Let me start by saying that this topic is NOT meant to bash Madonna.

But listening to the album and especially songs such as BIM, Holy Water, Inside Out and S.E.X. (my all-time fave guilty pleasure!!!) I can't help but wonder how Madonna would have felt about this album and these songs if she could have had a glimpse of the future let's say during 1990-2004.

Back then she was so proud of what she was doing, getting more serious as an artist and it paid off with huge sales for her ROL and Music albums. My guess is that American Life's flop ruined everything. She wanted to get back on top as soon as possible. I can't help but wonder how it would've turned out if AL had actually done good. One thing i know for sure, RIT wouldn't have been the Greatest Hits tour it was. Now she needed to remind the world of her back catalogue and then decided to return to pop with the disco oriented Confessions album. Thank God, because I love COADF. Hard Candy is where it really went wrong. From the extremely tacky cover to the average songs and weaker voice... Did she felt inspired by Britney? On songs such as Incredible, Dance 2night and Heartbeat she really sounds like Brit now and then. And then that crappy tour... S&S was the first time I felt Madonna made a complete fool of herself on stage. That whole 'a girlfriend that wanna fuck your boyfriend' crap... Madonna... hello... you're 50, not 15, but you damn sure sounded like a 15 year old when you asked the crowed that silly question.

I could go on and on, but I'll try to keep it short. After Confessions the woman who wasn't that much into collaborations and duets all of a sudden seemed addicted to them. The trend setter became a trend follower. Everything to appeal to a younger crowd who wants nothing to do with her, and in doing so, she's ignoring and alienating people that did grow up with her. This is her failure. Had these collabs at least paid off I wouldn't have mind that much, but they don't! Maybe Justin did okay, but the others... Let's be honest folks, what is BIM doing for her career? NOTHING!!! It's not a hit by any means.

I can't help but wonder why she keeps doing these kind of things. Yes, she should do whatever she wants. But do you guys really believe she is enjoying herself? The younger generation is only making jokes about her and will continue to do so. Why isn't she sticking to what she gained, a very loyal fanbase? Imagine how pathetic it would be if all of a sudden Bruce Springsteen would collaborate with Justin Bieber, releasing something like 'fuck you, I'm the Boss' or George Michael ft. Adam Lambert 'suck me, I'm gay'. Yes it would be hilarious, but they would be making fools of themselves. And I as a Madonna fan for almost 10 years hate to see her make a fool of herself. Yes, she achieved a lot, more than most of us ever will, but that does not mean she isn't making a fool of herself. We may enjoy these song but I think deep down inside most of us feel that she is making a fool of herself and hate it. She's our idol and we want her to shine, at least I do. But sorry... Hard Candy, Sticky and Sweet? MDNA? Rebel Heart? No matter how many times her last tours will (and continue to) be the best selling of all-time, she isn't really shining anymore. And no matter how many people claim Ray of Light is a boring album, GOD was she shining back then. She was on top and everyone wanted to follow her, but now... And this has nothing to do with me wanting a ROL pt. 2, since I don't want her to repeat herself. But that is exactly what she's doing for the last couple of years, repeating herself with desperate attempts to appeal to the younger generation.

Again, this is not meant to bash Madonna, just sharing how I feel. I still really like most of the RH album, but let's keep it and say it as it is.

Some perspective:

She is a female pop singer with 32 years under her belt.

People have long since stopped buying cassettes.

But in response 2 your question,

I called Madonna with my time traveling phone device...& I ended up talking 2 her in 1994. Her response was:

'I'm still doing albums in 2015!? That's amazing. I made how much money on my tours!?!?'

She got confused when I mentioned Itunes, and then she told me she had 2 go cuz

she was meeting Ingrid & Dennis Rodman 4 coffee.

Madonna couldn't have stayed doing dancey house music or housewife ballads in the 90s, she woulda become irrelevant super quick.

Madonna couldn't have kept doing the spiritual Esther thing in the late 00s, she woulda become irrelevant super quick.

And Madonna won't be able to keep doing the confrontational, age defying pop she's been doing since 2008. Rebel Heart started that transition. It's got some of her most mature work in a long time.

