The blast occured in a park in the eastern city of Lahore, police have said.

Pakistani police said the nature of the blast was not clear.

"At least 38 people were killed and more than 100 are injured," Mustansar Feroz, superintendent of police for the area said.

"Most of the dead and injured are women and children."

Police said the nature of the blast was not clear but officers are investigating whether the attack was a suicide bomb.

Reports said the park was crowded due to the Easter holiday weekend.

Security personnel have reportedly surrounded the area and launched a search operation in and around the park.

Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation of 190 million people, is plagued by a Taliban insurgency, criminal gangs and sectarian violence.

The news comes just days after a suicide bomber killed 26 in a huge stadium bomb blast.

And last week terror attacks in Brussels killed 31 people and one British victim has now been confirmed.

The death toll is expected to rise as many of those injured are in a critical condition.

The area was crowded at the time because Christians were gathering to celebrate the Easter holiday.

Eyewitnesses said they saw body parts strewn across the parking lot once the dust had settled after the blast.

Many families were leaving the park when the blast occurred.

We live in the west. WE are lucky that if such an atrocity occurs against us it gets news media saturation 24/7 (see Brussels). Victims in Nigeria or elsewhere don't get the saturation in media that we get. Thankfully the internet is becoming the great equalizer.

#StandUpForNigeria (they don't have the same media voice that western victims have).

I can't take any more savage torturous news. An image of a baby staring starving to death in Jemen from yesterday still burns my mind. The saudi/american war against the rebels has awful consequences with so many people cut off from food and medicines.

The best way to stand up against this nonsense and cruelty is to read, read, read and understand. This way when politicians try to stir fears or nationalism we are vaccinated and can properly act.

Grasping our hair in Facebook or Twitter or praying for Brussels won't help anyway.
