"The Look Of Love"

Should have left you standing right where you stood
Should have let you go, should have had the sense to know
Like a train you'd come, and I'd lose my place
Now I'm on this trip, I took a fall from grace

[Chorus:]

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, from the eyes of pride
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

I've had a map laid out from the day I was born
But the roads are blocked, and the paper is worn
And all the books I've read, and the things I know
Never taught me to laugh, never taught to let go

[chorus]

My conscience is clear I know right from wrong
That's a lie I know nothing except that you're gone
But there's more to learn from the look in your eyes
That trip round this world, the stars in the sky

Now all the books I've read, and the things I know
Never taught me to live, never taught me to let go

[chorus]

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
From the look of love, Lord knows I've tried
Nowhere to go, no place to run
From the look of love, now I've come undone

(Nowhere to hide)
(No place to run)
(Nowhere to hide)
(No place to run)
This song from the Who's That Girl soundtrack was released as the 3rd single outside of the US and it stands in stark contrast to her other songs on that record. This one is much more understated and emotive and has a haunting and mysterious quality both in its melody and also in its beautiful lyrics. There seems to be a personal meaning in this song that goes deeper than just a song she wrote to be part of the film. I think unfortunately this song is overlooked and under-appreciated but it really shows her skills as a song writer and a singer - there is such a depth of emotion here. I'm so glad she performed this during the WTG tour as it deserved to be heard and it was an emotional highlight of the show. I love the ending when she seems to be struggling against an invisible force and then finally succumbs and gives in to it. Brilliant.
Favorite lyric: Now all the books I've read, and the things I know

Never taught me to live, never taught me to let go

Favorite Musical Moment: The fade out

Favorite Vocal Moment: The bridge

One Word That Sums Up This Song: Haunting

One of her most underrated songs. This song is pure magic. The latin vibes and the whole atmosphere makes it a gem. The WTG performance is one of the highlights for me. Very touching.

And this part:

My conscience is clear I know right from wrong

That's a lie I know nothing except that you're gone

But there's more to learn from the look in your eyes

That trip round this world, the stars in the sky

:wow: :wow: :wow:

Easily, my favorite ballad from the 80's.

*sigh*

It's one of my most played Madonna songs. I just wish her vocals were a bit louder. I find the music drowns it out...just by a little bit.

I love this song, it's easily one of my favorite ballad with live to tell and the power of goodbye. the performance where she's trying to push an invisible wall is life!! and the part you posted flip the switch, is gorgeous... Typical Madonna's bridge

Tiny thing though; doesn't she say,

"There's more to learn from the look in your eyes,

Than a trip round this world, or the stars in the sky..."?

That's what I always sang and thought maybe I have been hearing it wrong all these years!

It should be on Something to Remember

Definitely! It's a great haunting song, it's like live to tell part 2

Probably in my Madonna top 5. Absolutely adore it.

100% agree

In a 1991 ICON Magazine interview, Niki Haris said of all the songs she ever performed live with Madonna - her favourite was "The Look of Love".

  • When we got the Instrumental of this a couple of years ago I thought I was gonna pass out from pleasure and excitement.
  • Every time I watch the Miami WTG pro footage, I feel sick with disappointment when the first few bars of "The Look of Love" start and then the screen goes blank. We *need* another full WTG pro-shot concert more than almost anything else.
