It is based on the Early Cyrillic, which was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire during the 9th century AD at the Preslav Literary School. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_script Its true, the cyrillic alphabeth was devised in Bulgaria by (most probably) a very famous medieval Bulgarian saint, scholar, writer and enlightener of the Slavs - Clement Of Ohrid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_of_Ohrid. The first written slavic language was actually Old Bulgarian, see here: Old Bulgarian (9th to 11th century, also referred to as Old Church Slavonic) – a literary norm of the early southern dialect of the Common Slavic language from which Bulgarian evolved. elijah Posted May 27, 2014 Share Posted May 27, 2014 I think its common knowledge that cyrillic was invented in Bulgaria, but I guess most people mistake it for Glagolic which was invented by the Byzantine brothers Cyrill and Methodius.
