Centurions' helmets and cheerleaders' leotards: Behind-the-scenes look at Madonna's Super Bowl dressing room

Madonna well and truly stole the show at last night's XLVI Super Bowl - the Giants' Eli Manning may be the man of the match but the queen of pop made the evening her own.

Now, behind-the-scenes photos show the levels of organisation that went into the moments-long performance of Vogue, Like a Prayer and Music as well as new song, Give Me All Your Luvin.

The 53-year-old's epic performance did not appear from ancient Egyptian and Roman ages without an extraordinary amount of regimented planning and mammoth levels of production.

Gladiator style: A candid shot from behind-the-scenes at Madonna's Super Bowl show sees her scantily-clad Roman centurions flexing their muscles

Roman legions and an army of dancers materialised in figure-hugging, flesh-baring outfits, all meticulously made-to-fit and perfectly coordinated. From jug-carrying maidens to harp-proffering, gyrating hip-hop dancers, every look was contrived to the last detail.

In photos taken by Madonna's team and provided by her fashion label, Material Girl, outfits are seen, carefully name-tagged and hanging in dressing rooms at the Lucas Oil Stadium before the show.

Tony's helmet: Leopard-print detailing in check, one dancer's helmet sits ready to whip into action for the Material Girl's game-changing performance

A centurion's helmet, complete with faux leopard fur, sits on a stand, ready to transform a dancer by the name of Tony into a Roman guard, protecting pop royalty.

Lines of tiny red and white leotards, embellished with sparkling finishing, glitzy epaulettes and yards of tassels sit alongside a pair of white boots, ready to swing into action for the Give Me All Your Luvin segment.

Another rack sees four custom Adidas sweatsuits, the trademark three-striped logo transformed into a musical score complete with semi-quavers and crotchets.

Golden boys: The eye-catching breastplates, embellished shoulder pieces and strappy sandals for the support dancers and extras

Pom poms! Madonna's cheerleaders' outfits hang, waiting for their turn on the world stage, every detail from the sparkling finishes to the tassels immaculately planned

The name tags attached to the showy clothes reveal they are for dancers Adrien, Brahim, Lilou and Maxime - who accompanied the singer in the Music segment of the spectacle.

The section gave the pop queen a chance to dance alongside her boyfriend, Brahim Zaibat, who is less than half her age at 24-years-old.

Semi-quaver: One outfit sports Brahim's name-tag - Madonna's boyfriend danced alongside her during the Music segment on bleachers

Not to be upstaged by the wild and wonderful costumes of Nicki Minaj, MIA, LMFAO and Cee Lo Green, Madonna's Givenchy couture costumes, masterminded by Riccardo Tisci, saw three changes for the Material Girl.

A liquid-gold robe revealed a Roman-esque black silk mini dress, worn with a leopard print short cape.

Her black python belt was hand-studded and hand-embroidered and had removable matching flaps - on show until a final black cape shimmered in dark majesty.

In action: The Material Girl grooves with her 'cheerleader' backing dancers in their minimal red and white leotards, tassels swinging

The singer's stunning, geometric head-dress was made by Philip Treacy, while WWD reports that her diamond earrings were by Bulgari.

The salute to high fashion did not end there - at one point, the stage transformed into a Vogue magazine cover, its iconic banner cementing the runway acumen of the star-studded performance.

...THE SHOWMANSHIP CONTINUES: ENTER THE $1MILLION HEADPHONES

Audio bling: You know you're a rap star when you wear a $1million pair of diamond-encrusted headphones

Even the props on stage were a monument to over-the-top flashiness and showmanship.

LMFAO's Sky Blu may have had one of the most bombastic outfits on stage, but he dazzled in more ways than one.

The rapper and Party Rock star sported the world's first pair of $1million headphones.

Encrusted with an excess of 114 carats of diamonds, the bling audio hardware - worn firmly around the star's neck - were made by world-famous jewellers, Graff and high-end audio brand, Beats by Dr Dre.

The duo, in true trademark eccentricity, mismatched animal prints with diamante, Roman-style panelled belts, hi-top trainers, capes, heavy bejeweled glasses and voluminous hair for their few minutes on the world-famous stage.

Do you think NFL will go back to back FEMALE headliners?

well, now that Madonna had much success they probably would go for another chick...Beyonce is the only one I could think of...not sure about her appeal though, what's she gonna sing? Single Ladies and Crazy in love are fine, but what else? Baby boy? , Naughty Girl? Irreplaceble and Halo are too slow for a show like that...and Mariah?, she'd do some kind of Diana Ross shyt but with less classic hits...Celine and Whitney?...too many ballads...Gaga for sure will try with all her claws...we'll see, but whoever it is Madonna's show will be THE show to beat and will be the one who set the bar very high :clap:

Beyoncé will be for sure a good one halftime show. Single Ladies, Crazy in Love, Run the World, her Destiny's child medley and a new song. Perfecto :wow:

Nobody cares about her flop run the world... It was a massive flop. Anyway she's busy playing with her fake baby.

I might consider join them if she does.

You can't join, and they wouldn't have you. They are (reportedly) the same people who introduced AIDS into the world after all. Your role is to live a short, insignicant life where you are obsessed with your immediate physical wants and needs, don't question authority, and don't seek spiritual truth. Pop music's role is to encourage you in this aim. Enjoy. :)

This is a great achievement by Madonna, but for some reason I think this record will easily be broken. I mean last year 110 million people watched the BEP (and apparently their performance wasn't so well received) and now Madge brings in another 4 million viewers. That's not too much, imo. Plus these half time shows seem to have a viewership that grows with each year.

Oh for fuck's sake who cares about when it will be broken. Let's enjoy this moment right here and now.

Parents group slams M.I.A.'s Super Bowl flip off: 'The NFL lied'

by James Hibberd

The Parents Television Council is tackling Sundays Super Bowl controversy. British singer M.I.A. flipped off viewers during Madonnas halftime show, a gesture that instantly drew comparisons to Janet Jacksons live wardrobe malfunction in 2004. The PTC says the NFL promised the organization a clean show despite casting performers with provocative reputations.

NBC fumbled and the NFL lied because a performer known as M.I.A. felt it necessary to flip off millions of families, wrote PTC president Tim Winter. It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer. Last week the NFL formally told the PTC and the American public that the Super Bowl halftime show would be appropriate. Most families would agree that the middle finger aimed directly at them is not appropriate, especially during the most-watched television event of the year.

According to an NBC spokesperson, the monitoring system tried to blur M.I.As gesture, but was too late by a fraction of a second (photo and video here). The NFL, however, hired the talent and produced the show.

The mechanism NBC had in place to catch this type of material completely failed, and the network cannot say it was caught off guard, Winter continued. It has been eight years since the Janet Jackson striptease, and both NBC and the NFL knew full well what might happen. They chose a lineup full of performers who have based their careers on shock, profanity, and titillation. Instead of preventing indecent material, they enabled it. M.I.A. used a middle finger shamelessly to bring controversial attention to herself, while effectively telling an audience filled with children, eff-you.

Both NBC and the NFL have issued statements of apology to viewers. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans, wrote the NFL. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers, wrote NBC. But the PTC says its not enough.

A simple apology rings hollow after yet another slap in the face to families, especially when NBC has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that it should be allowed to air all manner of indecent material at any time of day, even when children are watching, Winter said. Either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans, or they will feebly sit back and do nothing. The nation and the PTC is watching.

Janet Jacksons Super Bowl exposure was a landmark event for the PTC, which was at the forefront of citizen-based criticism of the telecast.
