Sheryl Crow criticizes Madonna and exposes her own hypocrisy

Recommended Posts

I do think there was a problem after Madonna, that wasn't her fault.  Madonna was so utterly successful that every record company and manager thought they had to do the same thing with every pop girl that came after.  What this led to was a lot of girls who were totally ignorant to Madonna's message, truth, and personality, walking around showcasing themselves in every way possible.  What I saw in the wake of Madonna was a bunch of female pop stars who didn't really feel confident in their sexuality but attempting to project that they did.  And it wasn't just one female pop star. It was 95-98% of them.

The only pop stars who are genuine with their sexuality are Rihanna and Beyoncé (off the top of my head). The others are trying to create an image necessary for success.  We have Ariana singing about getting fucked so hard she's walking side to side, Gaga singing about how she loves to rub her busted chew, and Britney caterwauling about threesomes. So few stars are willing to be genuine.

Madonna was genuine and in her time, talking about sex and dressing provocatively wasn't some key to success -if anything it should have been a hindrance. Madonna got lucky and also had the charisma and star quality that held her up despite all the criticism. But now, it's the opposite and unless you're naked and singing about how much you love sex you won't get anywhere.

So when Madonna did it it was rebellious, and when these girls do it, it's acclimating.

This is absolutely true. Madonna takes a lot of the blame for what the girls who followed did in her name. People like Britney citing M as an influence has always bugged the shit out of me because she has absolutely no understanding of what M was doing/saying. All these girls saw was the sex part and not the message. So it's not really fair for people like Sheryl to put the blame on Madonna...although to be fair M was simply used as an example because that's who she was asked about.

That's disappointing coming from Sheryl when she seemed to be quite a big supporter of Madonna's in the past. If anything, Madonna has shown women they can be whoever they want to be, and unapologetically. One thing she's never been short of is an opinion. Right from the start, she always knew what she wanted, and was in total control over her image and music. I think Sheryl needs to re-evaluate her opinion. Or maybe some women, like her, can't handle a woman being blatantly in charge of their own sexuality AND having an intelligent opinion. They feel intimidated because it conflicts with what they've been led to believe by the patriarchy.

I don't think anything she said contradicts or negates how she feels about M's music. It's about image and marketing. And I do think Sheryl is being a bit of a hypocrite since her image definitely got sexier over the years.

What we can perceive is that Madonna's message, ideology, quest for freedom, understanding, acceptance and ideals have never been understood by the majority of the industry, her peers, the media and the general public, which honestly is a pity as she has delivered a very smart, heartfelt and powerful message.

There are many layers to what Madonna means but people always seems to go for the most superficial ones.

Thank god there's also a very very large part of the world that has listened and understood her.

A reevaluation of opinion could work. Here's another... Why not speak to Madonna in private? Catch-up; immerse in casual conversation. Again this is not to insinuate M should be littered w/ yes men/ ahem women. However one of the best ways of knowing someone; understanding them is picking up their point of view. Be interested in them; not simply interesting. Gossip; assumption are evils.

Dan Rather is a renowned journalist. One of the biggest problems with media is their insistence on perpetuating truculence among public figures; whether it be entertainment, faith, politics, sports along with other mediums.

How is a woman showing the world how to OWN your sexuality and not be afraid of it or a victim of it like Madonna has not powerful ?  Another bitter twat from the Lillith Fair Gang of pretentious "singer song writers" spouting their sour grapes because Madonna forever changed the trajectory of what it means to be a woman in music.  Did it ALL without a man standing behind her telling her what to do.  And like those pictures show Sheryl tried to get on the sexual train as well but just didn't cut it.

Sheryl is dead wrong, but what did you expect? The woman played it safe for entire career. And that's fine and all, until you start harping on about how others have refused to get in line with your homogenized sensibilities.

So much for hiding her body when she started...  FIRST SINGLE COVER

crow001.jpg

Basic America's sweetheart

Not too threatening but still likeable

So basically she's criticising Madonna for having done the exact opposite, i.e. not having worn a particular image to please anybody, rather having worn a thousand to only make herself happy and never having been dependant on media approval or any one particular industry individual and still massively successful, or perhaps exactly because of her authenticity and unwillingness to be subservient in exchange for "favourable ratings"

I think the underlying tone of this type of remark is precisely their awareness of lacking those traits so it becomes Madonna uses sex to sell herself.

