Uber London loses licence to operate

Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

TfL concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a London private hire operator licence.

It said it took the decision on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".

Confirming it would appeal against the decision, Uber said it showed the world "far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".

TfL's concerns include Uber's approach to carrying out background checks on drivers and reporting serious criminal offences.

Uber's current licence is due to run until 30 September.

It has 21 days to appeal against TfL's decision and can continue to operate while any appeals are ongoing.

Some 3.5 million passengers and 40,000 drivers use the Uber app in London.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "I fully support TfL's decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety and security."

Fred Jones, head of cities for Uber across the UK and Ireland, told the BBC Uber drivers had to pass the same safety checks as black cab and mini cab drivers in London.

There had been growing speculation that the app could be banned from London.

Opponents of the firm claim it causes gridlocked roads and does not do enough to regulate its drivers.

But one driver with Uber in London said: "I don't think it is a fair decision. Uber offers a flexible schedule, and a weekly income

Über, AirBnb ... f*ck the sharing economy. The biggest fraud there ever was. And it is the perfect example how all those socially conscious people throw their values over board when they can save a few pennies. The negative impact on society these business models have is huge. From my perspective every government of a country or a city has the obligation to forbid these services. They can only operate under the same rules and regulations as the traditional businesses they compete with. The problem? These business models hardly ever work under fair market conditions.

Amen

The solution to corporations isn't these horrible new companies.  Airbnb has enpovered millions of people, being responsible of skyrocketing rents now.

Uber means less security when anybody can take you from place a to b.  And leaves professional drivers without a job.

Just another, even more transparent ugly face of capitalism in the digital era. You're spot on about those social justice warriors and their misogyny.

Couldn't agree more

It is absolutely outrageous

I don't know about other cities across Europe but here in Milan a publicly licensed cab driver has to fork out €100,000 upfront, just to obtain the license. It's like a mortgage basically and it happens to get passed down within the family from one generation to the next in many cases to absorb the costs

Why people who work hard and pay all their taxes have to be taken for fools with this crap app economy system? They have been busy destroying the middle and working classes for over a decade now.

Unfortunately it's not just the conservative governments doing the nasty job for multinationals, banks and tech company giants but also left leaning politicians. "Job and pension reforms" = more disruption of the job market and work force ahead. See what Macron is trying to implement now in France
