Suedey 0 Posted August 20, 2017 Let's face it most of us on this forum are in our 30s and 40s. Do you still get excited about new music and discover new artists? I am curious. We all know the cliche is that as we get older we stick with our old favourites and as much as I always made fun of and criticised my parents as I was growing up I do wonder if I am falling into the same natural pattern. That being said, I was going through my music collection today - particularly the CDs and vinyl - inspired by Shane's thread earlier, and I found out that I have discovered artists over the past 5-10 years. Some of them have been: Ezra Furman, John Grant, Father John Misty, HAIM (:shy: ), First Aid Kit, Laura Marling, Bats For Lashes (OK not that recent I guess) But the list is short and forever dwindling. I do worry. Where do you go for new music (if you do)?
Shane 0 Posted August 20, 2017 Yes, absolutely. That's actually one of the things I love about Spotify: that it saves me from wasting money on utter trash. When I love it, I buy the cd. I got into a lot of music in the late OO's that I now consider favorites: Bat For Lashes, Flo and her Machine, Brandi Carlile. Recent discoveries for me who I'm in love with are Chvrches, First Aid Kit, Emma Ruth Rundle, Wolf Alice, Haim, and Muna (every Madonna fan needs to check them out). Sadly, I have a hard time getting into men (musically). My collection must be 90 percent female artists. Always trying to remedy this.
Suedey 0 Posted August 20, 2017 Shane you must must must investigate JOHN GRANT. He's fantastic!

Martin B. 0 Posted August 20, 2017 Yes, of course. Metacritic, Pitchfork and Les Inrocks are my favorite sites to discover new artists. I also like to explore Apple Music's new releases on Friday to discover new music.
eroticerotic 0 Posted August 20, 2017 all the time. always on the lookout and listening. sounds intrigue me, rhythms intrigue me, progressions intrigue me. and the top 40 of today does not, for the most part. so my little curious mind leads me to explore around. :) i dont feel that the list of great music gets shorter @Suedehead but i do understand what you mean. i feel that the visible majority now is not pro diversity/creativity. it's more pro/cash. it will take very strong willed artists to bring demand back to diversity. I discover music on the internet, talking to people, and now i have somewhat in on the music scene and can discover that way too. you just have to be curious! Besides, at the moment I'm rediscovering the fantastic music made in the seventies.

erotica blu 0 Posted August 21, 2017 I like learning about older artists whom I'm unfamiliar with. Newer ones that are younger than me make me feel old unless their music has some heft to it.

Bill 0 Posted August 21, 2017 For years, I was stuck listening to the same music over and over again, waiting for my favorite artists to release something new. Then, I discovered indie music earlier this year by listening to playlists on Youtube and it was like an awakening for me. I couldn't believe how much GOOD music was still being made. I thought today's music was shit (some of it is, but some of it always has been). It's been fantastic hearing all these new artists, new songs. Some that have really come at the perfect time in my life. Question for those who stream music. Do you prefer Spotify or Amazon Music as a paid prescription service? Right now, I use Amazon, but just signed up for a free trial is Spotify Premium. I don't want/need both. What do you guys think of Spotify?
Lolo 0 Posted August 21, 2017 I actually listen to more new music now than I did in my twenties, simply because it's gotten so much easier and convenient. But I don't get attached as quickly as 10-15 years ago. @Bill I use Spotify Premium and it's enough for me. It's fine. But I'm not a music maniac. I have no experiences with other services. tasteinmen 0 Posted August 21, 2017 I love discovering new music, but I also love treasuring the artists I've always loved and discovered over the years. Spotify is great for discovering new music, Muna came on the other week, I was immediately hooked and now I can't stop listening to their album, so I'm thankful for Spotify. Nick 0 Posted August 22, 2017 Happy fans on forum are still looking for new music to listen to. My favorite albums that have been released during past six months to a year have been from Royal Blood, Childish Gambino, Goldfrapp, Thievery Corporation, Depeche Mode, etc. Some of the new material from Harty Styles & even The Gossip have been good. Listening to music is like therapy for me. Listen while I'm working, exercising, driving, cleaning my apartment etc. It's important to try to listen to diverse artists unless it's really not your thing at all. You can enjoy all your longtime favorites while broadening your taste.
rocknrolla 0 Posted August 22, 2017 I always love new music and always get excited when I hear a new song I really like (I'm 42). The big difference is that I hardly even listen to a full length album by an artist I newly discover. Probably because I never buy a physical album anymore, with very rare exceptions. Drowned World 0 Posted August 25, 2017 For me, it's whatever happens to be on the radio. If I like the song, I will look it up and find out more about it and the artist. I find that I'm liking the older stuff now, though. I also discover new music through movies as well, that helps introduce me to a new genre. I like discovering music that way. I discovered an artist called Nick Gillette recently through a short film on LA, and I really liked his song "Why".