Never mind an often incredibly overlooked and belittled body of work that speaks volumes on its own, or her professionalism, her discipline and most of all how little time she spends talking about Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde and Cyndi Lauper. Zero in fact. Certainly not in a dismissive or haughty way. Despite having obviously achieved much more creatively speaking and over an infinite longer period of time, and I am not talking about a difference in numbers

Perhaps they could all do with a tad more humbleness and graciousness. The real motives behind certain assertions are rather transparent, no matter how entitled they are to them

I get where she's coming from but Madonna is the last female artist anyone should accuse of such things.  It's always been crystal clear that she owns her sexuality and does it for her own enjoyment, not out of titillation, but basics never seem to get it.  Her criticism would be way more suited to people like Britney

Exactly! Madonna is sexual for her own enjoyment and self-expression. She's not trying to turn you on or gain your approval. That point seems to go over everyone's head. They don't understand context. In our society, sexual = sexual no matter way.

she was clearly criticizing Madonna and implying she had no talent and blaming her for people seeing women as only sex objects

I thinking you're reaching a bit far there. She never implied Madonna had no talent.

After seeing those photos in this thread of Sheryl with little clothing on and trying to be sexy,  she either has memory loss or is just a hypocrite who wants to sound like she is smart but failing miserably. She even posed in a short short dress and high heels with a guitar.  Way to use her body to draw attention to her art - ie the musical instrument she plays.  Since she is so against that as she mentioned in her response.  How is that "moving the molecules"

Sheryl, make up your mind.  You can do whatever you want and so can every other woman in the music industry. Embrace personal choice and don't accuse others of things, when the photo evidence of yourself doing the " so called same things"  are there to see.

Exactly

I had never seen those pictures myself

As soon as I have read about her comment I thought "what a pity, I enjoy a handful of her songs, pity she's giving a false representation and semplificaton of what Madonna is about, whether it's based on envy or anything else, little difference it makes"

Now I am like WTF, it makes no sense whatsoever

Not sure how anyone can say that Sheryl is not having a dig at Madonna with this paragraph..  Remember she was asked about Madonna and in particular Madonna's Billboard speech so her words do imply to her completely in every way.

"I would never say that someone else's opinion is 'baloney,' but what I would say about it is, for the women that are out there now, I would always ask the question, "'Do you feel more empowered by using your body to draw attention to your art? Or do you feel more empowered by wielding a talent that moves the molecules,'" Crow said. "And to me, I choose the latter, because--I mean, I wouldn't put it all on Madonna--but there's a certain part of me that says when you start exploring sex as a woman's power and you project that into art as a business form, you change the way women are forever looked at."

Sorry, but she is out of line and it goes beyond having her own opinion. Sick to death of other female stars either straight out trashing Madonna or being passive aggressive and throwing the whole "using your body etc"  garbage.  Acting like they are so superior because they are not sexual.   Thank God Madonna does not judge other female stars on how they express their sexuality.

What a surprise

Another basic uneducated braggart who constantly thanks God for his blessings in every interview he does

Must be the same God that Trump prays to when he shows "concern for the children of Syria"

"Madonna one of Michigan's greats? Madonna's done nothing for Detroit man"

If you say so dear

OMG that video makes it all even more obvious :lmao:

Look at her holier than thou facial expressions, how seemingly disgusted she is :rotfl:

Maybe she's watched a Superbowl from a parallel Universe or something

Pole dancing? Sure more people tuned in to the half time Madonna performance than the actual game and made it the most watched one in 46 years time because of Madonna's pole dancing or her sexualising herself as a marketing ploy?? Not only she's a hypocrite she's also not very bright and doesn't realise how petty and transparent on top of incoherent she sounds

Why women who embrace their femininity and sexuality are supposed to be using them to appeal to a man but a man doing the same thing with his own sexuality is considered a model and a hero? Why do you have women who think of other women in those terms. Live and let live

Crow should have a sit and run through the MDNA Tour alone and understand that a 54 year old woman did all of that five nights a week for seven months and held so many audiences across the world captivated and completely enthralled by it.

Must be the pole dancing she's talking about? Please ... What other pop singers feature so many aulic references in their work? And still manage to entertain and make it joyful and energy packed?

A boy looking at that should go "that's the kind of woman I want because she's powerful"

To me I say no, that's my opinion, that was my soapbox stand, you opened that can of worms, laughs

Funny how time is the fairest judge

Particularly for the self-righteous and the hypocrites

Not to mention the lazy and the money-grubbing

Look at yourself first Sheryl, time to perhaps get off your moral high horse

She tries to be sexy but she looks more like a skank.  That's why she's jealous and bitter.  Plus of course her career is non-existent.
