Russian military threatens action against the US in Syria

The Russian military has threatened action against the U.S. if it strikes Syria's capital city of Damascus, according to multiple news reports.

The threat, by Chief of Russia's General Staff Valery Gerasimov, was widely reported by Russia media sites such as state news agency RIA and Tass. It said Gerasimov said Russia had "reliable information" about militants preparing to falsify a government chemical attack against civilians.

He continued by saying the U.S. would then use this attack to accuse Syrian government troops of using chemical weapons. He added that the U.S. would then plan to launch a missile strike on government districts in Damascus.

"In several districts of Eastern Ghouta, a crowd was assembled with women, children and old people, brought from other regions, who were to represent the victims of the chemical incident, " Gerasimov said, according to RIA.

Gerasimov said Russia would respond to a U.S. strike on Syria if the lives of Russian servicemen were threatened, targeting any missiles and launchers involved.

"In case there is a threat to the lives of our military, the Russian Armed Force will take retaliatory measures both over the missiles and carriers that will use them," he said.

The U.S. Department of Defense urged Russia to "stop creating distractions" and "enabling the Assad regime's brutality" in a statement sent to CNBC responding to the allegations.

This is really so shocking. I mean, and people still don't think it is important to be aware of what is happening in the world?

Our only hope is that Trump, being the useless person that he is, will be so clumsy that this situation will be publicy known and it will be a big scandal.

It never ceases to amaze me though, how many people are deliberately ignorant of major world events.  They are not even interested in studying, looking and discussing this. Just buying the press releases of events.

I think the reason is because sometimes we feel that bad things happen in countries that are more stupid, or violent, or "they deserve".

It is not a line of thought that is very concious. It is as when there is some kind of natural dissaster in South Asia and there are images on tv and you dont' think it is the same as if the dissaster were in the centre of Germany. As if "those people" really could keep on living easier and "will have a wooden house build in two weeks and keep on working in rice camps". We reduce them to some convenient cliche in our minds. We move on very easily.

With conflicts in Mid East we behave the same. We've been watching on tv those conflicts for decades now. "they are always fighting" we think, as if they were rised to fight, and could very easily endure the loss of a family member or the fact that their lives have no hope.

It is something that we were tought to think, because this society never promotes empathy, in fact it promotes individualism and the right to pursue our own happiness, no matter what.

True but with so much information available for people to look at, discuss, and provide analysis on,  so many are not bothering  to even look at it in any proper detail.

The fact I am reading more intelligent conversation about this issue on a Madonna forum, then on a lot of the mainstream news is appalling.

And if chemical weapons are a red line then keep in mind the west supported Saddam with chemical weapons from Germany used in attacks against Iranian villages.

Spare me this bullshit.

It's really no surprise that the masses are turning away from mainstream media when this crock gets reported exactly as their masters tell them to. Where's the real investigative journalism these days?

And now I'm hearing that the chemical weapons inspectors are claiming they can't get access to the site and by the time they do the "evidence" will be gone while peddling that the Russians have probably tampered with it anyway. It's like a bad comedy sketch.

And the fact that these idiots are acting in OUR name, making decisions without a vote from their respective parliaments, making bullshit statements about the horrors of war while FUNDING and MAKING the very weapons used to kill civilians in said wars is sickening in the extreme.

The thing is that serious journalism has never been more necessary and at the same time serious press and have never been more slave to the power.

What a waste opportunity for journalism. How can we later claim that they'd better trust us instead of an unkown blog?

Well at this point too many people still get their news from watching the telly and reading their shit tabloids. The balance hasn't quite tipped yet, but it will.

On the other hand, there's such a shoulder-shrugging culture these days -  so many people just don't seem to CARE about anything anymore. I hear the phrase "it doesn't matter, nothing will get done about it, nothing will change" too much for my liking, but as things stand, they're probably right.

Also how can people so "conveniently"  forget the debacle of the Iraq war ?   Bush and his cohorts going in there with all guns blazing over weapons of mass destruction that were not found because they were not there.  They never had to answer to that either which is disgraceful.

Now, with this happening and people not only blindly and completely believing the stuff peddled to them by government spin doctors but not even bothering to want to look any further into it to either back up their thoughts or dismiss them.

Mainstream news is an absolute joke.  The saddest part is people would rather watch commercial news and garbage current affair shows where the main stories are mostly complete fluff and not bother with ABC or SBS current affairs because they have more detailed analysis of the events.  Let alone, look into reading detailed discussion that is freely available online.

They can not use the excuse that it "does not concern them"   With the main players of the Western world - plus Russia involved -  it does involve them.

It is just as sickening to see Australian politicians doing their usual "  we support America"  routine.

I am seeing a bit of the opposite in a way. I think the people that truly care about politics and world events, are craving good journalism. With all the " fake news"  and "alternative facts" talk that has been pushed to distraction, many are becoming aware of the need for intelligent and well researched media.  They can see the damage of politicians and leaders dismissing any criticism of them by demonising the press with these dangerous phrases.

If only the majority of the GP would get on board and demand proper true journalism. Then things could and definitely should change.

It gets worse. After we bombed Syria because Syria bombed Syria, the investigation starts NOW to know if Syria really bombed Syria.

I love how the media has be super careful to very clearly call it an ALLEGED chemical weapons attack because clearly nobody has any proof it ever happpened
