Nike has severed its long-time sponsorship deal with famed Filipino boxer and lawmaker Manny Pacquiao after the athlete sparked outrage with anti-gay comments.

The 37-year-old world champion, who is running in May elections for a seat in the Philippines' Senate, told a local broadcaster that gay people were "worse than animals."

"It's just common sense. Do you see any animals of the same sex mating?" Pacquiao, who already has a House of Representatives seat, said.

He subsequently posted an apology to YouTube, saying that he was sorry for hurt he had caused, but also reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage, which is not permitted in the staunchly Roman Catholic country.

Nike, the world's largest apparel maker, cut ties with the boxer-turned-politician immediately.

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent," the company said in a statement.

Pacquiao had been with Nike for eight years, wearing shorts in the ring with the Nike swoosh.

Pacquiao's promoter-manager Bob Aram told CNBC that Nike did the right thing.

"Why would they want to offend the gay and lesbian community. They sell product to everyone," Aram said.

The legendary promoter said that while he did not agree with Pacquiao's comments, he understood where they came from. He explained that Pacquiao was a recent convert to evangelical Christianity.

"In the Philippines where he is running for senate, most of the people are against same-sex marriage," Aram said.

The list of athletes that Nike has cut ties with is small, but in recent years has grown.

The company most recently severed its relationships with running backs Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, sprinter Oscar Pistorious and cyclist Lance Armstrong.

"Nike and other brands today recognize that they aren't just talking to the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] community but millenials and the next generation," said Bob Witeck, CEO of Witteck Communications, which consults on LGBT issues.

Witeck said Nike's actions could set a new standard under which athletes were judged.

"Nike is a brand trailblazer and I expect others to follow their actions," he added.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Tim Bradley on Apr. 9 as part of the World Welterweight Championship on pay-per-view.

Aram said several sponsors who were ready to finalize their deals for the upcoming fight had since informed him they were no longer interested in being associated with the Filipino boxer.

But he doesn't expect the furore to have any impact on the number of people who tune in for what is likely to be Pacquio's last fight.

"What he said is offensive to a lot of people and that is very unfortunate," Aram said. "On the other hand, that's his religious belief. He has the right to articulate it. If it hurts him, so be it."

Nike terminates deal with boxing great

Nike has terminated its relationship with Manny Pacquiao after the six-weight world champion described homosexuals as "worse than animals".

The 37-year-old, who is running for a senate seat in his native Philippines, later apologised for his comments.

"We find Manny Pacquiao's comments abhorrent," said a Nike statement.

"Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community."

The sportswear company added: "We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao."

Pacquiao's original remark was made in a television interview and he initially appeared unrepentant, writing on Instagram that he was "just telling the truth of what the Bible says".

However, he later wrote on Facebook he was "not condemning LGBT", while still voicing his opposition for gay marriage.

Pacquiao, whose last fight was a defeat by Floyd Mayweather in May, is due to fight American Timothy Bradley Jr in Las Vegas in April.

British world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury apologised in December for criticising homosexuality, as well as derogatory remarks he made about women.

But boxing promoter Frank Warren told BBC Radio 5 live that the sport did not have a problem with homophobia.

"No matter what walk of life you come from there are bigots," said Warren. "I don't think it's a problem for boxing. In Tyson Fury's case I hope it was something he said on the spur of the moment. He regrets it.

"You can't condemn all of sport because of people's stupid remarks. They are two boxers out of many thousands of boxers.

"Pacquiao's certainly lost any type of sponsorship. That's all finished. No-one's ever going to sponsor him again.

"The majority of the fans will be totally abhorred about what he said, but that is going be the test - how many people decide they want to watch him fight."

World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is taking punches over comments he made to a Philippines media outlet describing gay people as "worse than animals." "It's common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female," Pacquiao told TV5 in an interview. "If men mate with men and women mate with women they are worse than animals." The eight-time boxing champion and born-again Christian is running for a Senate seat in his native country.

Usually people who come out with such statements are the biggest gays ever

And anyway, an animal has a lot more intelligence and discernment than this ridiculous steroid inflated excuse for a man

Worse than animals at what? Eating grass? Growing wool? :newspaper:

Fine, if something isn't for you, so be it, but no ones forcing you to look into a certain lifestyle or sexual act that you aren't interested in. If something disgusts you so much, move along... simple. It shouldn't really be a concern to you anyway. Why people care so much about what other consenting adults do or who someone loves is baffling.

Today german Federal Constitutional Court refused a constitutional complaint by 2 german sodomists. They wanted to have the right to have sexual contact with animals, e.g. dogs.

See, gays are not worse than animals. In general its the straights who pedophile or sodomise.

Uh, Manny, homosexual behavior and pairings have been scientifically observed in damn near every species in the animal kingdom.

Put down your book of fairy tales and take a science class bitch.

I'm surprised someone didn't point this out sooner! in all honesty i feel homosexuality, sexuality is part of all life, it's social if its not procreational. so anyone who has that much animosity doesn't really know who they really are

Hmmm, Nike dumping someone because they are holding a religious belief

Remember when they dumped someone because they apparently offended religious beliefs?

But seriously, what is with catholic conviction in the Phillipines? I think some Filipinos are more hardline than the Pope these days. M will sort them all out soon.

I don't want to generalize but I have quite a few Filipino friends and yeah, they're super traditional Catholic, especially when it comes to abortion. I'm assuming most of them will continue to support this person?
