2016 Pulse Nightclub mass shooting

Recommended Posts

If guns were banned all around would you need people with guns...in schools? You wouldn't need people with guns protecting you anywhere the majority of the time.

I'm curious.

In your mind, if the 'perfect' gun laws went into effect and were WELL enforced in the US, who would still be armed?

The police, and other government agencies and................

Criminals who never have and never will give a shit about the laws that govern.

Is this a scenario you are comfortable with?

I'm all for investing in education for future generations but my family and I are living in the here and now. Innocent people should lay down and be assaulted, raped and murdered while we wait for them to sort themselves out?

Yeah but those criminals would be an extreme minority.

Deaths by guns in the US 2016 - 6,159.

Deaths by guns in the UK 2013 - 117. (The most recent I could find). So within six months the US has had as many gun related murders as the UK would have in 55 years! If you say the US population is 5 times that of the UK that means the equivalent of...

12,318 gun murders in the US per year.

585 gun murders in the UK per year.

So in other words the UK has about 5% as many gun homicides as the U.S does. I don't get why anybody even tries to rationalise this. Guns shouldn't be widely available. Simple.

Off topic but Michael you're gorgeous!

Not as gorgeous as you girl! I wish we had a simple answer to all the hate and violence in our world. For me I'm pissed that some are trying to downplay the homophobia and make this about other agendas.

Here's some more data:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, firearms were used in 84,258 nonfatal injuries (26.65 per 100,000 U.S. citizens) and 11,208 deaths by homicide (3.5 per 100,000), 21,175 by suicide with a firearm, 505 deaths due to accidental discharge of a firearm, and 281 deaths due to firearms- ...

85,000 injured by firearms in one year??????????

Hand guns or pistols is just ok for the ordinary household.... semi-automatics are a no-no...

I am so glad I live in a country where this statement seems utterly unfathomable.

THIS.

EXACTLY

These nuts who do these shootings always chose locations where they know they will be the only one armed. Gun free zones are schools (Columbine, Virginia tech, Sandy Hook), office buildings, and now nightclubs.

No. Quite a few nightclubs are armed. Particularly security/bouncers. The security at Pulse had a gun. He was killed instantly.

Are you advocating that everyone be armed in schools?

What about the mass shootings that happened on military bases?

The NRA Myth of Gun-Free Zones

And btw, there's also a problem with regular shootings that occur all the time.

BINGO.

The "gun-free zone" thing is a bullshit myth...same with "if everybody had guns...".

Things are slowly getting back to normal for the rest of the city but not for us gays. All of us are still together and doing a ton of events, fundraising, and volunteering, but you can tell everyone is either numb, grief stricken, or scared to fucking death.

I wake up every morning and it's the first thing I think about. I'm slowly feeling better, but like everyone else, something is amiss with me right now

The lgbt community organized a vigil in Berlin tonight. The Brandenburg Gate was lit in the rainbow colors. Thousands attended. It was very impressive and sad at the same time.

same old same old :newspaper:

Senate rejects four gun-control measures after Orlando shooting

By Richard Cowan

June 20, 2016

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Monday rejected four measures restricting guns after last week's mass shooting in an Orlando nightclub, although lawmakers were still trying to forge a compromise that could keep firearms away from people on terrorism watch lists.

In a familiar setback for gun control advocates, all four of the measures to expand background checks on gun buyers and curb gun sales to those on terrorism watch lists - two put forth by Democrats and two by Republicans - fell short of the 60 votes needed for passage in the 100-member chamber.

The deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history last week had intensified pressure on lawmakers and spurred quick action, but the gun-control measures lost in largely party-line votes that showed the lingering political power in Congress of gun rights defenders and the National Rifle Association.

Republicans and their allies in the NRA gun lobby said the Democratic bills were too restrictive and trampled on the constitutional right to bear arms. Democrats attacked the Republicans' plans as too weak.

"It's always the same. After each tragedy, we try, we Democrats try to pass sensible gun safety measures. Sadly, our efforts are blocked by the Republican Congress who take their marching orders from the National Rifle Association," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said the Democratic measures were ineffective and Democrats were not sincere in their effort.

"Instead of using this as an opportunity to push a partisan agenda or craft the next 30-second campaign ad," McConnell said, Republican senators "are pursuing real solutions that can help keep Americans safer from the threat of terrorism."

Gun control efforts failed after mass shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012 and a conference center in San Bernardino, California, in 2015. But some senators see resistance to gun restrictions softening as national security looms larger in the debate.

The Orlando gunman, Omar Mateen, pledged allegiance to the militant group Islamic State as he killed 49 people in a gay nightclub.

"This country is under attack ... it's not a plane or an explosive device, it's an assault weapon," said Murphy, who led a 15-hour filibuster last week to draw attention to the effort to restrict guns.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted last week found that 71 percent of Americans favor at least moderate regulations and restrictions on gun sales. That compared with 60 percent in late 2013 and late 2014.

Senior Senate aides on Monday left open the possibility of other votes later in the week on unspecified gun control proposals. Some Republicans pinned hopes on a compromise proposal by Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, which was not one of the four bills being considered on Monday.

Her plan would restrict gun purchases to a narrow group of suspects, including those on a "no-fly" list or a "selectee" list of people who require additional screening at airports.

Even if the Senate approved a gun compromise, it would also have to be passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives. House Republican leadership aides did not comment on the possibility that any bills proposing gun restrictions would be considered on the House floor this week.

Congress has not passed new gun restrictions since a 2007 expansion of the government's automatic background check database to include individuals with a history of mental illness and felons. The United States has more than 310 million weapons, about one for every citizen.