So I don't really understand your point. The Madonna of 1994 wouldn't even begin to fathom what she was even listening to back then. Music, technology, and people have changed so much.

She changes and evolves like anyone else. Personally, while I like RH, MDNA, and HC, I haven't been blown away by Madonna musically since 2005. But Im still fascinated by everything she does and I'm here for the ride. Trying to psychoanalyze her or deconstruct her music often takes the fun out of who she is. Her music is important of course but sometimes you just gotta listen to it knowing that it's pop, not Bjork or Grimes.

How in the world was Music a more serious album? Rebel Heart follows the same exact formula, ghetto Madonna + art + heart + AMAZING ballads

madonna-music-video-cap-0014.jpg

She was ready to pop out Rocco and pimping some filthy porn actresses, having the time of her life, not taking life so seriously after so many years of hanging out with bores like Sting and that one awful actress, something Paltrow. That's exactly what she's doing now.

Ugh, you're lucky I'm at work and I can't spend the time I'd like to to virtually bitch slap you right now

Oh, and I hate when people start their insults with "I'm sorry, but" "I don't want to be mean, but" "I'm not really racist, but"

"I'm not bashing Madonna, but..."

Also, there's absolutely nothing wrong with not liking something that Madonna did or does. Everyone knows Hard Candy did nothing for me and I got drunk at the Sticky and Sweet tour, I don't remember it and I never watched it. But seriously, we've had this discussion SO MANY FUCKING TIMES.

And what the fuck is up with this shit?

"I can't help but wonder why she keeps doing these kind of things. Yes, she should do whatever she wants. But do you guys really believe she is enjoying herself?"

bitch-Im-Madonna.gif

She's having the time of her LIFE. She's fucking models and smoking hot 20-something year olds like the boss ass bitch that she is and for the first time since probably forever she does not give a SHIT what you or the good old readers at the daily mail think about her!

You may call it a toxic way to live but I think Madonna is probably more energized at this point to be speaking out against ageist and sexist haters than in actually having another hit. What woman has ever had a major song at that age anyway ?

anyway, while i can underastand some of your points, and only some, you're contradicting yourself and making some mistakes in the process....RIT tour was a greatest his tour only because madonna let people think that...there was almost the full AL album on the setlist.... S&S tour a shit tour? only the 80s-new york section screams LIFE...and what about the epic masterpiece that's the mdna tour....what trend she's following with rebel heart then? don't you like one of the best album of her career (sorry papi...)? can you conceive how 30+ years of music is difficult to craft such a masterpiece? who else? yes...sometimes she makes some misteps...you never? and to make your point you bring 4 songs out of 456,25748 other songs on the album....

and, finally, BIM is LIFE too!!!!

in the end i don't understand this thread....but some like this pop up every now and then.....

If anything, I think Madonna is back to her true self. What she said in the Rolling Stone interview this year is very telling. She said that her marriage wasn't encouraging her to express her provocative, rebellious side. Now that she's divorced, she's able to be herself 100%.

She's not trying to remain youthful. She's defying society's rules of how a person of a certain age should act. There's a difference.

Hard Candy is amazing.

