*bored* Dr L's Madonna Memories association thread

OH KIM :wow:

1995. The tide, especially here in the UK, had started to turn. Indeed even in 1993 a 35 year old Madonna was already referred to as "GRANDMA". Then there was chart obsessed Dr L AGOG that his loving written "UK CHART POSITIONS BY MADONNA" was ruined by that Take a Bow reaching number 16. :( Then after Bedtime Stories, there was no tour...and then rumours of a new Greatest Hits..a ballad based one...and then i heard "You'll See", and fact fans, get this, i was with Mama Lecter who pronounced "That was beautiful" in her Ford Escort XR3i as we cruised along no doubt back from some pointless shopping excursion to Laura Ashley to buy curtains she didnt need..but i digress again...So Winter 1995, i was 18, in sixth form, and i saw the TOTP performance which was all very exciting and i noted she had a lovely shade of eye shadow and nice hair..BUT, and i do have a point, my MAIN memory of this gorgeous song was my first ever trip to the USA that year to meet famly i didnt really know...and this song was on the radio ALL THE TIME>..and EVERYONE loved it...i particularly recall getting the US Maxi Single from Tower Records(I think) in San Franscisco and all in all this song reminds me of my FIRST time out the country , and being in America that winter.and also the geek in me liked the fact the video was a TAi didnt get to take a fabled US Train journey so i could flicker a small lamp on on and off in dramatic fashion..however many a time ive sat on a park bench near autumnul leaves looking pensive..

WONDERFUL! Oh and this thread may well go on forever :wow:

it all seemed to me so low key..this amazing song, with those infamous misheard lyrics my sister would sing "you gave me back the pair of tights that i thought i lost for good" kind of just entered the top 10 and that was it, not even Top 3.

:chuckle:

Erotica

Oh WHERE do i BEGIN??

One of my favourite songs from MY FAVOURITE album by anyone ever anywhere...a just turned 15 year old Dr L had sort of come to terms with the fact that my life was destined to be that of a homosexual with a penchant for comedy nuance and a nice flower arrangement....and THIS was the album that was there for me...and the title song...well, its phenomenal....cruelly underrated and caught up in the whole Album/Book/Crap Film Trilogy, NO ONE has or will do what she did here...what other song is like this...from the sample of the monks or whatever, to the Jungle Boogie soundtrack, to the video (which was another thing passed around on an E60 VHS Cassette back in the classroom)...its just the total package of someone who at the top of their game pushed that envelope too far, and maybe she needed to, but as she said "That was worth a year of being beaten up" - she needed to implode in this slutty dominatrix shadow puppet fellatio giving exhibitionist, because for nearly 10 years thats what people said she was...so she does it and people cant handle it...that whole era to me is amazing...its dark, as a fan it was tense times as she was public enemy number one, written off, "MADONNA - SHES A GONNA" - and this amazing song encapsulates all of that...the "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh" to me are a highpoint....and also ordering SEX from that mail Order Company "WORLD BOOKS " that advertised on the back of Sunday Supplements, thank God for my Grandads empty house, where i took delivery illegally of a copy of SEX and then the other choices were Schindlers List and three Dictionaries....but still, it was FREE..

To me this was another low key song...i remember when it came out, Summer of 1992.. Madonna had been kinda away from the music scene for nearly 2 years...and at the time it was a song that was on the radio a lot in my mums shop, and i purchased it, but never really played it that much.....UNTIL.......i eventually got to see "A League of Their Own" later that year..then it all connected...a rare one of 5 films that can make me teary eyed....apart from that little shit Stilwell Angel and that prick who plays the older version doing the sad face..he needed a slap....(matched only by those two bitches barging into the Hall of Fame once the ribbon was cut, i mean WHO THE FUCK?)..i file this song under one that i dont play a lot, but its in my "I'M EMOTIONAL" playlist (along with plenty of other M ones)..but personally it was also one of the last films i watched with my Grandad before he had his stroke the next year..and that is what i associate it with..

GMAYL

Well like most people, it was the DEMO..and i actualy thought it was OK but obviously the finished version was going to be wildly different, kinda like "The Beat GoesON demo vs the albu version) however it turned out to not be...I dont mind this song at all, it shouldnt have been the lead single (maybe in America) but i loved the video and she looked hot....i go through phases with it, if it comes on random i will play it loud and sing along, but its not a go to song, but i dont get all suicidal and overemotional about it like some people..shes come back from worse

Who's That Girl

NOW we are talking...To this day a fave of mine....Summer 1987, my baby brother had just been born, and guess which song would have to be played to make him stop crying.yes WTG...and 26 years later he acknowledges it all and is a huge M Fan..and no hes #nohomo

My most vivid memory of it being at the local amusement park on a hot summers day and the DJ playing it over the loudspeakers seemingly every 10 minutes and EVERYONE singing along in the queues and that..and of course i have to mention the film...then and now its a personal favourite..ok its nothing brilliant , but to me its memories of watching it over ad over on VHS, repeating the lines, laughing at "WHATS HIS NAME?" - "LOUDON" - "LOUDON WHAT?" - "CLEAR"

Ahem

So yes , nearly 10 years old with my new little brother cherring up whenever he heard it...i thought he wouldnt remember you know, and last year at his wedding, when he did his speech (before i embarrassed him with mine) he mentioned to everyone about music and in particular Madonna and how he was brought up on it, and for him its his "baby song"

Ugh i sound schmaltzy

WTG really needs to be dusted off and done as a big sing-along-a album version on the next tour. One of those rare non IC tracks that everyone still remembers despite it being overlooked for so long.

