And for women. She fought peacefully for gays and women to be treated better and to have a voiice they didn't have. I’m not about to begin a conversation of the relative historical significance of Madonna and Mandela, but the latter never sent tweets comparing himself to. . . well. . . anyone. When Madge was burning crosses and cavorting with Sandra Bernhardt in the 80’s, she was invoking striking images to challenge powerful and dangerous social norms: the power of the church, and homophobia. So, it’s a little maddening and depressing to see modern Madonna pimping these images of history’s game-changers to flog records.