  • Finally, she decided to step away from the dancey/electronic thing and try something for a change. The sound of Hard Candy was new for her. She doesn't have to create a new genre of music with every album.
  • Working with underground producers can be overrated sometimes. If we're going to criticize that in Hard Candy, we might as well slag off Bedtime Stories. But we can't and we don't.
  • Sure, Timbo and Timber and Pharrell might have given pieces of their flavour to Madonna but it's unfair to say Madonna just accepted that with no say at all. Look at the lyrics of Candy Shop, 4 Minutes (an upbeat song about saving the world compared to most upbeat songs about booty, sex, dicks, and more sex), Give It 2 Me (pure Madonna), and Beat Goes On.
  • It's not right to say she didn't put a personal touch on the album. Have you listened to Miles Away? Incredible? Devil? Voices? These songs were reflective of what Madonna's life was like at that time.
  • Like Ai Papi said above, she can't keep doing the same thing over and over. She can't release another electronica album. She can't be overtly political or critical or Estherical all the time. She's had years being that. It was time for her landscape to change. It was time for her sugar pussy to take charge again.
  • The HC cover is pure Madonna. I'm surprised some fans dislike it.
  • Madonna has evolved as a person. I think during True Blue to Erotica she felt unstoppable. She was at the peak of her career and she had creative control. Then the backlash happened. She retreated, turned to introspection and religion to understand it all. By the American Life era, she was still introspective but was looking at the world as a different place by then. She's not a musician anymore. She wanted to get involved with world issues.
  • And I believed after going through that circle, Madonna has embraced that she needs to be connected with other people. She's getting older. She has children already. She's been on top of the world but nothing can match connectedness with other people. That's why we got Madonna working with with JT, Pharrell, Kanye, Katy, Miley, Nicki, and whoever is next. She's no longer the Erotica Madonna you adored. She's no longer the Ray of Light Madonna you worshipped. She's come down from it all and wants to have more people in her life. She's a human being for god's sake. I don't think there's anything wrong with her working with other musicians. It's what other people say about the humanised Madonna that's wrong anyway. People keep shoving her in a box where she's all alone but she's far gone from that already.

Vande, this is exactly what is said and written by Madonna ex fans constantly on other forums and social media. Although they deny being called ex-fans even though they admit to not really liking her or her music since ( take your pick ) Ray of Light, AL or Confessions. I perfectly understand and support anyone who did not like a certain album or does not like HC. Their view and perfectly entitled to it and to share it. But have no idea why people that obviously are over Madonna and have not liked anything for YEARS, keep coming to her forums and using the exact same terms such as "embarrassing, ruining her legacy, etc" and then say they are just keeping it real. I mean honestly, why bother ? Just move on if you have not liked her for that long and be content with the music and Madonna you once loved.

Madonna is from Detroit and she found herself on the streets of New York with junkies (she broke up with Basquiat, one of the greatest painters ever, because his heroin addiction got out of control), drag queens, eccentric gays, artists, bohemians, hipsters, intellectuals. That's who she is and who she'll always be. No matter how much money she makes or who she's rubbing shoulders with these days, or what society expects her to be.

For me, Ray of Light, the Evita First Lady Era and the British Tamed Housewife are all departures from who she really is. Some pretty amazing things came out of those eras, but it's not who she really is. She'll ALWAYS go back to being this chick

If you really thought Madonna was going to "mature", sit down, cover it up, "act her age", take the easy road and look like this

madonnachickens_wideweb__470x393,0.jpg

just turn in your Madonna fan card and give it up already.

You're probably one of those "fans" that jumped on board and discovered Madonna when you saw her catering to middle aged white women on Oprah with Ray of Light.

Just because Madonna is acting like a bad ass bitch nowadays, it doesn't mean that her current music is crap or juvenile. I can see why people dislike BIM or Holy Water but she has also made a smart decision by not letting Avicii produce half of the album with his EDM sound because THAT would have been a further step into artistic irrelevance.

Rebel Heart is a return to form musically and many fans and critics agree on that. It's not Madonna who has a problem but some of her fans because they expect her to to become Björk all of sudden and sell 20 million records with each release. Madonna is POP and she will always remain POP. ROL is the oddity in her discography, the song titles alone speak volumes. I'm glad she didn't bore us with faux-alternative albums for 15 years but instead gave us an eclectic mix of various music styles throughout the years. That's one of the reasons why she remained on top for so long.

Now with that said, I do agree with some parts of your post. If I could decide what she should do musically (and I can't) then I wish she would work with some obscure underground producer, hang out with bands like The Knife and James Blake and produce the most daring album in her career musically speaking. You know, reinventing herself like she used to.

But I like other singers who can fill that gap and that's why I will always be happy and grateful that Madonna has been here my whole life to satisfy my thirst for pop music.

And sorry ULIZOS, I love you and all but you're wrong here.

All the things she's ever done.. Evita, Ray of Light, lady of the manor.. they're all her. They're all exactly what she wanted to do and be at that point in time. No regrets and I'm not sorry.

She doesn't over-analyse it. Why should we?

You're just mad because your country temporarily turned Madonna into a boring pretentious woman.
