A Chinese man has undergone surgery in Shanghai to remove a section of his colon containing 13kg of impacted faeces, bringing to an end 22 years of pain caused by chronic constipation.

Zhou Hai, not his real name, visited the 10th People’s Hospital of Shanghai last week after complaining of severe stomach pains and struggling to breathe, news portal Thepaper.cn reported on Thursday.

Following a CT scan, doctors diagnosed Zhou as having Hirschsprung’s disease, a rare condition that causes the colon to malfunction and can result in a build-up of faecal matter. It mainly affects babies and young children.

Zhou told doctors that he had been suffering from constipation all his life and regularly took laxatives to alleviate the discomfort, though they did not ease the pain, the report said.

His parents said they were aware of their son’s ailment but had no idea it was symptomatic of a more serious problem.

During a three-hour operation in Shanghai, surgeon Yin Lu and his team removed a 76cm-long section of Zhou’s colon weighing 13kg, the report said.

Yin advised all parents to seek medical advice if their children frequently complain of constipation.
