Forbes Celebrity 100 Preview: Sorry, Madonna, You Didn't Make This Year's List. Here's Why.

Last year, Madonna ranked fifth on our Celebrity 100 list with an estimated $125 million in earnings between June 2012 and June 2013 and strong marks in our metrics designed to quantify fame. This year, she won’t make the list. Fans might ask: How can that be?

In one word: touring. It used to be that bands toured to goose sales of their albums. But there’s no money left in music sales. Now bands release albums to get people into giant stadiums to drop hundreds of dollars on tickets and merchandise. During the time frame for last year’s list, the Material Girl had an incredibly successful tour that netted her more than she’s earned in any given year since we started the Celebrity 100 in 1999.

But with her world tour behind her, Madonna’s earnings dropped precipitously this year. That meant she couldn’t compete with bands that had more money and more fame.

But Madonna fans shouldn’t despair. The singer has appeared on seven Celebrity 100 lists in the last 14 years. Since her first appearance on the list in 2002, she’s never disappeared for more than two years. When Madonna tours, the whole world flocks to see her. Once she gets back on the road, expect her to also return to the Celebrity 100.

I'm just wondering why they're singling her out whenever there is something negative (although this isn't like their usual stuff about her). Writing a piece about her not making the list is kind of silly, when I'm sure that this has happened to many other people, but Forbes isn't bothering writing articles about them not making it.

Exactly what I was thinking.

They wouldn't bother with an article like this if it was anyone else.

^Exactly. They're using her name to get more article views and comments. I haven't taken the time to look but I doubt they do a "sorry, whoever!" article like this when anyone else moves position or isn't on the list after being on it a previous year? Regardless they're not reporting anything inaccurate so whatev.

I wonder how much her Material Girl line makes her. It seems to be doing well.

We don't know...and neither do they...which is why she's not on the list probably.

Their lists are always so stupid.

Besides...they hated the fact she was so high last year...do you guys still remember how they dragged her on their articles like it was all a big luck she was there? they are always so negative towards her it's not even funny!

Of course they HAD to say this this year XD

We really don't need to discuss those articles from Forbes anymore. The may have an agenda. Remember the article a year or two ago when they felt the need to explain why Madonna isn't a billionaire and deliberately only counted her "income" from 2001 or so. As if she never made a dime before that. In addition they argued that she had so many expenses and extremely high taxes that around 65% of every dollar she earns is gone. Extremely high income taxes in the U.S. when you are a millionaire? Really? And of course they hardly ever acknowledge any of her investments, whether this may be one of her ventures, properties or art or royalties. Of course not, since they have no access to this information. Although it is strange since it never hindered them to guestimate the net worth of those rappers who are incredibly rich because of their investments and holdings. Not so much because of their music. Anyway. What about the fact that she owns or co-owns the publishing rights to almost all her songs. A catalogue of songs that rivals the ones of Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. The value of this catalogue is estimated at least 100 million dollars. Good thing, all comments in the article rip the author a new one for the lazy journalism and calling them out for deliberately leaving information out to diminish Madonnas achievements. I can't help to wonder if this is still rooted in the Forbes article from 1990 or 91 when they were singing praises of her business sense and she in return hated the article and said Forbes knows shit.

Can't they just sum up her published income since 1983? I mean, if she earns $100M in a year, chances are it will be put into investments or properties that the worth remains to be part of her asset and fortune anyway...

look how ridiculous this list it...

Does anyone have a complete compilation of her FORBES placings since 1999?

2007 - $72m

2008 - $40m

2009 - $110m

2013 - $124m

From these figures alone she's at $346M... I can't how MARIAH could be at $500m and MADONNA is below $350 in that ignorant list...

please stop criticizing Forbes as clearly M fans don't accept other people opionions and everyone is entitled to bash Madonna but not to defend her on a forum dedicated to her and blah blah blah accordingly to some posters here :smug:

Although Forbes has a history of diminishing M's accomplishments, i think the article is justified by the fact she was at the top of the list last year with a massive amount of money earned.

i wonder though how accurate Forbes really is? with all business ventures + royalties she gets is she not even in the top100? not that i remotely care but i wonder if the managment needs to submit the infos to Forbes to be on the list...or they just calculate it in base on all informations they have?

Its probably based on the public information like tour gross and im sure some artists submit stuff too

Forbes doesn't count her investments because they don't know what they are. They don't count the "Material Girl" product line because they don't know what it earns. They don't count her music royalties because they don't have any idea what that ads up to. Forbes is ignorant.

So Madonna still holds the record for most money made in a single year for a female musical performer with $125 million made, ladt year

Beyonce is now #2 with $115 million made this year

Followed by Madonna again with $110 million in 2009

I also call bullshit on Pariah being worth anywhere close to $500 million, she is NEVER on any of the Forbes lists.

I think the last year she made it was 2007, but even then Madonna destroyed her fat ass in earnings that year!
