Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, police shootings. :(

Recommended Posts

Have you guys read about Deray Mckesson who is gay and part of Black Lives Matter who got arrested for no reason during a New Orleans protest yesterday? First the cops said they arrested him cuz he was on the street (you aren't supposed to be on a street during a protest or something) then when they found out he wasn't they changed their story and said he was arrested cuz he was on private property. I saw another video of a woman speaking very politely to a reporter and she suddenly got grabbed by cops and arrested as well

/sidenote a lot of hetero black men on social media dropped their support of him after finding out he was gay

I can't believe that a community of people who have been so fucked over would do it to another. Again this is some weird culturally inherent thing. To me it's so obvious that you wouldn't hate somebody for these very normal things. It's as dumb as having hatred for left handed people or people with curly hair. Like, why in all actual fucks do people think these superficial things are so important? Mind boggling.

This thread is so depressing

The whole world is depressing right now. At least before social media we didn't know half the things and we were stupid but happier. Now we have all this information but we don't know what to do and end up frustrated.

as long as cops keep getting impunity, this will keep happening.

Who the hell are people supposed to turn to when the person abusing you is a cop? They're so eager to give jail time to a druggie but not to cops who unjustly kill and hurt others. Fellow cops also try to help do cover ups. Its horrible. And a good number of americans don't see this as a problem, they'd rather be silent and blame the victim.

The Dallas shooting happened cause some guy with mental problems was pushed over the edge from this failed justice system and police corruption. But the media goes ahead and blames BLM instead :manson:

Yet Dylann Roof that killed 9 people in the church in Charleston was taken to Burger King before he was taken into custody.

The thing about the shootings is that racism aside...these police officers are abusing their position of power! They should not only lose their job but should be blocked from any public service jobs in the future. They should be given a jail sentence!!! The racist issue of America is much deeper than the police force and needs to be tackled properly. There needs to be a cultural change not just a policy.

wow thats the first thing you've written here that i whole heartedly agree with. ha

COVER UP?

Alton Sterling Witness: Cops Took My Phone, My Surveillance Video, Locked Me Up

ZACK KOPPLIN

07.11.166:34 PM ET

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- The owner of the convenience store where Alton Sterling was killed last week by cops alleges in a lawsuit that police stole surveillance video from his shop, confiscated his cell phone, and locked him inside a car for the next four hours.

Abdullah Muhlafi, proprietor of the Triple S Mart, saw police confront and kill Sterling who was selling CDs with his permission in the front parking lot last Tuesday night. Muhlafi recorded part of the incident in footage he gave The Daily Beast last week that shows Sterling did not have a weapon in his hand when Officer Howie Lake shouted "gun!" and Officer Blane Salamoni fired six shots into his chest.

Muflahi claims in a lawsuit filed Monday in Baton Rouge district court that after Salamoni killed Sterling, he immediately told responding officers Lt. Robert Cook and Officer Timothy Ballard to confiscate the "entire store security system" and detain him.

"I told them I would like to be in the store when [they took it]," Muflahi told The Daily Beast, adding that he also demanded they get a warrant for the seizure of his private property.

Officers didn't even file an application for a search warrant, The Daily Beast found last week. Nor did Muflahi sign a "Voluntary Consent to Search Form" with the Baton Rouge police.

After taking away Muhlafi's cellphone -- and the damning video on it -- Lt. Robert Cook and Officer Timothy Ballard locked the him in the back of a police car for the next four hours, the lawsuit claims. The only time Muhlafi was let out was when he had to use the restroom.

"The officers would not allow Mr. Muflahi to use the restroom inside of his business establishment and he was escorted to the side of his building and forced to relieve himself right there within arm distance of a BPRD officer and in full view of the public," the lawsuit states.

During the four hours inside a cop car and another two hours at police headquarters, Muhlafi was allegedly prevented from making a phone call to his family or an attorney.

