*bored* Dr L's Madonna Memories association thread

Dr Lecter

Recommended Posts

So basically I realised that nearly every Madonna song evokes a memory in some part of my life, or how I felt when I first heard it, what I was doing etc.

Now I very rarely start threads here and this may collapse faster than Britney Spears at an open bar, but give it a whirl.

Name a Madonna song and ill share some memories of it from my acclaimed 30 years as a fan.

Wow, this sounds interesting.

I'll go for "Justify My Love".

:inlove:

Ah yes. Winter of 1990. She was the ultimate megastar at that point. I think EVERYONE in my school loved her, the girls and the boys. First heard this on everyones 1990 Christmas gift, The Immaculate Collection, and of course I loved it. Then there was the furore of the video..that for ages i never got to see, only brief clips, mainly one of her running down the hallway giggling with her big suitcase. Do you guys have any idea how hard it was back then, no internet, no nothing....then my cousin got the video single from his friend in America - it was like having the latest hot porno. I recall borrowing it and then hiding it in case Mama Lecter discovered it and went off in one of her infamous rants about "that slagheap Madonna".

I also recall getting all the single versions and thinking it was dead naughty as i had taped the Orbit 12 " mix onto tape and everyone would gather round and listen.."Come on baby...*echo* you can fuck with me..." and then the ending..."FUCK ME".

This was also the time where she had the beesting collagen lips, and the leather clad cover was always a fave. I was gutted it was Christmas Number One here :(

DAMNED FILTH

True Blue

When most people my age get together, there is always a question asked (mostly by me) - "What was he first album you brought?" and 87.3% always say "True Blue" - indeed the amount of hot rugged straight men who own or owned this album is high.

The song ? Well, It was 1986. A just turned 9 year old Dr Lecter's first album WASNT "True Blue" - but i remember getting the album on vinyl and playing it to death..indeed, the title song was always a fave, mainly for the intro "HEY...WHAT?" which (instigated by me) became a playground calling ...I also recall i first thought she sand "Just think of Gary Malvedere" - yes, not "Just think back and remember dear - who was this Gary Malvedere character? I was convinced for about 6 days it was a song about this man, probably her first love..Anyway as i threatened, i ramble on. For a song she never performs or mentions, to the general public i would say this is one of her most remembered.Speaking of the album i recall my cousin (same one) had the cassette album, and i was jealous as you saw more of her on the cover and more side boob.

YOU'LL SEE :dramatic:

OH KIM :wow:

1995. The tide, especially here in the UK, had started to turn. Indeed even in 1993 a 35 year old Madonna was already referred to as "GRANDMA". Then there was chart obsessed Dr L AGOG that his loving written "UK CHART POSITIONS BY MADONNA" was ruined by that Take a Bow reaching number 16.:( Then after Bedtime Stories, there was no tour...and then rumours of a new Greatest Hits..a ballad based one...and then i heard "You'll See", and fact fans, get this, i was with Mama Lecter who pronounced "That was beautiful" in her Ford Escort XR3i as we cruised along no doubt back from some pointless shopping excursion to Laura Ashley to buy curtains she didnt need..but i digress again...So Winter 1995, i was 18, in sixth form, and i saw the TOTP performance which was all very exciting and i noted she had a lovely shade of eye shadow and nice hair..BUT, and i do have a point, my MAIN memory of this gorgeous song was my first ever trip to the USA that year to meet famly i didnt really know...and this song was on the radio ALL THE TIME>..and EVERYONE loved it...i particularly recall getting the US Maxi Single from Tower Records(I think) in San Franscisco and all in all this song reminds me of my FIRST time out the country , and being in America that winter.and also the geek in me liked the fact the video was a TAi didnt get to take a fabled US Train journey so i could flicker a small lamp on on and off in dramatic fashion..however many a time ive sat on a park bench near autumnul leaves looking pensive..

this is amazing

Frozen?