How about "Vogue"?

Im not going to lie GAYS and GIRLS, but Spring 1990 this was THE song...my first glimpse of it was on some clipshow and it was a very brief shot of her with the long hair reflected on the mirror....then it was on the radio non stop - the 7" version (which i maintain is absolutely marvellous) - i remember being HIGHLY disappointed that the CD single didnt have an extended version, i had to wait for ages for OUR PRICE to get a US MAXI SINGLE IMPORT for the 12" version and noted BETTE DAVID DUB...Anyway...where was I - spring 1990, still in my first year at secondary school...and then i remember the video being released...It was a friday i think the night after Top of The Pops and a couple of girls were discussing it ( I assume i started the coversation) when out teacher launched into a massive rant about her "EXPOSED BREASTS" in her see through top - Pervert.

I never tire of this song, its in my Top 10 M songs forever. Who HASNT got drunk on a few VODKAS down the local PREMIER NITE SPOT and lost their shit to this, thinking they can do all the moves when in reality they probably look like a spasticated gibbon being jabbed with a cattle prod..In fact, going back to my ickle brothers wedding last year ,there is incriminating video footage somewhere of me and my sister singing the rap bit then thinking we were fabulous doing the "ooooh you got to just LET YOUR BODY MOVE TO THE MUSIC"

So yes,its euphoric....amazing, defining..say "VOGUE" to anyone, gay, straight, whatever i guarantee they will all do some facial hand movement dance.....Amaze

Best Thread Ever! MORE MORE MORE!!!

Borderline.

Well, here the FACTS - this is probably MY favourite Madonna song ever.....it was always up there but over the years it just astounds me what a briliant song this is. Hmm, so memories...well obviously it didnt do that well over here in the UK originally, but i was aware of it from "THE FIRST ALBUM" (ugh what a horrible title - proves how big she was tho, i think in 1984 EVERYONE got LAV and The First Album LP's)..I think it was the video that first captured my imagination - her look, the storyline, the green heels, kicking the lampost dejectedly, perving over Latino men down the local CHICOS POOL CLUB or whatever, and going up to the newsstand to see a copy of the noted GLOSS with THE FACE onn it - and dont get me started on the accidental over exciting graffitying of a pillar and a sports car...and then it was around January 1986 i think, it EXPLODED over here- she had dominated the charts in 85, releasing nearly everything, twice, and then before the new album we randomly got this....beautiful. The vocals, the lyrics, the "keep pushing me keep pushing me keep pushing my looooove come on babeeh come on darlin yeaaahh....dah dah dah dah dahdah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah" - its all about the original version, and it GRATES me its not on THE VIRGIN TOUR LIVE ON VHS and the Sticky and Sweet version sounded like she was having her throat scraped - then again i only saw S&S Part 2 so i missed this, but saw Dress You UP...but Still..

You will also find a lot of "REAL MUSIC" boffin type snobs love this song.....

Thinking about that intro now....gorgeous.

Like a Prayer

Pepsi advert i think, was the first time i heard anything of this. Thursday night im thinking. In America it was shown during The Cosby Show (EVERYONE watched that, even The Golden Girls didnt make plans on a thursday) - over here it was shown during an ad break in THE BILL. Says it all.

And that was all i heard of it. For a while. I remember liking her hair with the blonde streak and wishing she would tunr up to my school and come to the water fountain with me then mince down the hallways dancing....and then, it exploded on radio - jesus it was everywhere! I had just got m ELEVE PLUS results (exam taken in the UK to determine whether you go to a grammar school or not - i passed fact fans) so NOTED STAR OF THIS THREAD GRANDAD LECTER picked me up from school and took me to WOOLWORTHS to buy the 7" Single. And by GOD did i play the SHIT out it it on my AIWA HI FI with separate CD PLAYER ATTACHMENT....I also loved the fact the church in the video looked like our local Catholic Church (where i used to go, again with Grandad, tho i suspect he mainly went for the free refreshments and to steal candles "Handy in a power cut boyo!" he would say)...Anyways, so i mentioned i had a CD player ( I got it for Xmas, with 2 x CDS, "You Can Dance" and "Bad") but there was no CD single for this i dont think - but my cousin got me a 3" single, and i got the 12" single...and then the album..it is interesting in the NIKI thread everyone says about how the video caused offence in America and that - over here not really, i think Express Yourself caused more controversy. The video is , of course, GENIUS, the evil NAZI LOOKING HOT RAPIST looking at M scowling all smug, as M gives her best "OOOH YOU BAD MAN" scrunched up face and eyes...then going for a casual dance down the road in front of the burning crosses before finally going into the fake lookin jail set to just walk in and go unconvincinglly "HE DIDNT DO IT" so they release him - pfft, who needs lawyers, Madonna gets you off a rape charge by turning up in a slip dress showing a hint of bra.

Mama Lecter note - the bit where the choir mistress throws her back into the air - "Bloody lesley"

Bless

I accept this, totally...

:inlove:

Lecter, its my favorite song, too. i can never get enough of it. ever.

the bells in the beginning, the soul singing, the innocence and the attitude. the background vocalists!

in 1983, i had the cassette about 6 months before the video of Borderline came out on MTV in '84. my only visual was the Madonna/Madonna cover, the color outtake on the back cover of Billboard magazine and then came the video...

hook, line and sinker.

edit* oh and i know it was a typo when you said green pumps, when you really meant orange pumps!!!
