Boris Johnson fails to secure backing of the G7 nations for swift sanctions against Russia and Syria

Boris Johnson has failed to secure the backing of the G7 nations for swift sanctions against Russia and Syria, leaving the US-UK plan to pressurise Vladimir Putin in tatters. Germany and Italy vetoed the idea of targeting Russian and Syrian military leaders until an investigation has been carried out into who was to blame for last week’s nerve gas attack in Idlib province.

The Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said Mr Putin “must not be pushed into a corner”, suggesting Italy may not support extra sanctions even if an investigation proves Assad was to blame. On Monday night President Donald Trump and Theresa May said that there was “a window of opportunity” to persuade Russia that “its allegiance with Assad is no longer in its strategic interest”, but it now seems that window is rapidly closing because of Germany and Italy’s lack of support. The EU high representative for foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, is also understood to have been cool on the idea of sanctions.

It means Rex Tillerson, the US Secretary of State, will fly to Moscow tonight with a hugely weakened hand.

Mr Johnson had cancelled a trip to Moscow earlier this week to lead the G7’s response to the gas attack, but its rejection of his plans caused embarrassment for the Foreign Secretary. Having talked yesterday that the US cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase had “changed the game” and that it presented “a very substantial opportunity” to put pressure on Russia, Mr Johnson was forced to backtrack today, even suggesting Russia may have known nothing about the gas attack.

Despite reports last night that Russia had prior knowledge of the attack and tried to cover it up, Mr Johnson said: “We don’t know if the Russians were involved at all, they may simply have been betrayed by their client [Syria].”

Mr Johnson, who said yesterday that the evidence of Syria’s culpability in the gas attack was “absolutely conclusive”, said today that an investigation was needed because while there was a “wide degree of acceptance” for sanctions, it had to be done in “the proper legal way”. Mr Johnson insisted his proposals "had a wide degree of acceptance... but you've got to do these things in the proper, legal way". He told Sky News: "What I think we all want to see is Russia engaging with a political process that involves a transition to a new government in Syria.

And the greatest irony is that post Brexit Referendum Cabinet Reshuffle out of all people they could have picked to represent Britain in its foreign policy dealings, they chose someone like Johnson. The man is a monument to cartoonishness and incompetence and it doesn't matter that he can produce a few quotes in Latin or Ancient Greek. He's just said how Putin has been betrayed by his client Assad :rotfl:

That alone shows either is a clumsy liar or just a clownish clueless useful idiot and I think the latter is much more probable.

Now that Assad had regained control of most of the CIA/Mossad funded terrosists "rebel-held" areas, now that they had finally managed to drive ISIS away from Palmyra (and only thanks to the Russians ironically, because prior to their intevention, nothing was truly being done to contrast them, so much that Israel and Turkey had been providing aide to them at any given chance), what does Assad do? Order a chemical attack on his own people while he's being constantly watched by the enitre world for six years??

And betraying Putin when in fact Putin and Iran are the only two elements in the region to insist that the guy cannot be removed if not through a legitimate process?

It makes no fucking sense, just like UN inspector Carla Del Ponte clearly stated back in the summer of 2013 (the first chemical attack which almost set off Obama to deliver the attack that now Trump has instead delivered): she said that it was the rebels to have used chemical weapons and not Assad forces

This is all a pretext to deliver, yet again, one of the most brutal, unilateral, illegal under international law aggressions on a sovreign state which is just the ultimate proxy conflict to harangue Russia, Iran and China into a much scarier and wider confrontation. It's amazing when you think how easily distractable and forgetful we can be, it's like Iraq 2003 and all that in turn it has produced never happened, without mentioning Libya and what it's contributed to in the Mediterranean over the past six years

You don't suddenly find out about cruel dictators, according to the opportunity of the moment. When people start questioning the massive dose of bullshit and absolute contradictions they are fed on a daily basis it will be a great day for humanity

But some friendships never end

Washington DC - Israel - Saudi Arabia and Britain's MI6  (all Vatican controlled entities, the real strings puller for almost a couple of millennia)

"Appear" is right. From what I ve read it seems Russia has helped Trump enormously to get elected. And its not an easy task to appear the bad guy compared to Trump. Those two "machos" feel like natural allies, not enemies. From their obvious dislike of lgbt ppl, to their desire to appear "on top" of the world, to their love of authoritarian rule, those two are match made in heaven.
