2016 Presidential Election Thread

What happened to Bobby Jindal? I never liked him, but he was being touted as the Republican's next great hope in 2009, and now he's completely out of steam, no one talks about him, and he wasn't even on the main debate stage with those other clowns.

We call him Kermit the frog from his look to his vocal cords

Well Madonna fans tend to be very left wing or at least the loudest ones seem like they are online. Find it difficult to relate to political discussions within my own family and even my closest friends because they are so left wing. Try to be a centrist politically even though I'm a life long democratic and will NEVER vote Republican until there are more moderate candidates. Don't like identity politics or the victim mentality of some on the left and hate religious fundamentalism and pocketing the rich assholes on the right.

I don't think most Madonna fans are very left wing. I think they are Democrats and liberal and support President Obama for the most part. Since he was elected twice, I think supporting him is pretty much in the mainstream. Very left wing would to me be socialist or communist or something like that which I don't see much online.

I don't understand the "identity politics or victim mentality" thing. There is still racism, sexism and homophobia so I don't see anything wrong with pointing that out.

There will never be moderate candidates at least ones that win because the people that vote in the Republican primaries are the most conservative and religious. Look at this campaign. The more moderate Republicans are Pataki, Graham, Kasich and Christie and they are way at the bottom with little or no support.

They don't realise how radical the Republican party has become.

It's a "radical insurgency", says Chomsky:

http://www.democracynow.org/2015/9/22/noam_chomsky_on_trump_we_should (video)

The Republicans have just drifted off the spectrum. They’re so committed to extreme wealth and power that they cannot get votes, can’t get votes by presenting those positions. So what has happened is that they’ve mobilized sectors of the population that have been around for a long time.(...). One is it’s extremely religious. It’s one of the most extreme fundamentalist countries in the world. And by now, I suspect the majority of the base of the Republican Party is evangelical Christians, extremists, (...), nativists who are afraid that, you know, "they are taking our white Anglo-Saxon country away from us," people who have to have guns when they go into Starbucks because, who knows, they might get killed by an Islamic terrorist and so on. I mean, all of that is part of the country, and it goes back to colonial days.

I really don't think people understand what extreme left or right actually means. Honestly, there is no extreme right or left in the U.S. What's happening in the U.S. is that the right is moving further to the right which is VERY alarming. Historically speaking this always happens whenever a country experiences economic downturns and other setbacks (think post WWI Germany) and the reason I find it to be so alarming and I agree with the person up there who said republicanism is the biggest threat in America is that these types of things happen and people don't even notice it before it's too late (again, think Hitler).

As an example, I just googled "political spectrum" and this is what some people in the U.S. are saying is the extreme right:

untitled.png

This is so WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG. Fascism is the extreme right and anarchism doesn't really even fall in this spectrum! There are people out there who are SO brainwashed that they think the extreme right means TOTAL FREEDOM. This makes me want to punch something. These idiots think "small efficient government" means extreme right when that has NOTHING to do with far-right politics. Anyone can implement a smarter, more efficient government regardless if they're right or left!

The GOP is clearly misleading people and people are so, so, so brainwashed. If they knew they were slowly moving closer into Hitler territory I don't think everyone would be on board, but they are so brainwashed that even if you try to explain this to them they'll just start spewing pure unadulterated bullshit.

And the reason why I post this is because someone up there is talking about how he disagrees with the extreme left in America even though he's a democrat? I mean, seriously, who the fuck is saying the U.S. government should take over every aspect of our industry and we should do away with capitalism as we know it and redistribute the country's wealth evenly among every citizen? Why in the world would anyone think that it is extremely left to saying, hey rich people, you guys got massive tax cuts back BEFORE September 11th and we're not doing so good anymore, we're gonna raise your taxes by a few percentage points again? How in the world does universal healthcare the same as 1960's Russia?!??!?!?! We're all so mislead nobody is even sure what we're fighting for or against anymore.

Another example of how the GOP is misleading and brainwashing the american people to get what they want: people now universally think Obamacare is the extreme left. Even democrats and liberals call the Affordable Care Act "extreme left."

Um, Obamacare in a nutshell means that everyone needs to take personal responsibility for their own health and pay for their own PRIVATE (capitalist) health insurance, and the government steps in to help our country's most vulnerable people who can't cover these expenses on their own for whatever of a list of reasons through tax breaks, medicare coverage, etc. This is a centrist program with certain socialist elements to it. THERE'S NOTHING EXTREME LEFT ABOUT IT. Ugh

End of rant, thanks for listening.

I also love how they act like Obamacare is this EXTREME thing, when years ago it was initially by and large the idea of republicans!

Obamacare might be a step in the right direction, but it is also a MUCH watered down version of what we should have gotten which is a universal single payer healthcare system.

Didn't Hillary initially say she was NOT going to run for presidency this time around?

Absolutely and many times! Her blatantly indifferent demeanor shows she is NOT feeling it even w/ it basically being given to her. Couldnt be more apparent she had NO choice. She wanted the hell out it all after 2012. She's running an atrocious campaign. I (like many here was *all for her in 2007) but she's beyond tired and painful to watch now. 2004 and 2007 were her time. It's passed. I def. think she's beatable. The Dems better have a super plan B like...now! I have a feeling they're on it 24/7 right now and many people aren't sleeping for days.

