yourself. I don't know it will depend when i'll listen to m14.

Can you imagine hung up, some extended remix but not that far from the original and then we hear "time goes by, so slowly " All of us would faint for sure

Mmmm I'd rather she opened with an epic rendition of a new song, like GGW MDNA

A stunning entrance that leaves us breathless right before going into a classic that will make us dance like crazy and loose our shyt

If she is to do a tour with a lot of new material, then she needs to do a limited smaller venue tour. Demand is not there for larger venues in most markets with a lot of new material.

THEN, with Taylor and Elton likely to challenge or pass SST numbers, she should come back with a full on GH tour with songs close to the original compositions and freaking demolish the touring record once and for all.

That's the thing, I love stadium gigs in Europe, but I understand that it's also not the venue 4 everyone, 4 her kind of shows & setlist,

If you're far away then it's like watching TV I guess... Though I wouldn't know what's that like cuz I've always been near the front & it's fantastic.

I still firmly believe that she’s not doing an extensive tour for the new album, at least not until she’s signing/extending a new touring contract. Since the RHT she’s mentioned multiple times that she’ll be scaling down her future shows and that RHT was a closure to the type of tours she’s been doing for the past 15 years. Why would she say such a thing if she knows there’s one more tour to fulfill under the current Live Nation contract?

hopefully, live nation is gonna charter a few dozen planes filled with solid gold so she actually tours

i understand the allure and appeal of wanting her to go full on tears of a clown for the next tour, i do, really

but the problem is that something like that would mean she'd only play the big cities (ny, la, london, paris) and due to the limited venue capacity, her ticket prices would go full on rolling stones level of insane... and she'd still sell out every night because as if m couldn't find 1,500 - 5,000 gays who have enough money to spend $1000 dollars in concert tickets in the handful of cities she'd visit

so here's hoping for a new, big contract that allows unemployed, fighting-to-finish-college gay losers like me go work the street corner to be able to afford the not-so-impossible $$$ to see her from afar in an actual world tour where she plays in my city

They gave a few hints of the leaks back in the MDNA and RH era I think, maybe they learned something about if this will be a world tour or residency in NY, Lon, Paris.
