Madonna's art collection: what works of art does she own?

Recommended Posts

As an avid art collector myself...this is thread of the YEAR! Thank you everyone.

I remember there was an article in the late 90s/early 00s that listed the most valuable private art collections and she was on the list.

Knowing the art market, I'm sure she owns at LEAST $150 million in art from what I've seen alone (and we haven't seen the Warhols).

Does she still own her wedding gift Andy and Warhol gave her?

If she does own it, she must have lowned it out, I think ... because I saw that this was going to be on exhibit in the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh... OR ... well, I could be mistaken. They had some sort of Haring/Warhol piece with Madonna on it. I think it was similar to this, but with a different photo of M. I think it might have been a traveling exhibit.

(This is a great thread, by the way. And I love the interview posted -- I've read it a handful of times over the years. Not enough time tonight, but I'll look forward to reading it again soon. Thanks for re-posting it.)

Edit: Duh. I was looking at the one on the right, held by Warhol. The one on the left, held by Keith, is the one that was pictured in the local newspaper here.

Looks like she donated them to the Keith Haring Foundation and the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg respectively.

This picture from the Architectural Digest article from November 1991 shows a 1930 Fresson print titled Nude by French phtotographer Laure Albin-Guillot hanging near the entrance of her former Harperley Hall apartment in New York.

And a lot of unknown pictures on the walls in the hallway leading away from that entrance!

Huge painting hanging on the wall in M's former Hollywood home Castillo del Lago. Is it Bouguereau? Tiepolo?

interior-design-4.jpg

UPDATED:

This painting is by French Neoclassical painter Jérôme Martin Langlois (1779-1838). It's called "Diane et Endymion" (ca. 1822) and was originally commissioned for the Palace of Versailles. Below a bigger picture of the painting. It was bought by Madonna at Sotheby's on 24th of October 1989.

Paintings on the walls of Madonna's former Miami home as featured in World of Interiors in 1994. On the near wall a painting by Tiepolo and on the far wall a painting by Bouguereau. Who knows the titles? They were explicitly mentioned in the magazine article, but I don't have a copy of that nearby.

Thanks to everyone posting info and pics in this fabulous thread. I've always been fascinated with Madonna's art / design / décor preferences. That art interview posted on the first page of this thread is one of my all time favorites. Her mind and unique culture is what sets her miles apart from anyone else.

This painting looks familiar. It has followed our heroine through several moves around LA. Has it now finally found it's way to the East Coast? I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I do not know the artist. Who does? Tell us more!

First pic: on the wall of the Oriole Way home (Vogue 1989)

Second pic: Above a bed - M's bed? - in what I believe to be a picture taken at Harperley Hall apartment in New York.

Third pic: although not the focus of this picture, the painting succeeds in making the cut on the left-hand side in this shot at the Castillo del Lago home in LA.

Fourth pic: the best so far :chuckle: The artwork hangs over Lourdes' play table at M's former LA home on Roxbury Drive, bought in 2000 from actress Diane Keaton. Lourdes could probably reach it with ease! Spot the difference between Lola's works of art and the one on the wall. It turns out that this work of art is by FERNAND LEGER, entitled simply "Composition" (1932).

It looks like it could be a Kandinsky, but I'm not sure

Was just about to say this.

Looks like one of his compositions.

Madonna should keep a link to this thread to help her keep track of all the places her painting gave hung.

^^^ Some days ago there was this Haring docu on television and they had this segment when Madonna sang Dress you Up for Keith on his birthday at Paradise Garage. Some dancer / Choreographer recalls that he didn't think she was something special and Keith walked over to him to tell him that Andy Warhol told him she would become the biggest star the universe has ever seen. :wow:
