Nick Clegg: Deeply shocked at this vile affront to our democracy
Nick Clegg, a friend of the MP and former deputy prime minister, has described how shocked he is that such violence has been enacted against Mrs Cox.
He offered his thoughts to the family and friends of the MP.
"I am deeply shocked as someone who knows Jo. She is a lovely decent person, full of goodwill to everybody. My heart goes out to her and everybody affected.
"But also it is such a vile affront to our democracy. One of the great things about our democracy is that anybody can just wander in and see their MP in their weekly surgeries.
"That violence against Jo, although that is the most important thing... is also violence against our democratic values and very proud democratic traditions."

A man, 53, was arrested at the scene after armed police flooded the area

A Labour MP is fighting for her life in hospital after she was shot three times - once in the head - by a man who reportedly shouted 'Britain First'.

Mother-of-two Jo Cox, who represents Batley and Spen, was arriving for a surgery meeting in Birstall near Leeds when she was attacked by the gunman.

An eyewitness said: 'Three times she was shot, the initial time, then she dropped to the floor and two more times. The third time he got close proximity he shot her round the head area.'

Others claimed the gunman shouted 'Britain First' during the attack, which has left Ms Cox, 41, fighting for her life in hospital.

A man - named locally as Tommy Mair - has been arrested. Forensic officers are currently conducting searches at a house where 53-year-old Mr Mair lives.

Ms Cox's husband Brendan, who was part of the EU Remain campaign's 'flotilla' in London yesterday, tweeted a photo of her after she was rushed to hospital.

Campaigning for the EU referendum by Britain Stronger in Europe and Vote Leave has been suspended for the day after the attack.

Witness Clarke Rothwell who runs a cafe near where the attack took place, told the BBC he believed the MP had been shot and stabbed multiple times.

He said: 'He [the attacker] was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife.'

Another witness, Sam Watson, added: 'The man walked away calmly and nobody wanted to approach him.'

Hichem Ben Abdallah, 56, was in the cafe next door to the library when he heard screaming and went outside.

He said: 'There was a guy who was being very brave and another guy with a white baseball cap who he was trying to control and the man in the baseball cap suddenly pulled a gun from his bag.

'He was fighting with her and wrestling with her and then the gun went off and then she fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding on the floor.'

It was earlier thought Ms Cox had intervened in a fight between two men but it is now believed she was attacked.

What's going on in the world????

My thoughts too. It's absurd. Having different ideas or being frustrated about something is no excuse to take another person's life away. Unacceptable. Those innocent children left motherless now, so sad

how does that happen with all those gun laws?

The point is, if you look at the stats by the end of the year, it will be a freak one off. Meanwhile, in the US, there have been seven mass shootings since Orlando.

We do still have occasional gun crimes but a tiny amount which is why this is so shocking.