Muhlafi is suing Salamoni, Lake, Cook, and Ballard as well as the City of Baton Rouge and police chief Carl Dabadi. The lawsuit seeks damages for "false arrest, false imprisonment, the illegal taking and seizing of his security system, illegally commandeering his business," attorney Joel Porter told The Daily Beast on Monday.

Hours after Muflahis lawsuit was filed, it was revealed that police had filed the search warrant and the affidavit with a court clerk on Monday morning--six days after Sterling was killed.

The warrant suggests that Cook waited five hours after he began his investigation at the Triple S Mart before applying for a warrant to search for the video. Cook submitted an affidavit to Commissioner Quintillis Lawrence at 5:23 a.m. and Lawrence authorized the warrant that very same minute, court papers show. At 5:50 a.m. Cook began his search and finished by 7 a.m., according to the warrant's return.

The timeline definitely doesnt add up, Porter told The Daily Beast.

Muflahi claimed in his lawsuit that police detained him and took the hard drive around 1 a.m. So either police waited five hours to get a warrant and seize the hard drive or they grabbed the hard drive and got a warrant after the fact to make the seizure appear legal.

The only way to know which scenario is true is to see the security camera footage, which would show if it was terminated before or after the warrant was authorized. However, police don't have just the video but the hard drive itself, making it impossible to challenge their timeline of events unless and until they give up the video.

Porter claims police exceeded the warrants authority by seizing the hard drive.

"The warrant gives the Baton Rouge Police Department the authority to search the surveillance video on recording device, it doesnt give them the authority to seize the device,"

he said.

The warrant states that "the purpose and reason for the search is to find and seize the item(s) listed above," referring to Video Surveillance from the Digital Video Recorder. It continues, "You are hearby ordered to search the aforesaid Revo Digital Video Recorder ...and if the thing(s) specified are found there, to seize them and hold them in safe custody pending further orders from the court."

"How did the police know the brand of recorder without already searching the back room where it was kept?" Porter asked.

"They lied in the warrant," he said, calling it "laughable."

In response to questions surrounding the investigation, Gov. John Bel Edwards "believes all evidence should be collected in accordance with the law," said spokesman Richard Carbo, although he wouldnt comment on the specifics of the case, and again deferred to law enforcement on details.

Louisiana Congressman Cedric Richmond told The Daily Beast, "I think the public has a right to know under what authority the tapes were seized."

Protests over Sterlings killing have been escalating over the past few days, with 48 people arrested on Sunday and more than 100 arrested on Saturday. More protests are planned for Monday with no signs of letting up.

Something I am finding very annoying is the attitudes of the usual suspects in the media who always deny that racism exists in the world and think it is all a beat up. The ones that write for right wing papers. Straight away they are focusing on their "facts" and saying that there is more reverse racism in the world. The thing is they are not even mentioning the video and footage of the murder of Alton Sterling when they write their articles. It is to them, not an issue to even discuss or look at, instead they just rant about people peddling hate.

Revenge shootings of police is disgusting and inexcusable and should be condemned strongly and loudly by everyone. The same though should also be said about the murder of citizens by police. Things can't just be swept under the carpet and people told to "get over it' The police force needs to be cleaned up. Both for the good and honest police who are unfairly maligned and targeted and also for the public who should feel safe when pulled over in the cars and not expect to be shot and killed.

I agree that he is a national embarrassment to our country.

Don't you think that Laura was thinking, "Oh fuck.. now the entire world will know he's back on the bottle."

Or do you think that he's still sober and Laura was thinking, "This is why we don't go out in public anymore."

His behavior was so WEIRD that I have a hard time believing he was sober (don't know the stimulant)

I KNOW I shouldn't laugh at this. But God dammit I can't help myself!

Is he on the bottle again? Or is he just that clueless?

Same here. Laughed my head off at him. He looked and acted like my drunk great Uncle at Christmas dinner who wants to dance, sing and hold hands all the time while swaying around with a happy look on his face.
