Madonna enjoyed the artistic journey and the price she paid for going too far destroying forever her image as a "role model". Before Erotica she was a reference for young women to explore their edgier/more sexual side. After Erotica, Madonna was the exclusive property of gay men and anyone else with taste. I love minimalist production. When done well it is a timeless attribute of the approach. I hope Madonna returns to the intimacy of two or less producers. Aiming for a cohesive sound and theme. Deeper and Deeper Bad Girl Why's It So Hard Apart from Erotica and Where Life Begins it's not really that raunchy of an album. Oh yes. Admittedly I am a gay man so I don't have a woman's perspective, but Madonna is a still a huge icon for women and brought down major barriers for women to be comfortable expressing their sexuality and still be accepted by society. If anything, Erotica and the Sex book increased this because, as she talked a lot about at the time, she was tackling pornography and sexual themes as a woman fully in control of her work and art. She suffered from such a strong sexist backlash because her doing this deeply threatened the status quo. While of course she's not as big among young women today as stars like Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, because they are still teenagers and young adults themselves, I know that a lot of women look to Madonna for inspiration and encouragement to express themselves freely when it comes to love and sex and feel empowered to challenge society's conventions. Madonna was still a huge teen idol through the mid 90's at least. She was still written and talked about in all of the teen magazines for most of the early/mid 90's. A lot of her fans had drown up with her by that point, but she was still making pop much that was appreciated by the masses. In some ways, I'll Remember/Bedtime Story album /Something To Remember compilation/Evita were clear ways where she tried to regain the adoration of the general public after they had deserted her during the Sex/Erotica backlash. With most of the projects between Erotica and ROL, she was making music that was hip for that time (ballads and R&B/hip-hop inspired pop songs). It was still the same Madonna, but she seemed to at least partly admit she may have taken it too far, and retreated a bit and started the process of being more and more "safe." It really wasn't until ROL where was able to finally shed the last remnants of the backlash that had plagued her public person for most of the mid 90's, and of course she seemed to gain a new audience during that timeframe and reconnected with casual fans from the 80's/early 90's. I remember it had Erotica in like purple letters on top and and the album cover without any writing on the bottom half of the box The fucker was like $20 including tax and cost me a month's allowance. I mean if you listen to Britney's "In The Zone," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Christina Aguilera's "Stripped," Rihanna's "Talk That Talk," or even Beyonce's latest album; you can really tell that they wanted to capture that rawness or grittiness that Erotica had. I know Secret garden is popular among fans, i like it and it is the bess among the M/ Betts songs. But let's face it Erotica is mostly Madonna & Shep's. I also completely agree with what someone else said previously, I think f this as her divorce album. I really see this and the sex book as her reaction to her marriage ending and her working out her anger over that. There is brilliance in the production. the alternating vocals from left to right speakers and different vocal take son each speaker. For example, the bridge in BYe BYE baby, they are 2 completely different vocal takes, on top of each other and if you isolate one over the other, you'll hear they are different vocal takes. very interesting how detail oriented that album was. (...)Fontainebleau is renowned for the large and scenic forest of Fontainebleau, a favourite weekend getaway for Parisians, as well as for the historical Château de Fontainebleau, which once belonged to the kings of France."