I really like Bernie Sanders but he is not a general election candidate in any way. He's getting Warrens votes- simple as that. I'm meh about Biden but would def. prefer a younger, flamboyant, smart, mega successful biz. man like Marc Cuban or the like. There's not much time but if someone comes out of the woodwork in the next month or two it could def. happen.

Again, as recently as 2011-2013 (w/ that long hippy, un kept hair) Hilary was already checking the hell out and consistently saying in every friggin interview she was NOT running for president in 2016 lol!

I see thanks

Totally agree! I think we should have universal health care/single payor. Donald Trump of all people at one time was all for this, but now that he's a Republican he dropped that!

Universal healthcare as we know it in Canada and several other countries is a program based on socialist, leftist ideologies. It's NOT the extreme left. But Republicans have done such a brilliant job at brainwashing Americans that the vast majority think it's a far-left, communist DANGEROUS program

It will never happen in our lifetimes. The best we could do was Obamacare and apparently that was too left for America.

BRILLIANT RANT. Couldn't agree more with everything you said.

Just look at the reaction people have when they hear Bernie Sanders is a socialist: they automatically freak out, as if it's an insult. They don't even KNOW what socialism mean anymore. You're right, the right wing has done a brilliant job at convincing a lot of Americans that things that are actually good for the country (and for the world) are these evil horrible things that need to be eradicated.

And as you said, they're really entering into Hitler territory at this point. I talked about it with friends a few weeks ago, i told them that when i see the modern day Republican party, i see how the Nazi Party was at the beginning. America need to wake the fuck up and take the Republicans away from power or something REALLY sinister is going to happen at some point.

Moment of the night!!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xY-rRIHNclk

It was so nice hearing people running for office talking about REAL issues, instead of nothing but building a wall to keep out Mexicans and keep out "scary" Muslims. Though the two at either end made little impact, at least they were all adults on that stage acting like adults.

Such a difference from the circus GOP debates.

Hillary really rocked the debate last night. She came up as well informed, poised and even funny. The debate confirmed my opinion of Bernie. While I agree with his opinions, I don't think he has the leadership qualities to be President. He came off as strident, kind of grumpy and kind of disheveled in both appearance and presentation.

CNN's Tuesday night debate averaged 15.3 million viewers, easily making it the highest-rated Democratic debate ever.

Happy people tuned in to watch adults debate real issues facing Americans.

I was afraid it was going to get low ratings because it wasn't going to be the clown show that drew so many viewers to the republican debate.

Martin O'Malley is very hot !!

Take me daddy............................................!

I think the poor other two on the left and right should just bow out now. Actually its obvious this is a Hillary/Sanders race in general so maybe it should just be those two from now on.

If Hillary does get the nomination anyone think she would tap Sanders to be VP? Who else is out there that you could see her picking?

Not personally voting for Bernie even though I really respect him and he's extremely likable. His new yawk jewish sounding accent is great!

Agree also that O'malley is definitely cute in a way, but think Republican Paul Ryan is hotter.

Martin O'Malley also plays guitar. I think the only way he could have gotten any attention at that debate would have been to whip out his guitar and start singing!

I can't see her picking Bernie. He's too old, white and from the Northeast, just like her. it wouldn't be a balanced ticket. I see her picking a younger Hispanic guy from the South or West. I'm thinking Joaquin Castro, a congressman from Texas or his twin brother Julian who's the HUD secretary.

What I saw was authenticity from Bernie and Hillary and O'Malley. Bless those other two fools, their hearts are in the right place. You could almost sense these people holding themselves back from saying "Look, any of us is better than any of those clowns on the Republican side." Which is true. At one point Hillary said "we agree on the goals just not the means" but it was sort of drowned out.

When any of the other three made a point, they were lucky to get a smattering of applause. Hillary and Bernie were cheered at every turn. O'Malley finally got a strong reaction with his immigrant comments in his closing.

I think if you went in a Sanders or Clinton supporter, you came out the same way, and proudly. Not sure the debate swayed many.

Like many said the winner of the night was the democrat party in general because it CLEARLY showed the difference between the party of the escaped mental patients vs the party of relevance and real issues.

It literally shocks me that people are scared of Universal Health care. Healthcare and good education should be a basic right for everyone. If people can't afford it, they should not have to suffer and should still be looked after. What our taxes are there for and it is fair and just. Hate to think of someone not being treated or made to suffer just because they don't have the finances. Caring and just societies should never let that happen.

Indeed. Hillary does a wonderful job at sweet talking her way through a debate. I will give her credit for that. However, I really am puzzled how anyone can trust her. Bernie is strident and grumpy for a reason. He actually gives a damn. He's passionate about what he believes in. Hillary, on the other hand ...

Hillary Clinton, Democratic debate, October 13, 2015:

"I represented Wall Street...and I went to them in 2007 before the big crash and said, 'cut it out!'"

Such great leadership qualities ... for Wall St., that is.

Bernie is my #1 choice, but I am still on the page that if its Hillary its still a billion times better than any republican they will have running against her.

Plus if that rumor is true that she is looking to that Hispanic guy from Texas as a possible VP I think that would make a good ticket.

I like Biden also if he finally makes a choice.

As long as a dem wins, its all good in my book. That's the least I can hope for right now.
