Big shifts in Live Nation! Oseary to take over the day-to-day management of U2

Live Nation Said to Be Near Deal for Management Companies By BEN SISARIO Published: November 12, 2013

Live Nation Entertainment, the giant concert company that includes Ticketmaster, is in advanced negotiations to buy the management companies behind U2 and Madonna, according to several people with direct knowledge of the talks.

If the deal is consummated, it will further strengthen Live Nation’s already deep ties with U2 and Madonna, two of the highest-earning and most durable pop acts of the last 30 years. As part of the deal, Live Nation would pay more than $30 million for both Principle Management, the company of U2’s longtime manager, Paul McGuinness, as well as Maverick, run by Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, according to these people, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they were not authorized to discuss the deal publicly.

In what would be one of the most surprising shifts in years among the forces behind pop megastars, Mr. Oseary, 41, would take over the day-to-day management of U2. Mr. McGuinness, 62, who has managed U2 almost since its inception — and in doing so became one of the most highly esteemed executives in the music business — would become Principle’s chairman, with a role that was not fully clear.

A spokeswoman for Live Nation declined to comment, and Mr. Oseary could not be reached Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement, Mr. McGuinness said: “It could be seen as slightly poor etiquette for a manager to consider retiring before his artist has split, quit or died, but U2 have never subscribed to the rock and roll code of conduct. As I approach the musically relevant age of 64 I have resolved to take a less hands-on role as the band embark on the next cycle of their extraordinary career. I am delighted that Live Nation, who with Arthur Fogel have been our long term touring partners, have joined us in creating this powerful new force in artist management. I have long regarded Guy Oseary as the best manager of his generation and there is no one else I would have considered to take over the day-to-day running of our business.”

According to Pollstar, a concert industry trade magazine, the top 10 highest-grossing tours include four by U2 and one by Madonna. U2’s last tour, called 360, had more than $700 million in ticket sales and was seen by nearly seven million people around the world.

Live Nation, which besides its concert promotion and ticketing business manages the careers of some 200 acts through its Artist Nation division, has had close ties with both U2 and Madonna for years. In 2007, it struck a $120 million deal with Madonna that covered touring and recorded music rights for a decade, and it later sold the recording rights to Universal. In 2008, it made a deal with U2 to handle the band’s touring and merchandising exclusively for 12 years.

Along with other arrangements Live Nation made around that time with Jay Z, Shakira and Nickelback, those deals came to symbolize a major change in the music business, as artists looked to concerts, merchandise and myriad other outlets to make up for lost record sales.

So what does this mean for Madonna? Is Guy going to be able to manage her and U2 at the same time?

that's why I opened a new topic. we can't tell yet, can we? maybe she'll get another manager to help guy out, maybe guy will stop managing madonna (which i really doubt), maybe it'll change some things elsewhere.. i guess we could see some U2 "red" gyms in the future ;)

In my opinion, it means that if U2 are planning to release an album followed by a tour in the next coming months, we prob won't be getting a Madonna album for another year.

There's no way Guy would be splitting his time between 2 different eras tours.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Guy can still 'oversee' everything, while other managers, like this Sara Zambreno(?) that Madonna often mentions, take on the more day-to-day tasks. Guy wasn't doing it completely alone either all this time.

I say BRAHIM takes over Madonna's management.

Joking.

But I'm not joking when I say: Bye, bye, Guy. You've been good, you've been bad, you've been the man behind the Candy Shop. Hopefully we won't miss you.

But wasn't he at every MDNA show? And every Sticky show?

Probably because at that time, he was only managing Madonna. Many artists have more than one manager anyway... usually a head manager, and a few others, plus assistants. Guy works with that Sara lady, and I'm sure a few others that work under him...all for Madonna.

Not to mention, if he did decide to move on, Madonna is Madonna...she probably has access to the best in the business. Whoever she wants...

^ As there should be someone who's there all the time. I think it was Madonna herself who encouraged Oseary to expand his horizons.

Madonna took a young Oseary under her wing and asked him to embark on a journey with her. Now he is a force in the entertainment industry in his own right.

Madonna had and still has the reputation of using people and then discarding them when they outlived their usefulness. Which to me is undeserved. With Oseary (and with other examples), Madonna proves she elevates people or give them opportunities to spread their wings or fly higher. All her producers became big names after they worked with her. And dump people who are not doing what they're supposed to, not only with their jobs but with their lives (ex., Camille Barbone, Caresse Henry, Basquiat, etc.).

Oh, I dunno if this Live Nation/U2 thing is a promotion for Oseary, though.

Madonna is not Guys only act either. Plus he has Sara, the oriental woman (sorry forgot her name) Colleen etc that could all be more hands on. It isn't just Guy alone.

As long as she's under good management it's all good. We don't want another gap, me against the music, remixed and revisited fiasco.

What happened with all these people?

Guy Oseary's been stuck to Madonna's side everywhere she went, now he won't be able to do that anymore. I know we may not agree with his nontraditional ways but I just hope this doesn't mean even shittier management for Madonna from now on.

It would be really interesting if M had a new great manager to bring in some fresh new ideas.

I agree.Guy has been a great manager all these years, for the most part, but a new manager could take things to the next level for Madonna. When it comes to promotion and marketing,Madonna could use some new, fresh ideas.

Camille Barbone is a lesbian who may had been in love with Madonna and, seduced by Madonna (according to Camille, lol), she became Madonna's 1st manager when Madonna struck on her own as a solo artist. But Camille was too slow to deliver the deal (a major label contract) and wanted the exasperated Madonna to be a Pat Benatar clone, so Madonna promptly dumped her. Camille was bitter about it for a loong time.

Basquiat, of course as you know, was THE premiere black artist (a Warhol protege/friend) who recently had a painting of his sold for over $20m. He had a legendary relationship with Madonna in the early 80s and whom Madonna left because of his addiction to hard drugs. He was devastated. He OD'd on drugs and died shortly after Warhol died. (btw, Madonna supposedly had a cat fight with his jealous ex! So dramatic  )

Caresse was Madonna's longtime assistant then manager. She allegedly broke Madonna's rules on drug use and relationships with coworkers (like that midget trainer friend of high and mighty princess Gwyneth) and so Madonna supposedly fired her. She died from drug-related causes, perhaps suicide. Of course, the media portrayed Madonna as the cold bitch who probably helped drive the helpless Caresse to kill herself.

Those are the details i can recall. If there's a mistake, ask Pud, he's our M history expert :)
