The cold, unpolished production of the Erotica album: Can you appreciate it?

Recommended Posts

Erotica is the hippest Madonna album of them all. Before longing to start a family. Before caring again about commercial success. Madonna enjoyed the artistic journey and the price she paid for going too far destroying forever her image as a "role model". Before Erotica she was a reference for young women to explore their edgier/more sexual side. After Erotica, Madonna was the exclusive property of gay men and anyone else with taste.

I love minimalist production. When done well it is a timeless attribute of the approach. I hope Madonna returns to the intimacy of two or less producers. Aiming for a cohesive sound and theme. I love Erotica as a personal manifesto.

I love how afew of the titles play on the whole sexual innuendo thing. If you just read the titles only you would expect a sluttier affair.

Deeper and Deeper

Bad Girl

Why's It So Hard

Apart from Erotica and Where Life Begins it's not really that raunchy of an album.

Oh yes. As a kid I remember reading the titles on my way back home after getting the album and thinking "wow, I can't let my mom read this!".

A bar on holiday had the whole album on the jukebox so I couldn't resist but put it on ;)

How is Madonna currently the "exclusive property of gay men and anyone else with taste" and no a longer an important reference for young women? Admittedly I am a gay man so I don't have a woman's perspective, but Madonna is a still a huge icon for women and brought down major barriers for women to be comfortable expressing their sexuality and still be accepted by society. If anything, Erotica and the Sex book increased this because, as she talked a lot about at the time, she was tackling pornography and sexual themes as a woman fully in control of her work and art. She suffered from such a strong sexist backlash because her doing this deeply threatened the status quo. While of course she's not as big among young women today as stars like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, because they are still teenagers and young adults themselves, I know that a lot of women look to Madonna for inspiration and encouragement to express themselves freely when it comes to love and sex and feel empowered to challenge society's conventions.

I could have worded it better. My point was commercially and artistically from then on. She would be ours (gay men and anyone with taste). Watching Truth or Dare reminded me that Madonna was still be marketed to kids. While the Sex/Erotica/Body of Evidence/Girlie Show were all adults only product. And the music she made afterwards were all geared toward adults. She certainly was not chasing teenagers then.

Madonna was still a huge teen idol through the mid 90's at least. She was still written and talked about in all of the teen magazines for most of the early/mid 90's. A lot of her fans had drown up with her by that point, but she was still making pop much that was appreciated by the masses.

In some ways, I'll Remember/Bedtime Story album /Something To Remember compilation/Evita were clear ways where she tried to regain the adoration of the general public after they had deserted her during the Sex/Erotica backlash. With most of the projects between Erotica and ROL, she was making music that was hip for that time (ballads and R&B/hip-hop inspired pop songs). It was still the same Madonna, but she seemed to at least partly admit she may have taken it too far, and retreated a bit and started the process of being more and more "safe."

It really wasn't until ROL where was able to finally shed the last remnants of the backlash that had plagued her public person for most of the mid 90's, and of course she seemed to gain a new audience during that timeframe and reconnected with casual fans from the 80's/early 90's.

I have to say though, In this Life is probably one of my most disliked Madonna songs. Talk about boring snooze-worthy. I get the message behind it, but the song itself isn't easy for me to listen to,

Oh, definitly. It's the low-point of the album BUT the Girlie Show performance gave it new life :wow:

It was never a low point for me. I love the production of it. It has theatricality to it.

Erotica is my favorite Madonna album bar none!! It was the first CD I ever bought and that's when CD's still came in those long boxes. I remember it had Erotica in like purple letters on top and and the album cover without any writing on the bottom half of the box The fucker was like $20 including tax and cost me a month's allowance. I was the happiest 11 year old gay dude on the block!! :tigger::headbang:

I think the career transition from LIke A Prayer to Erotica is the one that most of the pop starlets have been trying to copy. I mean if you listen to Britney's "In The Zone," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Christina Aguilera's "Stripped," Rihanna's "Talk That Talk," or even Beyonce's latest album; you can really tell that they wanted to capture that rawness or grittiness that Erotica had. It was the perfect template.

I LIVE FOR DID YOU DO IT

I know the whole rap. In fact, I used to have an MP3 of DYDI & Waiting mixed together.

:tigger:

Madonna did Hip-Hop before Mariah!

:order:

Oh and can you give us the full lyrics???

do you mean these?