OOH some of you RAY OF LIGHTERS wont like this but i remember EXACTLY where i was when i heard this. I was back home from uni, i think it was Feb 1997, and i was about half an hour from home on a saturday afternoon..and on Radio 1, noted DJ and Ibiza Travel Guide Lisa I'Anson said "And next the new Madonna single" - and i heard it...and..was underwhelmed. i pulled up the driveway at Chez Lecter to be greeted by the infamous Mama Lecter, cigarette in hand, sunglasses on her head (all seasons darling) probably on her 4th glass of wine that hour, and i was deflated...what a tool..but i needed to listen again. Obviously then there was no itunes, i just had my COOL HI FI CD PLAYER and tape deck...so i waited..and then it was announced it was the next song on again, so i was poised, fingers simultaneously on PLAY and RECORD, and i HIT THOSE BAD BOYS...and i then ust have listened to it over and over again...and it hit me..this was amazing....and i regretted ruining my last half hour driving home feeling down..what a loser...Other memories - The National Lottery performance (then the biggest show on TV)...buying the single on all formats and strutting through London with the CASSINGLES on auto reverse repeat along with SHANTI....going out the night before and getting my tongue pierced and then on the sunday listening to the charts and hearing those words i hadnt heard for over 7 years.."AND THE UK's NUMBER ONE SINGLE IS MADONNA"

Yes

Secret!

"Secret" to me just came out of nowhere...by then we had MTV and the fabulous MTV EUROPE with such amazing DJ's as Carolyn Lilipally and that Swedish bird who fluffed all her lines....and then i saw the video first....it all seemed to me so low key..this amazing song, with those infamous misheard lyrics my sister would sing "you gave me back the pair of tights that i thought i lost for good" kind of just entered the top 10 and that was it, not even Top 3....BUT then it did go Top 3 in America, so, as many may have heard, i peeled a sticker off another CD Single in Woolworths that said "REMIX US TOP 3 SINGLE" and it remains there to this day..I was also obsessed with the "Juniors Luscious Single Mix"...

American Pie?

Oh now here we get into a good memory era...year 2000, i finished uni, was enjoying my job, and i remember hearing this for the first time and i kind of liked it...but it grew on me as time went on, mainly for the fact that this was the time she was everywhere again on top of the world, number one here , i went to the Premiere of TNBT and sat / stood about 3 feet away from this small pregnant woman on the stage...and even tho its not a fan fave, for me the memories are hearing this so loud in the Leicester Square Odeon, me and my best friend from school drunkenly reuniting and singing along to this in a pub, and then i went to Australia where, like Youll See in the States, this was on the radio non stop..so for me more of a personal memory song of some of the happiest times of my life, particularly driving down the Bruce Highway at 3 o'clock in the morning possibly a little high , with this blaring out of a crappy yellow car while 4 English lads sang along..and to this day, my closest mates, this is OUR SONG..and before you ask,Im the only gay one in that group

Music

I first heard the demo way back when it leaked - was that when she did the "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING" thing on the downloads or was that something else...anyway the hype was building that summer, i guess it was kind of odd, she released this just around the time she had Rocco..and then i was convinced it was going to stall at Number 2, especially as on CD;UK on heir Saturday Chart thats where they placed it...But anyone who knows me knows im a fan of bare bones bleepy noise music, and this song has it in spades...from the opening gay hairdresser vocal intro of "hey mr DJ" to those minimal beats, and the joy of hearing it being played in nightclubs and bars while suddenly girls were all wearing cowboy hats and i was mincing along in my flared jeans with glued on studs....For me my favourite part of the song is the last minute or so, its so euphoric and dancey...It remains one of my all time favourite songs by her, and again, memory wise, was probably the best year of my life, i fucking loved 2000, being a carefree 22/23 year old, working during the week to blow my cash on crap clothes, cigarettes and vodka to dance the night away...ahhh

It's amazing how you can remember all of this, I can't remember where I was or how I felt about some of those songs at the time. I do however know that Madonna was definitely saying "Wft do you think you are doing" throughout the American Life (album leak). I think I was a member of Madonnamad back then when Rob was the owner. Fun times.