Tell me

We're gonna do it after we finish?

Ya whazzup

We're gonna do it after we finish?

Tick tick tock, Mo is on the jock

I did her in the limo as we went around the block

Sucked the mole on her hip

Licked the lipstick off her lip

She got real excited, yo she started to flip

She says 'Dre baby 'Dre baby oh

I said just relax, yo chill Mo

We made a right turn onto Central Park West

One hand gripped the car, the other on her breast

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

I let the seat recline and I hit it

Did you do it? I said I did it

Did you do it? I said I did it

Did you do it? I said I did it

But I backed out quick because I thought I split it

Waiting for you, just waiting

Waiting for you

Waiting for you, just waiting

Waiting for you

Uh Ho's in the front for the 1990's

Walkin' around showing off their hinies

Wigglin' they're jigglin' they're swingin' and flingin'

9-7-0 Yo Ho, your phone's ringin'

You get a call from your John, you meet him at the mot'

He's chillin' in a pamper and a fur coat

Your head starts spinnin', you drunk too much gin in

Your jaw starts grinnin', and this is the beginnin'

Of a night of an average Ho

It ain't all about working on the streets no more

Here's another episode of dropping off a load

Peter was on the beater, I was about to explode

I couldn't hold back (so whadya do)

I took her to my place (Yo did she sit on your face)

She was so good just like uh, Campbell's soup

I won't try to front so here's the rude scoop

I dipped it and I stripped it and I ripped it like before

I had her screamin', nope no diddily, nope no more

I can't stop once I get started

But yo honey, uh get them legs parted

Waiting for you, just waiting

Waiting for you

Waiting for you, just waiting

Waiting for you

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

I let the seat recline and I hit it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

But I backed out quick because I thought I split it

They come with the rough stuff, boy we hit it, split it and forget it

In the same order as ya hear, boy I'm not frontin' (me not front)

Don't ask what, me tell ya the truth, you understand me eye

The iron eye can get busy, you know what I'm saying

Clean up me rifle, clean up me rifle

Clean up me rifle, me elephant rifle

Clean up me rifle, you clean up me rifle

Clean up me rifle, elephant rifle

I flipped her from the top of my head, enough said

I'm the brother with the short short dreads

A couple different styles, a couple different 'fros

Just some that my souls about some girls I know

I gotta hit it hard because I go for the gusto

And I cover up the moans by turnin' up my stereo

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

Did you do it? Ya know I did it

I let the seat recline and I hit it

Did you do it? Yo, ya know I did it

Did you do it? I said I did it

Did you do it? Yo

I backed out quick because I thought I split it

You didn't do it

He didn't do it

I made her go

Waiting for you, just waiting

(Man she's been waiting)

Waiting for you

(Yeah she can keep on waiting)

Waiting for you, just waiting

(She's been waiting and you have not hit it)

Waiting for you

Waiting for you, just waiting

Waiting for you

The thing with Erotica is I mostly ignore the Andre Betts collaborations. i guess Madonna did too, seeing as none of them were singles. I know Secret garden is popular among fans, i like it and it is the bess among the M/ Betts songs. But let's face it Erotica is mostly Madonna & Shep's. I also completely agree with what someone else said previously, I think f this as her divorce album. I really see this and the sex book as her reaction to her marriage ending and her working out her anger over that. There is brilliance in the production. the alternating vocals from left to right speakers and different vocal take son each speaker. For example, the bridge in BYe BYE baby, they are 2 completely different vocal takes, on top of each other and if you isolate one over the other, you'll hear they are different vocal takes.

very interesting how detail oriented that album was.

Yesterday I was listening to the album and got really curious about the last line of Secret garden:

"Somewhere in Fontainebleau

Lies my secret garden"

I googled Fontinebleau and "is a commune in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. (...)Fontainebleau is renowned for the large and scenic forest of Fontainebleau, a favourite weekend getaway for Parisians, as well as for the historical Château de Fontainebleau, which once belonged to the kings of France." (god bless wikipedia)

Sounds like she really likes that place, does anyone know the story behind this?

Madonna was asked about Fontainebleau in 2005 when she was in France and she said that its about a guy named Daniel who was smart and sexy..

Oh well, I thought it was something more deep, silly me :chuckle:

Guest bluejean

I think the reason why everyone loves that song is because it's one of her most lyrically revealing. It's like the more subdued cousin of Rescue Me.
